Great vid and thanks for the info! Actually learned some new things about DA:I. Sadly youtube does not allow me to post a comment (although I am logged in), so I'll just say it here.
It's that bloody Google+ comments thing, it's a pain in the arse. I'm glad you like it though, I wasn't sure if the warrior inquisitor skits were funny or not.

Like that one article said, try not to worry too much about a too interesting or too perfect character. The Warden, Hawke, and even the Inquisitor all have something about them that makes them stand out from the rest. Heck, putting yourself in the story can help you understand a few things.
Take Harry, for example. If he wasn't The-Boy-Who-Lived and the only one who could defeat Voldemort, then we wouldn't have a very interesting story. If we read it all from Neville's perspective, no matter how awesome he turns out to be, it wouldn't have been as engaging. Harry being a bit more special is what made us keep reading.
Same goes for Batman. He's horrible to his friends, and yet people still like him. He is a master in almost every form of combat, and always wins. But people don't say he's a Sue - they say he's a hero.
So, go ahead and give the Inquisitor an interesting ability or a past that makes them stand out. If they didn't stand out one way or the other, then we wouldn't have an upcoming game.
That's very true, and I've certainly written my share of original stories (with hopefully interesting original characters lol!) but I just know that it can be a huge turn off for fanfic readers to encounter a Mary Sue type character. I know I don't like to read them. Even for DA2 fanfics, if someone writes Hawke in a way that doesn't remind me of any of the three personality types, I'm like, MARY SUE/GARY STU!!! BLERGH!!! lol
Totally OT now, but regarding HP, I really dislike Harry as a main character. He's soooo bland. I kind of wish Neville had been the hero, or heck, Hermione! Or Ron. They're so much more interesting than Harry. She kind of poured all her creativity into the side characters and then Harry was left as this blank slate, sigh.
I'm afraid I don't know anything about Batman although I have seen all the movies (except the first two with Michael Keaton). Though I have to say that seeing Batman played by three different actors (that I've seen) and not noticing any real difference between them makes me think the character himself is not very interesting. But I think super hero characters are sort of purposefully generic.
Well, I'm at work; have to wait to watch Lola's video at home

LOL, I loved the bit about Cullen. That would totally be my exact reaction if he's ever confirmed as a companion. Followed by a lot of squeeing and fangirl tears of joy.
Anyways, I probably shouldn't have watched this during one of my study periods because I laughed so loud everyone started staring at me. It was Hawkeward.

Yeah, I could certainly see that happening, unfortunately. I just don't think Cullen would be the one responsible, since his own suggestion of the best course of action to follow with them takes the premise that they won't be Tranquil.LolaLei wrote...
Those are might thoughts too, although David Gaider said that they would be made tranquil later anyway. However, he never said that it would be Cullen that makes them tranquil, so I think that goes some way to explaining something, lol.
I also can't help being skeptical when people suggest that Cullen was aware that templars like Alrik and Karras were sexually abusing their charges and he looked the other way. That just doesn't make sense to me given Cullen's established motives. Even if you take the assumption that he wouldn't care about the harm being done (which also doesn't fit his character as I see it, but just for the sake of argument...) I can't see him being okay with his men getting in vulnerable/close/compromising positions with mages at that point in his character arc. He'd have every practical reason to put a stop to it even without any empathy involved. So I would guess that the templars in question were hiding it from him, and it's not like the mages are going to go running to the Knight-Captain with their problems so he wouldn't find out that way either.
@ the "yoga" pic and being Hawkeward, thanks for the double dose of laughter!

I also laughed at the Cullen bit; that will be my reaction, too... I can just see me being like, blah blah blah, plot plot, hmm I wonder what color I should paint my new castle walls *ignoring what random soldier guy is saying until he says the name CULLEN* Who-What?!?! WHERE?
Confession, I am one of those who was worried by the Inquisitor's voice; here's hoping it's a stand-in? Also, your video made me realize that none of those dialogue options had personality options; I hope the Inquistor hasn't lost his/her personality? Even the Warden apparently had personality dialogue options.

If I understand the way DG has explained it, big quest choices like that are 'neutral' as they were intended in many (all?) cases in DA2. So, like when you're choosing a course of action, it lists only the different actions, not additional ways to say each, if that makes sense. But I also didn't get the impression that the tones are going away, only that you would no longer develop an 'average" tone that is applied to situations where you aren't choosing what you say (I guess some players call this autodialog, but DG seemed to take exception to this term). I don't believe we saw any examples in the demo, tho, did we?motomotogirl wrote...

I think this may somewhat depend on the luck of the draw on your playthrough. I never got the dialog about Alrik at the Gallows when I was actually playing; I only read about it later. It's possible I just missed it, but I use subtitles for all dialog (including ambient) and stop when I hear NPC conversations so I can eavesdrop because I'm apparently really nosy, so I'm fairly sure that encounter didn't fire for me.Xilizhra wrote...
And from what we hear in the Gallows, there was barely any attempt to keep it secret; certainly there'd be enough to make people suspicious.
When there were rumors of extreme badness going on in the Circle in Acts Two and Three, my Hawke went to the Gallows a couple of times to try to talk to the mages to get a firsthand account, and for the most part they were just saying that their life stank and templars stank in a very generic way without specifics. The only specific complaint I was able to wring out of them after clicking on multiple mages multiple times was Grace saying their staves and grimoires had been taken, and I remember being a little surprised they had those to start with.
Bear in mind I was actively trying to get some dirt because my Hawke was worried, and it just wasn't working.
The first time any mage even addressed the sexual abuse issue to my Hawke was Alain in Best Served Cold, and that was one of the last quests I did in the game. And my Hawke was a fellow mage.
Randomized dialog is random, I guess.
As long as I can make my Inquisitor sarcastic, I'm on board.R2s Muse wrote...

Er... how? It might help if you try to bump into the wandering mages, as there are several Tranquil who reference Ser Alrik, and you don't have to look hard to find them. It's not totally random.Bear in mind I was actively trying to get some dirt because my Hawke was worried, and it just wasn't working.

That's why I'm so concerned; because soooo many "fans" beotched and moaned and complained about "autodialogue" (and each person defined that in his/her own way) that I'm worried they're going to remove the PC's personality entirely. The demo video increased that fear, and the revelation that there will no longer be an "average" tone also increased it.
But... I'm not one who immediately opened a hate thread in DAI forums or sent angry tweets/tumblrs to devs screaming and demanding to the know the truth lol I'm just... worried. That's all.
And I'll be disappointed, I KNOW I'll be disappointed, when I play DA:I because some of the stuff I loved in DA2 is probably going to disappear, just b/c so many people complained about that game (which I happened to love).
But that's a good point about the neutral choices... still, it's yet another example of removing personality from the PC

To be honest, I think this is just a weakness of the game. I agree that it seems rather obvious, to the PC, that reallllly bad stuff was going down with all the ambient dialogue ("I am Ser Alrik's now." or Karras threatening Alain with tranquility if he said he'd been in his room). It's hard to tell how clued in Cullen may have been however. On one hand, you confront him about Alrik's Tranquil Solution and he knows all about it, although arguably that was a higher level management issue. On the other hand, it is hard to reconcile him being willfully ignorant of Alrik's abuses, although you can conceive of reasons it might have been hidden from a higher ranking templar (particularly one who is Fereldan and was precipitously promoted over other Kirkwallers). This is something I hope they can address in the future.Xilizhra wrote...
