Yeah, I just couldn't get past the changes in characterization. Simon Tam, master of disguise. Mal Reynolds, kinda a dick. Gah. Can't go there again. Too painful. And, 14 episodes feels pretty short of a full season to me (which should be about 22). Buffy season 1 was a midseason replacement, which is why it was short. The others were 22. Dunno why Dollhouse was short.Elfman wrote...
I loved Serenity. The only thing I didn't like about it necessarily was that Mal sort of regressed as a character, but for a movie, you sort of need that little bit of growth. And 14 episodes is a whole season! (Unfortunately) But the first season of Dollhouse was only 14 episodes I think, and Buffy was more or less the same.

I could never hate Serenity, but that's just because of Kaylee's hilarious "I'm gonna live!" line. And I never knew that about Buffy, I thought it was just like pitch for the Buffyverse which is why it had those Monster Of The Week episodes and the stereotypical Master, (who I still just want to hug because he's so funny. My friends think he's rubbish, but how can you hate that adorable face?!).
Then again I'm English so I don't understand all that American TV weirdness. Like the story of how Angel got cancelled just baffled me.

Oh neither could I! I like it. I just don't love it like I'd hoped I would. Like the tiny Browncoat inside me *should have*. But it has its moments, for sure, and some fun quotables. Just too many other moments I try to pretend didn't happen. *sniff*sniff* Kinda like I pretend that the Alien series ended at 2.Elfman wrote...

There was definitely some out of character stuff in Serenity, and I also felt like Shepherd Book (who was so cool and interesting) was shortchanged by being in such a minor role.

Amazingly written characters, well-done world building, an atmosphere that was serious when it needed to be but rather humorous otherwise, fighting existing for the sake of the plot and not to look awesome.... Getting to follow a rag tag group trying to get by and exploring this fantastic world without a care beyond their moral values and putting food on the table (which is an interesting enough conflict, really).
Frankly I wish I could unsee Serenity. When Firefly ended, they could have sold me anything with the brand on it. But before I went out to buy the comics, I decided to watch Serenity. I wasn't entertained for a single minute I think, just sat there feeling betrayed. The characters were commonly acting completely out of character, the tone went dark and gritty, Hollywood action scenes and a pretty epic plot line following a TV show whose plot I loved for how down to Earth it felt.
I dunno, I have zero interest in picking up the comics now cause I know Serenity is canon to them. Are they any good?

I've only read one of the comics so far, the first one, and I thought it was good. It felt more like real Firefly to me, so it was kinda like just watching another episode. But it was a bit bitter sweet knowing that Serenity's events still lay in its future.

Oh! You remember when we were all speculating about whether or not the voices used for the male human Inquisitor and Vivienne were just stand ins for the demo? Well, I was just listening to the Nerd Appropriate recorded podcast for the "Behind the Scenes at DAI" panel and Mike Laidlaw says that the VOs are the actual voice actors used for each character, so Vivienne definitely sounds not Orlesian (or at least has a very subtle Orlesian accent that we didn't pick up on in the demo) and the male human Inquisitor definitely sounds like, well, male Hawke, lol.
Ah, good to know! I wonder where Vivienne's from, then. She easily could just have been, erm, stationed at the Circle in the Orlais. And, m!Inquisitor, weeelll, I thought his voice was just fine. Heck they could use the same VA as m!Hawke, and I'd be fine. Now I'm curious about f!Inquisitor.
BTW, did they say anything definitive about the different race voices? I thought the last thing I heard was they weren't sure if they would vary by race, but I can't remember now.

And I definitely want individual VAs, but I suppose of all depends on how different they want to make each race's experience. It'd be a waste of money to have so many people just say the same thing with the odd throwaway line here and there.

It's still up in the air, last time I heard. There's really only three possibilities of what's going on that I can come up with.
1) All races will share voices and this has already been decided, but they prefer to speak in uncertainties
2) All races will have their own respective voices and this has already been decided, but they prefer to be able to use this reveal in marketing later
3) It's definitely still on the table of discussion
If 1 is true, that means they're not being completely sincere. I really hope that isn't true =)
If 2 is true, that means they're not being completely sincere just to be able to get a better marketing boom going on later. I'm game with that. They probably knew they'd include Qunari already when they announced elven and dwarven PCs for instance, but knew reactions would be better if they made it two separate announcements. That's simply good business practice =)
If 3 is true, that would seem to imply to me that something other than the voicing budget may be in the way. After all, if voicing didn't have the budget for 8 voices and they were indeed sincere with us, we'd know. That's 4 times Hawke's voice budget, so whether the cost itself is a problem should be apparent right away.
If what's keeping it from being a sure thing isn't the voice budget, it ought to be another budget. QA to check all scenes with every race and gender variant to ensure the wrong audio file is never being played? Maybe, but they're likely to do that kind of testing any way just to ensure all the cinematics fire properly, methinks. Localisation? I dunno, wouldn't that be kinda obvious at a glance just like the normal voicing budget?
Assuming the voice budget isn't a problem, but another budget is, and taking in the most-likely-a-fact that the PC is the single entity with the most lines by quite a margin, methinks the most likely budget to be hit is storage space. As in, you know, megabytes. Having 8 voices instead of 2 for the character that speaks the most will eat a ton of storage space. The PS3, PS4 and Xbox One use Bluray and can thus allow 50gb of data. PC is a separate beast since it can come with multiple DVDs to be installed to the harddrive before running the game, and/or use Origin to send all the data over the internet any way.
But the Xbox 360 presents a unique issue with its hard 9gb limit on the dual-layer DVD format (9gb). Swtor takes up roughly 18gb I think, with the biggest chunk of that size being voice over - the player character voices taking up the majority of said chunk. DAI will absolutely not have as high of a word count as swtor does, but this would still be a legitimate issue, I think.
I can come up with a few ways of solving the issue. The first would be to simply cut the 360 version's content and require it to share voices in-between the races. This is doable, but kinda mucks up BioWare's intention of keeping the game function the same on all platforms (not to mention adds even more QA work).
Another solution would be to put DAI on multiple discs and make their installation mandatory. Very, very few games on the platform has done that to this day (since there are 360s out there that don't even have a harddrive but save game patches and player saves on small memory cards, these consoles would be incapable of even playing the game) - in other words I don't think that's a likely thing to do.
Yet another way of getting around the 9gb problem would be to cut the game up in portions on separate discs like ME2 did. The PS3 and PC versions of ME2 surely got the raw end of the stick since they couldn't recruit, say, Thane right away only because Thane's missions were on the second disc and the game was designed so that you would not swap discs until after Horizon. That way nobody could ever bring Thane to disc 1 missions and quite a deal of planned (and even finished) content got locked out on all platforms. There's tons of videos on Youtube where people have added late-game characters into their parties to see these scenes hidden from the player due to BioWare's solution to the 360's storage limit. I don't think this is gonna happen again.
Finally, the way I would go if I were BioWare. And it's gonna bug the crap out of everyone who plays the game on 360. That would be to tie every area in the game to a specific disc, so that every time you go to a certain place you will need to insert the proper disc. ME3 was essentially designed this way (only they were nice enough to keep the Citadel on both discs), and it's the only way of ensuring the 360 gets all its content without changing the flow of the game itself on all platforms just to pander to the 360's storage space problems. This would definitely lead to a ton of disc swapping for 360 players though, and it costs BioWare a bit extra since printing several discs is expensive. But I think that's the way to go.
Since BioWare may not have decided how they're solving the 360 DVD problem, the voice-per-race decision may still be hinging on that. And wow, you actually read all of this sperge-fest? I owe you a beer. Choose your brand ^^

"Yes, you will be able to play as a Dalish mage. We are also currently exploring the concept that maybe a mage protagonist is different enough that they also need a particular background track that might serve them better than just "human" etc, so we're looking into how much more different that needs to be, especially given the nature of the giant freakin' hole in the sky and stuff that may have led to that."
What does that even mean? From what I can work out it sounds like a mage character would be more than your average circle or apostate mage, especially considering Mark Darrah hinted a while back that we might even be directly involved in how the veil got torn open in the first place (presumably either through choice, or unwittingly).

From what I gathered, it just meant that the mage class might have a different background to the warriors and rogues because the context of the Mage-Templar War puts greater emphasis on being a mage. Not that we ourselves would have played any more of a part to play in the Veil opening if we had played as a warrior or rogue. Sort of undermines those classes.

Question to Matt Rhodes:
First of all I love all this concept art. As someone who does a lot of speculating this stuff always gets me excited. So I've been wondering something about the Inquisitor. Is it just me or is the Inquisitor portrayed as a rogue a lot?
Matt Rhodes:
Thanks! You’re right, there’s an abundance of rogues and that’s not an accident. There are two reasons. The first is that the iconic Warden was a warrior and the Iconic Hawke was a mage, so we wanted to try pushing rogues this time. In fact we built the rogue version first. The second is simple, shameless favoritism. I always role rogue. Always. It’s my class. Unless there is a specific reason to do otherwise, I’ll make the Inquisitor a rogue every time.
