For the PnP game I already have my character designed. He is a glorious magister and scion of his family.

I'm in GMT+1 too (Netherlands)
I'm only free on the weekends, though. Busy, busy.
I am GMT-6 (Chicago/New Orleans time). Perrhaps we may have an Americas group and a Europe group? I don't think we have any Asian/Aussie Cullenites...?
I will start a list and add to it as people add their timezones/availability, and we'll go from there:

Sure. I mean, as long as it's cool with everyone else... But one day I hope we can ALL get together and play it. Y'know "CULLENITES UNITED" and all that.motomotogirl wrote...

TBA, me, too, and who knows, it might work out like that 8D Can you pick up an RPG session with some people missing? If so, then we could just have say semi-regular meetings, and those who can meet, meet. Those who can't, maybe can next time. And so on.
The box set is 40 dollars on amazon (thanks Kidd!); I'll get it once we all decide how and what we're doing 8D I downloaded the character sheet but it makes no sense to me. I'm sure the box will explain everything.

Larger groups can get unwieldy, but depending on group atmosphere and what the group is comfortable with it's not impossible to run groups in the size of 7 players + 1 game master. It all has to do with group chemistry and what people are into the game for.Commander Kurt wrote...
I've always wanted to try pen and paper, never knew anyone who was into it. Is there a maximum number of players that can join?
Kidd, you're Stockholm-based right?
For instance, the bigger the group, the less actual gaming tends to be done (turns take longer time, each player gets less spotlight, focus is lost easily, off-topic laughs are had). If the game is mostly a social event and a game second, that can even be preferable to some even though the game progresses slowly, etc.
Realistically, I don't think we have anything to worry about a group becoming too large. That's only ever happened to me once in my life.
And yes, I'm Stockholm-based =) Why?
There's several solutions to having irregular casts. Generally they fall into two camps:motomotogirl wrote...

- Stay away from campaigns
By aiming to have every evening be a single, stand-alone adventure, it's easy for characters to come and go organically. This is not only useful to make it easy for people to jump in and out, but it's also the way that requires less handwaving when somebody wants to retire a character to try a new one. Of course, this also often leads to a lack of sense of purpose and context since there can be no larger story arcs. In turn that also means there's no need to ever fill a returning player in on what happened last time.
- Just handwave it
This way a larger campaign with an evolving story can exist. When players cannot join a game, their characters simply "phase out" for a while, either with an explanation in-world or they just tag along while the other players pretty much act like they aren't there (even though plot-wise, they are). This leads to a little bit of "last time on Dragon Age" being required for returning players, and said players may wish they could have reacted to certain events when they are relayed back to them. Ultimately though, it has the benefit of having a plot with all the choice & consequence that can bring.
There's thousands of variations for exact solutions, but those two are the main ways of doing it =)
The sheet is simply two neat pieces of paper with boxes on them that help you keep all the numbers and lists organised. That's where you put the numbers that show how strong and smart your character is, list their talents and write down any new loot they find. You can't fill it out with anything (save, I guess, everything in the upper left corner (minus Background, which has rules to it) which is purely fluff and has nothing to do with rules) until you start the character generation process.motomotogirl wrote...

The book will tell you what to do. It's not rocket science =) You're essentially just looking at an empty Character screen at the moment.
Good initiative (your character moves first)! =)motomotogirl wrote...

Pennsylvania.
If we just make it so that instead of long drawn out campaigns our characters just have one off missions it would be easy to play a game end it and then start a new one with whoever is there at the time.

If you're in Pennsylvania, I think you're a GMT-5. I fairly sure, but someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
GMT-4 would be parts of eastern Canada and maybe tiny parts of Maine.
GMT-6 would sort of be from Alabama to the westernmost part of Texas.

I would be up for waiting till after the holidays if that works better for people. I haven't even started Christmas shopping yet (waiting for my holiday pay for Thanksgiving to come through) so it's going to be a busy couple of weeks for me too.

C'mon, BW. Serve up sum savory, savory for the ladies.

I'm +1 as well, but maybe it's less about the timezone and more about the schedule? If the Americans meet up during weekends and the Europeans meet up during weeknights I would probably do better with the Americans. So, perhaps throw a few suggestions out there and we'll make groups after that? For instance, sundays I could probably join almost any time of day or night.
As for how we handle people being absent, all the ideas Kidd mentioned sounded fun to me. I don't care too much if we do this hardcore with small, focused groups or more casual with a big, slow group. It just sounds like great fun either way.

I'm almost certain we'll get something for christmas, the dev's love us don't they? I'm almost equally certain it will amount to a screenshot or concept art. No info, just a little present.

I guess weekends are usually the easiest for playing, and then the evenings (less issues with work schedules). But yeah, I'm not there each and every weekend (somehow pretend to have a social life and such
The only thing we might have to be careful with is that won't be a huge experience gap between those that tag along more often than others, unless we make the game in such a way that it won't matter. (for example: I play a WoW-based PnP with some friends, but some are level 14 for being there for ages, whilst I am only level 5: however, this does not hinder the gameplay at all, as the monsters are scaled to the lowest level. There are just a ****load of them to keep the higher levels busy XD)

I swear, if Cullen is romanceable by the inquisitor in DAI, it'll feel weird to scroll back to the past (our present) in this thread =D
I can't imagine those encounters run very interestingly. Either you'll feel overrun and like you're just taking down a few beasts in the greater horde while the others plow through them, or they'll be bored as hell (most likely the truth would be somewhere in between the two). Your game master is a freaking genius if they manage to craft encounters that are satisfying to all of you.Mahumia wrote...

I guess weekends are usually the easiest for playing, and then the evenings (less issues with work schedules). But yeah, I'm not there each and every weekend (somehow pretend to have a social life and such), so I like Kidds options for dealing with characters that are not there.

Then again, I have no experience with the WoW PnP. But considering it's a major game title's PnP edition I highly doubt it has lots of unorthodox solutions to things (similar to how the DA RPG isn't the most innovative system by any means even though it has its fun quirks).
I'm working on a game system myself where characters rarely grow in depth but rather in breadth to allow newcomers to create truly new characters while coexisting with more experienced characters, but to me that's indeed a design that needs to be within the core rules. If I was allowing newcomers into a game of D&D or something, I'd just give them enough XP to start out where the others are. So what if the character hasn't went through all those adventures in actual play time? The player's fun trumps all =)

Yeah, I'm sorry if I sounded like I wanted to tell you that you're not having fun. Hearing about the situation just made me go full game designer. Never go full game designer =DMahumia wrote...
I think more roleplay and less fighting helps a lot (that is also what we do at the WoW PnP btw) But I like the idea of character growth by other means than pure level. Actually, I think a DA PnP could do without levels?
I can certainly see non-level-based DA character progression. That's not how Green Ronin's system is built though and rebuilding it out of the level criteria would take some intimacy with the rules that at least I don't have yet. Would be a most interesting experiment, however =)

Don't worry dear, I did not see it as an insult! I just wanted to explain it a bit further, as I totally understand your 'concern'. I had it too at first, but I notice that it somehow does not really matter. Than again, we do not really work with rules but just go and see what works.KiddDaBeauty wrote...
