I haven't played DD, but I was actually considering buying it, along with Dark Souls, for Christmas. A little present for myself. :3
Anyways, I don't remember if it was DD or Dark Souls (pretty sure it's Dark Souls), but I remember hearing that one of them had an online aspect. Like raiding another person's kingdom (PvP) or something like that. Is that mandatory, or can you play without it? I'd hate to get pwned while trying to level up since I'm new and everything.
That is indeed Dark Souls, and there is no way aorund it save to not connect online. It's not terribly intrusive most of the time, and you can only be invaded while you're alive (the default state in DS is to be undead). You'll likely enjoy the hint system you get by playing online (people can create notes for one another) more than you'll hate the intruders.

By the way, I'm at work, and it's finals week, so it's been hard to keep up with the thread. But it looks like a lot of people are dropping out of the tabletop thing. Is anyone still doing this? I do not want to buy the game if no one else does.
Seems to me a lot of people is in my position. Ie "not until after Christmas". No? =)

How funny. I'm single and I'm a teacher
So you're one of "them." The ones who are making me study 'til 9PM in the evening every.single.day for the past few weeks?

Wait, a rare chance may have opened up! Hey, MMG, you can totally message my teachers through the School's Teacher Underground Network and tell them to pass me, right? Surely they'd listen to another member of the STUN.

I wouldn't mind trading all these finals and all these essays for Dragon Age. Not. One. Bit!
