Haha... interesting read! He's wrong about Varric though... I don't really like Varric =] lol or it's more like I'm indifferent to him. Because he's right; those "nice" characters who have no opinions and agree with everything you do are dull as doorknobs. I'm really annoyed (the more time goes by) that he's returned as a companion. I mean, of all people. Boring, perfect, friendly, buddy Varric. Blahhhhh.

*grumps off into a corner* :P

I do wonder what they plan to do with Varric in the next game that's new/different, based on DG's post. It would be cool to see the Bianca thing back up on him somehow. Either she's alive or he has deal with her death or something.

Well, from that demo it seems like he won't be best pleased if you leave the villagers to die. Apparently the companions will remember stuff like that and call you out on it/question you about it later, so I'm expecting that Varric will definitely have something to say about it if you do things he doesn't agree with. I could see him leaving the group (like Aveline does in DA2) if you purposely do a bunch of really ****ty things.

Varric has a lot of room to grow story wise. Maybe he was so agreeable with Hawke simply because he liked him/her. Maybe he won't really be as nice with Inquisitor. Maybe he will, and he'll have an amazing romance arc and everything will be sunshine and rainbows and "Let's run off together and ditch this crazy war!" and then ... Bianca shows up! Dun dun duuuun!

Man, now I kinda want this to happen in game! lol

Ah, good point ladies. It's hard for me to remember that Varric's relationship with Hawke does not equal his relationship with Inquisitor. Here's hoping there's some good tasty friction... and some Bianca angst! LOL

It's weird isn't it. It's easy to forget that Hawke and the Inquisitor are two completely different people because they're both controlled by us. So it's like:

Me: "YAY! Varric, my old buddy!"

Varric: "Pleasure to meet you, Inquisitor."

Me: "Why so formal? ... Oh, right, new protagonist."

He better give us a nickname this time around.

That was a nice read, kinda makes me think that he might  have some "good" plans for Cullen but who knows,  personally I wasn't very fond of Varric being back as a full companion again because we pretty much kinda know all there is about him since he had some comics as well but thats BW's choice I guess.
I only hope that he wont turn into Anders 2.0  and be all emo about things, but to the same token its kinda of nice to have an old buddy back , altho I wont really be interested in haveing a romantic relationship with him since he kinda feels like a brother to me

I think the main reason I took a liking to Varric was that his personality and general attitude was very similar to my sarcastic male Hawke. So while Hawke had all the other companions around him losing their sh!t, getting in trouble, and/or being super serious about everything Varric was just kinda swept along with it all, just like my Hawke but still continued to crack a joke as a coping mechanism. They didn't take themselves too seriously, and I like that.

Yea thats pretty much the same reason why I liked him as well in DA2 he was the one person who wasnt complaining about everything , well him and Isabella were my 2 fav characters, but I guess its as DG said, ppl like characters that are funny and agree with our protagonist  and such.
I guess thats what makes those characters stand out more compared to others such as Cullen or Anders or  Tallis and so on, altho I kind of agree with him on the stance of  , if a character is funny and agreeable with you all the time eventually it would get boring and thats why we kind of need to have a balance between love and hate because thats what makes it interesting, atleast thats what I've got out of what he said:P

I think the problems people have with Tallis are less "she doesn't agree with me!" and more "I'm a mage, why can't I properly argue this Qun stuff?" or "I'm a Rogue, why the frickle frack did they take away my roguin' for this stealth part?"

I have issues with Tallis and none of them are 'she opposed me!' or 'she's better than my Hawke!'

...A-and I'll stop there before I get onto a ranty tangent. I think this is a ranty tangent I've done before too, so, um...

I like Varric because he was my Hawke's bro, his comments never slipped into outright bully territory (I'm still hoping for that pimp hand button), but, at the same time, he has so much potential to GROW. Yeah, he was moderate and sarcastic and witty and 'boring' as some might claim, but hell, if that's boring I guess I'm a boring person too. Same with Hawke before **** started collapsing around him. After all, Hawke didn't have a lot of reason to be unhappy before his life started falling apart.

While Varric was moderate and generally easy going, though, we got so many peeks at underlying issues he might have but no real plot lines that let us see exactly what he was going through. Yeah, we got to sort out his brother, but we never got to see him DEAL with his brother once it was resolved. We just heard he was having a difficult time with it. The same could be said for when he was suddenly shoved into the position his brother always had. We heard bits and pieces of how he was dealing with the Merchant Guild but didn't get to SEE it. And then with everything else that's happened...

It makes me personally really glad he's back. I guess some can say it's Bioware just 'bringing back the boring character because he's popular', but I think he has a TON of potential and, even though he was a full companion in DAII, we barely scraped the surface. Even the comics haven't properly scraped the surface! After all, how much do we REALLY know about Bianca?

Honestly, I think he still has a story to tell and he might just surprise us~

I will admit I was a little confused at first, same with Cassandra, considering her movie and all, but now I think both have potential and more story to tell. And Vivienne is a brand new character, so of course she has plenty of story to tell!

I reckon Varric probably has quite a sad backstory. I also have this horrible feeling that I'm gonna want to romance him again, and then have a really difficult decision to make if Cullen happens to be romanceable too, LOL.

Yes but see this kind of starts to go a lil bit in that gray area tho because by that point almost every character in the DA universe has potential to grow, and have a story, some more then others even, I mean same argument can be made for Cullen  since we know almost next to nothing about him  then Varric for example. But sometimes you have to figure how long can that story of the said character can go before it get old?

But anyway that was just my oppinon I dont really have anything against Varric  as I said and most ppl have said before Varric was everyones bro witch doesnt make it a bad thing at all.
I simply just feel  like some characters need to evolve more then others that is all, now thats not to say that Varric has no more room to grow, he certantly does, but in my oppinion I think we know a weee bit more about Varric then we do with Cullen

I guess that was one benefit to DA2, we didn't really find out all that much about the companions backgrounds, especially Varric's, so he's still gonna feel quite fresh from a story arc/personality stand point.

Well, not really. Let's use Alistair for an example! We saw him grow in DA:O, and while it could be argued that he has the potential to grow further, as we saw in the comics, that wasn't a type of growth that needed to be shown in a game. Varric, on the other hand, we really don't know that much about. We know he's down to earth, that he has a brother, that he's part of the Merchant Guild and that he once had a love named Bianca... anything deeper than that? We don't know. We don't even know exactly how he works the Merchant Guild or exactly what happened to Bianca/what she's like. We don't even know what his family was like beyond how he was the 'little brother.'

...Saying that, of course there's other characters that have potential and the like. And hey! I'm here in the Cullen thread wanting a Cullen, so I'm definitely not saying that Cullen doesn't have potential, story to explore, or a tale to tell! I'm just saying Varric is far from one note and we know a lot less about him than we think. (:

The only thing that makes me squint at the potential of a Varric romance is how the 'hurdle' he and the Inquisitor would have to overcome in his romance arc would probably be Bianca. I... I'm not to keen on the 'past lover' thing. I have nothing against people having relationships under their belt, mind! It's just when it's such a issue that it prevents them from moving on that I falter...

Admittedly that's why I set aside the Shepard I had reserved for Steve. I love Steve as a character but his whole story arc is about him moving on from losing his husband, so to add romance to that... and then Shepard dies...

Aha... ha... haha...

Ow, my feels.

That's completely subjective though. I find Alistair immensely intriguing as a character, and still find Varric dull as dirt  Sorry, I don't see the potential. To me, Varric didn't have any issues, which made him boring.

I hope he finds some issues for DA:I. I tend to dislike bro characters. (Hello, Garrus!)

Excuse me while I go off-topic here...

I feel like this has been asked somewhere before, but does Thedas have it's own version of Christmas? Maybe they celebrate the birth of Andraste or something. Is it like Epiphany? Do they give gifts to each other and use a mistletoe? Do they believe in Santa Claus (or the DA equivalent)? Do they drink eggnog and go caroling? Do they hang stockings and roast chestnuts? Do they decorate Christmas trees?

I think many characters have the opportunity to grow in a way that would be appealing to show in the game, including exploring more backgrounds.

I'm never like 'that character must be back' or 'I never want to see them again'. But yeah, I wouldn't mind to see more of some of them, including Anders, Cullen and more

I'm pretty much like this! I like and am interested in all the characters, and there's not one I've ever been not happy with. There's been parts of characters that've made me want to smack them, but that's a different thing.

I guess I was just trying to discuss? But I suppose there's no real point...

There were the Feastday prank gifts given out for DA:O. Feastday = Solstice??
