I get it that the writers avoid fanfic involving canon characters because portrayal of those characters differs from their vision. Not all developers are writers. Also, it seems as if they never pass up an opportunity to deride fanfic writers to the extent that it has become not only accepted, but expected. They make a joke of it, and so do we.
Some fanfic is bad. Some art is bad. Some cosplay is bad. It's true, although not universally so. But artists and cosplayers are encouraged and lauded for their effort not because every chibi Fenris cartoon is a masterpiece, but because they're celebrating something they love through their art. So are writers, incidentally, it's just that people are conditioned to make jokes about fanfic. They're a neglected portion of the fan base who are engaging in something they love according to their talents. It's unfortunate that anyone should feel marginalized or excluded for this, but we are.
This would have been the perfect opportunity to show fanfic writers that they are a valued part of the community even if no dev will ever read what they write, but that isn't how it worked out. The groups that traditionally get the rewards got some more. I don't begrudge them that! It's their party and they get to invite who they want. But I do wonder why they bothered putting out a general call for beta testers.
Please understand that I am not in any way criticizing the efforts of cosplayers, artists, and video bloggers! I admire their work, and it is nice to see that good things are coming their way for it. It just pains me to see how one group - potentially the largest "fanworks" category - is excluded once again.
For what it's worth, I'm not exerting myself on my own behalf. I'm nowhere near prolific enough for anybody to even know my name, let alone care about my involvement in the community. And I have a habit of saying things that people don't really want to hear. But there are writers who put everything they have into their writing on a consistent basis, and I appreciate the time, effort, and love these writers put into their art.

Perhaps because many academics are alsonerdsfanfic writers xD
Nicely said. It is a little too easy poke fun at fanfic when, heck, half of us have written some. Fan love is fan love, no matter the medium or the level of talent.berelinde wrote...

How about those who devote countless hours writing fanfic or doing fanart? If you are going to say this is based on merit, dont they deserve the same? But they will not get it.

They absolutely deserve the same, but realistically it's probably a lot harder for them to pinpoint which fanfic author/artist is connected to what email/application, compared to finding fans who put their names and faces out there on a weekly basis. I'm not trying to say one form of fan devotion is better than the other, anyone that puts their hard work and love into something that is created not only for themselves but the entire community has my respect. I guess my overall point is that the guys and gals that got the early invitations certainly are well deserving of it, and I don't think it's right to get mad at the Bioware devs for giving something back.

As to the bolded, so far no one's said otherwise (I think). Although I will say that if you are someone like {insert famous artist/cosplayer here} that you are already adored by hundreds, possibly thousands. (Believe me, I've been "the" fanfic writer in a fandom... it is like being on drugs lol). So the extra pat on the back isn't really needed, although if the author of the fandom I used to participate in had sent me a message saying he loved my fics that would have been worth all the hundreds of comments and fanart I'd gotten previously.
As to whether or not we're allowed to get mad, well, you can't control people's feelingsPersonally I'm not mad anymore; I'm just at the sighing and shaking my head stage now.
Plus I've just never quite fit into this fandom. Like the Asunder fiction contest for example. Some of the entries that won read like chapters from pulp novels. Okay, so mine wasn't great. But I got like four comments on the darn thing, something I spent days working on, and one comment even told me I didn't have enough action and shouldn't use words like "pants" lol

I'm not trying to control anyones feelings, so if that's how it sounded I apologize. Personally, I dont think it's fair to get mad at the Bioware guys for choosing YT people/cosplayers/etc for the 1st round of Keep Beta invites, but I can understand how the rest of the fanbase feels left out or hurt. I guess I'm really just playing the Devil's advocate here.

Yeah, and I like to argue a little too much. Sorry![]()
Spring will be here before we know it, and by then I'll surely have gotten my grubby little hands on the Keep.
About the pants, I don't know. I guess I was supposed to write "breeches" or "{insert fantasy costume trope}". The fact remains that the guy was wearing pants. Oh, and they had pockets. I wrote that he put his hands in his pockets. I think they commented on that, too. What am I supposed to write, fabric holes? He slipped his hands into his fabric holes. That sufficiently "medieval" enough for you, angry fan guy??New Year's resolution: don't let fanfic comments get me down. Not that I really write fanfic anymore, but even so. Oh, there was this one time when I had one character who was incapacitated and was being tended to by his future love interest (real romance, smaltzy stuff, I tell ya). Well one person wrote me a long comment, telling me she was upset that I didn't address how the character went to the bathroom. Really? Really.

That bolded bit needs to be a thing immediatelyAnd who wants to hear about anyone dropping a deuce? Isn't that like an unspoken rule, one of those things that you just dont discuss. Hell even toliet paper commercials dance around the subject.
Edit: OMG I just thought of a good theme for our next thread page milestone. Awkward encounters/situations w/ Cullen and his romantic interest
I'm not mad, and never was.littlenikki wrote...

LOL FWIW, after much writerly soul searching, I gave my DA character pockets, too. If it breaks your suspension of disbelief then so be it, but then, it's a fantasy world that miraculously speaks English, too.motomotogirl wrote...
