I dunno. That's probably a bit too meta. I mean... once he writes it, it's not really fanfic anymore, is it?  /head hurts

Sure it is..fan fic. David being its number one fan. lol! But anything that's not in-game, I connsider a form of fan fic.  It does get a bit quantum-y when you think abt too hard, tho.

So, don't think abt too hard.

The feedback might be interesting. But then I think the BSN is an amazing character profile smorgasborg itself. Characters/personalities; dialogues; how they interact in natural ways; how they react to things. My God.

Woohoo!! My headphones + mic came in. And the holidays are... kind of over? If anyone still wants to try playing the DA role-playing game, I'm still game :)

But I tried to read the book and it just was over my head. So hopefully an experienced gamer could explain it to us newbs.

LOL By that definition then there's already three whole novels worth of DG's fanfic.

Yeah, and about 3 volumes of comic books with Gaider's fanart and fanfiction all combined into one.

I think once it's for profit, it's no longer fanfiction. Consider the Star Trek and Star Wars novels... not fanfiction, but not always canon.

In Japan, some mangaka will write non-canon stories about their own characters called doujinshi. Maybe this would be similar?

LOL For myself, I don't think I'd consider anything the writer writes himself, about his own creations, to be fanfic, whether it's for profit or otherwise. I suppose a little drabble he writes for fun on the side isn't necessary canon, like the Zev drabble, but I still don't think I'd call it fanfic. I guess it's because I just wouldn't classify him as a fan. He's the writer, even if he's part of a larger franchise.

But then, the Star Trek and Star Wars novels example is where the definition does get dodgy.  Like, the amazon.com fanfic site that will pay fanfic writers who submit for certain properties. Is that still fanfic?

I mean I think so, technically no, but he may just explore a world that could never be. I remember he did a "fanfic" for the end of KOTOR with a female Revan/Carth romance. Lol I actually asked him to write that Fenris and Shale story he joked around about.

Maybe we consider everything he doesn't get paid for/is sanctioned by BioWare or EA?

I haven't read a lot of fanfiction for Dragon Age, but I often recommend R2's Coming Storm.

Egad, I thought it was uncanny that DG started reading DA fanfic right when we were talking about it... but it seems fanfic has been in the news again. Perhaps some of you already heard about this, but I hadn't and it seems a bit apropos to our discussion. (BTW, for the Americans, no Sherlock season 3 spoilers).

D'aww, thanks Danny!

Hmm, good question, Scr0ll. I'd love to hear others' recommendations. I've always heard good things about Coffee Black, but haven't gotten around to reading it myself. I haven't done much reading myself recently, but a couple stories that come to mind for me are Aquila by Lywinis (I pretty much love all her Sebastian stuff), Through These Pages by Defira1985 (VERY NSFW), and Atonement by Suilven (she was a finalist for the DA: Asunder fan competition).

For my own stuff... shucks. I suppose I'd still recommend my first DA fic, Knight's Bloom, which remains my favorite thing I've written. While far from perfect, it was a labor of love and actually turned out ok for a n00b.

So DG reads fan fic? I thought he avoided it like the plague.

@davidgaider: Feel a bit better today, but I suspect it'll still be spent on the couch. Time for more Face Off marathon, and maybe some DA fanfiction.

@davidgaider: Gosh. I guess sometimes you need to take those warnings at the start of a fic *really* seriously, huh?

@davidgaider: Evidently I give a fic 3 to 5 sentences to do something interesting, or I move on. Found a couple that are pretty neat so far.

He's actually reading them? I thought he avoided them like the plague too! Oooo, I hope he's been reading some of the fic you guys have done in here!

Whoa! That's actually really cool!

I mean, I'm sorry he's sick, but I am pleased to hear that he's expanding his reading repertoire.

Edit: It's possible that the timing is mere coincidence. Or it could have been on his to-do list for a while but downtime was scarce. Whether it coincidence or not, it's still awesome.

That is horrifying, and shame on this person for mocking women's fantasy... fanfiction is one of the few outlets for women to express sexuality without censure. How frustrating.

That said, I've felt inclined for a long, long time to edit a lot of my old fics and remove the NSFW content. It just embarrasses me for some reason! I was fine writing it at the time and even got a kick out of fans' responses, but now I just look at what I've written and feel as if I've debased my own stories lol Of course, one of my stories (original fiction) I'm trying to turn into a novel, and so the NSFW stuff definitely won't make the cut lol Also, yes, I'm laughing at my belief in myself that I could actual write a novel....

Poor girl :( I have only written one NSFW chapter, and I am warning people in front (just in case). I had thought long before I added it, but done so in the end anyway. I thought too that DG was avoiding fanfic like the plague, so interesting to hear that he is reading them every now and then (and now I'm getting more worried about the NSFW part )

Oh, MMG, I'm still up for the DA RPG! I still have to order the box though, but wanted to wait with it until we were sure whether or not it would happen.

I really should clean up my act. Writing smut was fun back in the day. As you say, at the time, it felt liberating, but I'm kinda getting bored with it. There are times when it's a convenient way to portray the relationship between two people - the dynamics of their intimacy and what their approach to sex says about them as characters - but there has to be a reason for it to be there. That's probably why I'm not really embarrassed about the naughty parts of my more recent fics (and why I'm so horribly embarrassed about some of my older stuff to the point where I can't even read it to edit it).

Good luck with your novel, moto! That's a tremendous undertaking, and I wish you well.

I wasn't going to buy/order anything honestly since the whole book is posted online ^_^

Thanks :D The first draft was posted online, just for fun, then after I'd written all 20 chapters I realized I had basically written a novella. It was a thrilling thought... so I decided to rework it and edit it so it could be a proper narrative. But it's so hard :(

So here is the fic I like to recommend; it's Anders/Hawke (or Hawke/Anders, there's no sex), and that's male Hawke. But the gender isn't important; it could easily be female Hawke if rewritten: https://www.fanficti...ifestos-Welcome

I like it because to me it accurately captures the pain both men had to be feeling after that final incident. The bitterness and distrust... I always wondered how a Hawke who runs away with Anders afterward has to feel about everything.

AND... I just realized she has a CULLEN story!!!!! It is Cullen/Anders (Anders/Cullen?) :D It's young Cullen in Ferelden with young sassy mage Anders. Now I absolutely loved it up until the end... when I feel Cullen acted kind out of character. I wonder what you guys think: https://www.fanficti...hese-Thresholds

I don't read a lot of fanfiction these days - I mostly look up a pairing to see if anyone has written it. Then I read it, judge whether or not I like the pairing, then go on my merry way. (Most current curiosity is Harkon/Dragonborn. Whooo boy. O_o )

I only have three fanfics posted right now; two for Dragon Age, and one for the musical The Producers. I was going to make the latter a full story, but I lost the plot after my last computer crashed. One of my DA fics has sex, but it's in vague detail - which I think makes the act a bit more powerful. Less is more, as they say.

I do have a bunch of smut somewhere, but it stays in its designated folders and notebooks never to see the light of day.

To be honest, I don't read much of it either but when I do it's usually Cullen/*insert character* either because one of you wrote it, or (in the past) for inspiration to come up with new question to ask you in here, or because I'm going through an impatient phase whilst waiting for DAI to be released, lol.

I must confess I had to google just who the f*ck was this catti moron...uh..i mean..Caitlin Moran. Yeah, that's it. And she's got some book about how to be a woman? Lmao! Being a self assured woman does not equate with acting like a rude b*tch.

I'm sorry, but the way she treated fans, the cast and crew of that show really ticked me off. I mean, I'm all for ppl being honest and straightforward, and i love playful teasing...but there is a line that to cross it means becoming mean spirited. I despise mean spirited "humor", and mean spirited ppl. To have a mean spirit is to be careless and cruel with others. Poking fun at ppl is one thing, humiliating them is something else altogether. Everybody in this world as been thru hell and paid their dues one way or another. They don't deserve being humiliated, too. /rant.

And why in the world did the cast and crew go along with it if doing so made them feel uncomfortable? For heaven's sake, if something makes you feel uncomfortable, don't do it. You don't have to. A firm, but polite "No". If that doesn't work, a "Hell no" would be called for. Bah.

Oh, and MMG, write that novel! Write it, then rewrite it, then rewrite it again. Lol! Cuz, yeah....it's a process. And the novel will only get better the more you work it.

I just say this cuz too many ppl have great ideas, but then hesitate cuz they start to doubt. But I say to hell with that. "Ain't nobody got time for that". Lol!
