I think Varric could be considered very important because he was there in Kirkwall, where everything went down. He was there for that whole mess, something that arguably is shaping the events of Thedas at the moment.R2s Muse wrote...

One read of this is that Varric's even more important in DA:I than DA2? Maybe? Regardless, now he's "a major part of the plot," as opposed to a gimmick, for lack of a better word. This gives me more hope for a Bianca the Person sighting/plot or something more significant for our shortbread.
As for Bianca, I would like to see that be his personal questline, so that he can close that chapter and gain some closure. He got a little bit in the comics, but this would be a good time to help his character further grow.
