Personally, I'll have my Inquisitor as an archer, Cullen as a tank, Sera as a dual wielding stabby stab, and Vivienne as a fabulous healer and or damage dealer.

So on a not totally unrelated note, what are people thinking of in terms of their 'main' party, based on the confirmed and speculated companions? This is just for everyday adventuring, not for a quest that seems like a certain companion may have fun things to thicken the plot, like Beardface with a Warden quest.
Personally, I'll have my Inquisitor as an archer, Cullen as a tank, Sera as a dual wielding stabby stab, and Vivienne as a fabulous healer and or damage dealer.
Well... based on what we have been seeing so far ( as far as companions that have been relieved to us)... I would take Cass, Viv and maybe Varric although I am gonna be playing as a rogue but im gonna be a dagger rogue and not an archer.
So Varric would be good for that.. I would also take Varric because he use to be my best bro in DA2 ( BUT if he had a personality change ala Anders .. then I think He would be staying in camp/ house most of the time) and yes I know you said not to base the companion selection on quests but... that how I usually base them, that or depending how much I like the characters
I know there are a lot more companions then that, but for me personally, Im kind of "limited" right now as who would I choose based on who Ive seen so far, ( as far as the character descriptions go), If Cullen is confirmed as a companion, then ofc I would take him over Cass, but that's just to see what kind of insight he can provide during some quests, like regarding the mages and whatnot, or as others have said , maybe try to change his views about mages and not be all " KILL ALL THE MAGES" as for other mages or rogues such as Dorian or Sera... HMM idk ... I would have to check out their description 1st... beacause to a certain extent I dont want them to be b!tching/ bickering with each other ALL the time, I mean that could be fun... for a while... but after a while it can get a bit old: example -Alistair / Morrigan

As for DAI, based on the rumoured companion, I'd say Mage Elf Inquisitor, Varric, Cassandra and Cullen/Warden.

This list assumes that Cullen is not a companion, because that would really screw up my party ideas so far
1. Mage 1: My Inquisitor as a damage dealing mage (with a few healing spells)
2. Warrior: Grey Warden as Sword and Shield or Iron Bull as 2H (whichever is my LI
)
3. Rogue: I would prefer a dual wielding rogue, but I might have to spec Varric as a dual wielder
4. Mage 2: A healer that can buff and dispel, with a few damaging spells.

I tend to have two party members who are pretty much constant, but I change out the third frequently.
In Origins, I pretty much always had Alistair and Wynne. In DA2, I pretty much always had Fenris and Anders. Then the third party slot would go to whoever I was in the mood for and/or had the abilities I needed at the time and/or seemed to fit the story best for a particular quest.
It worked out nicely because in both cases my character (archer Cousland/mage Hawke) was romancing a warrior (Alistair and Fenris respectively) so the tank role in the party was also the LI.
It's hard to speculate on my party setup for Inquisition without knowing more about my options. All I'm sure of is that if I can take Cullen, I will.
Yes, the innuendo in that "take" is intentional. ![]()

Pff, hard, as we hardly know yet a thing about the companions... (apart from Varric, if he is still like he was in DA:2) I tend to pick the party based on their personality and how much they fit with my character. I guess that my first playthrough will be as a human warrior or rogue, so I'd like to have a mage (Vivienne or any other), Varric for being a bro and than any of the other characters. Than again, I tend to switch a lot in order to have quality time with all the people.

I'll actually admit that I take my LI everywhere, and build the rest of my party around that. But, I absolutely have to have a balanced party, and once I have that balance, I rarely change. Unless I need to do someone's personal quest or whatever. OR if I can't seem to find a way to play a certain character. Like I found Sten, Oghren, and Aveline really hard to play. Sten constantly died on me, so I've never heard most of his dialogue since I never took him anywhere.
So, for DA:I, it's gonna depend on who I'm shagging. There. I've admitted it.
Don't think less of me.

Wow, great attitude.
Why is it the Cullen thread seem to be only people who doubt his companion status?
I am wondering if Varric will be Bianca-locked in DAI again. Personally, I hope he will, since it's a big part of his character, but I also want several cosmetic options for Bianca.

I'm really not judging you since I do the same. What's the point of bagging the hottest available companion if you're not going to show them off? ![]()
And I agree with you on Sten, Oghren and Aveline. Though I do love Sten and Aveline, I barely ever took them with me, but Sten was mostly due to the fact I couldn't find armour that looked good on him.

Not at all! I did the same in both prior DA games. They both happened to be warriors, but had they not been, I would have structured the party around having them.
It makes sense from an in-character standpoint because presumably if your PC loves somebody they would want to spend time around them, and adventuring together would surely deepen a relationship even before it turned into romance.

I think because we're some of the people who care most if he is or isn't. I don't want to get too attached to the idea of having him as a companion because I don't want to be too disappointed if he turns out not to be a party member. I mean yeah, there would be some disappointment because I do really want him to be, but a lot less so if I treat it as just a possibility I hope for rather than a certainty that I pin all my DA3 hopes and dreams on, if that makes sense?

Yeah, my Origins party was always pretty my Alistair, Wynne, Morrigan and my rogue Tabris. (City Elf Pride, yo
)
And for the longest time, since I didn't have the Exiled Prince DLC, Fenris was my LI and my tank. So once again, I'm hoping to have a tanky LI. Failing that, I'm sure I could creative with Vivienne. ![]()

I'm definitely going to try and switch around as much as possible in DAI. Like in ME, I only ever had Kaidan and Liara in my party so I never really bonded with any of the other characters. Not to mention the fact to talk to the others I had to go through a loading screen. Not worth it.

LOL I think for me it's that I'm worried I'll miss out on some interaction if s/he's not always with me. I think it also makes sense from a role play POV, since of course you tend to spend an inordinate amount of time with someone you're trying to romance. But I literally NEVER leave them behind, which is healthy from a gameplay POV, less healthy from a role play POV. LOL

TBH, I think that, contrary to what most folks think, we tend to have a pretty realistic view of his role in the game 'round these parts. Sure, we'd love for him to be there, but honestly, the evidence just isn't there like some folks seem to think. But, I also agree with Hannah that for us, moderating our expectation is important, more important than for someone who doesn't give a crap if he shows up.

I'm not necessarily committed to having my usual party members be a warrior and a not-me mage, for the record. It just happened to work out that way in the past.
Aria Cousland (archer/rogue) was in love with Alistair so she wanted to adventure with him, and she also wanted Wynne around for the motherly advice because she missed her own mom.
Mercy Hawke (mage, mainly offense with some backup healing) was romancing Fenris so he came along. She didn't get along particularly well with Anders, but she did want to hear his point of view because she thought his opinions were worthwhile even when they disagreed. Generally in making decisions she would aim for a point somewhere between what Fenris suggested and what Anders suggested, for maximum sanity. ![]()
I generally let my characters decide these things, and my Inquisitor does not yet have enough information to make an informed decision.

If Dorian is an elf, it's going to be super elf-tastic.

On an unrelated note.. I like Viv but I hope she's not one of those "atrocious" (for lack of a better word) type of girl (high school girl) that kinda makes you feel like crap because you didnt wear the "right type of outfit for this specific occasion" or whatever, kinda like Leliana when she was hinting like "omg u have such pretty hair but not as pretty as the Orlisian girls who had live birds in them" type of thing.. like I know that Viv is apparently "big" into fashion... but form that one thread in the DAI forum she sounds like one of those stuck-up cheerleaders who only wears brand clothing and would look down on you if you dress otherwise.. idk that's just my opinion

She sounds like old money to me. The opposite of what we call nouveau riche in Louisiana. Very judgmental and high society, but she says it with a condescending smile. She doesn't believe for a moment that you could ever rise to her level. But she pities you in a way for it, and treats your kindly because you're just a poor shmuck and that's like her noblesse oblige or something.
