Oh yeah, the flame is coming out of her hand, which totally means she was a mage! It couldn't be because she was sentenced to death by fire and was purified by the flames, which in turn became a symbol of her church!

That's sort of like saying that Jesus is depicted as being nailed to the cross because he was a carpenter. :P

Ha! That made me laugh.

But to be serious for a moment, not quite. At least, not in my mind. If they were really going to go for a whole "purified by fire" thing, they'd quite literally have fire enveloping the statue as a way to do so.

The Ash Wraiths are people that immolated themselves to imitate Andraste's burning/cleansing. The Warden can walk through fire and be purified as well. If they're willing to immolate themselves and symbolically cleanse themselves, why wouldn't they have a statue that's cloaked in fire completely?

And so too, wouldn't other Chantries use the same type of statue depiction they used if it was truly a method of representing the purification? Other Chantries depict Andraste as a Warrior wielding a sword. Granted, they didn't know about Haven and Haven was one of the many cults that existed at the time that worshipped the Maker/Andraste -- and were originally the true religious group -- but my point is that wouldn't the Chantries we visit depict Andraste similarly if that was the whole point of the Haven group's fireball Andraste?

And maybe she did wield a sword. But that this one shows her in robes that seem more mage-like then religious in nature and has her wielding fire from her hand speaks volumes IMO. More so when we remember that these people knew Andraste and that the Guardian will state that she would meditate for days at a time without food or water -- and the Fadewalker boots state that a Mage of the Antivan Circle liked to walk through the Fade and did so once for 3 days before being buried alive (due to thinking she was dead).

So there's a similarity between the two, in that Mages can go for days on end in a seemingly unconscious/meditating state.

There's a great deal of evidence to make one think she was a Mage. Whether she was truly chosen by the Maker is another matter, but the two aren't mutually exclusive. She could've been both a Mage and the Maker's Chosen Prophet.

Well, there are practical reasons for not doing htat. A statue with fire coming out of its hand via magic is a really elaborate lantern or torch. A whole statue enveloped by flame is a house fire screaming to happen.

But nothing conclusive. I've heard nothing that doesn't make me dismiss this evidence as wishful thinking on the part of forumites who desperately want the Chantry to be wrong because the Chantry sucks, yo.

But anyway, that Cullen guy! Isn't he dreamy? I heard he's dreamy.

Well... considering it's possible to erect a barrier prison over people, one could argue the same could be done for objects.

But nothing conclusive.

Of course. We don't have anything conclusive, but we do have enough to arouse suspicions.

True, some people simply want it for those reasons, which isn't all that bad. I just want the Chantry to be wrong because of the delicious irony it'd create, doubly so if she was a Blood Mage. A triple whammy would occur if she was the Dumat OGB -- or whatever Old God truly led the 1st Blight. For bonus points, make her a Somniari.

To me the Chantry doesn't completely suck, but it's certainly not something I really care enough about to say "Hey stop harassing them!"

Due in large part to the whole Mage-Templar situation originating from what they've done throughout history, so I'm happy to see it come crashing down on them.

But anyway, that Cullen guy! Isn't he dreamy? I heard he's dreamy.

Not as dreamy as Maraas.

Holy underpants this would be wonderfully evil! Mind you, I'm also the one who felt that cameos of our Warden and Hawke should be as dead bodies. lol

Also,  my  eyes first read "Not as dreamy as my a**" and it made me laugh quite loudly. So thank you. Posted Image

But nothing conclusive.

Never given it much thought, but.. There's also nothing conclusive about the existence of the Maker.

Andraste as a Mage.. It's not really much of a stretch. I've been mulling the idea over for the last few minutes.

We know for a fact that Spirits and Demons exist. We know that they're capable of communicating across the Fade. We also know that take more interest in Mages than they do normal non-magical people.

It's not much of a stretch to believe that Andraste, instead of hearing the Holy Voice of the Maker, was in fact a Mage, or even your bog-standard non-magical personage, consorting with a Spirit of some kind.

It makes sense, and it requires no faith to believe in it. So i can understand why it's a popular theory. It also would make for an interesting twist on the Chantry's beliefs, which isn't something i can honestly argue against because good story is so hard to come by these days.

Personally? I hope it's going to be one of those unending arguments that never gets laid to rest. If Bioware are smart enough, they'll never reveal the truth behind the Maker. Some things just need to remain in question.

Nothing yet, but there's been some interesting tweets from the DA team.

Whilst your here, we all read your tumblr with Cullen's DA:O dialogue (I adore his comment about Andraste and the Maker.) Do you have the voice samples of his unused dialogue? Like, his battle cries etc?

Hmmm I kind of don't know what you're talking about lol

VampOrchid: Didn't you make a Tumblr post with a dialogue tree of all Cullens lines in DA:O and a post with a recorded sample of unused dialogue with Cullen wondering if Andraste was a virgin? Or was that someone else lol. Maybe I'm getting confused or something.

It crazy to think we've actually hit 300 pages. When I first came in here we were only at 35ish and the previous Cullen thread was at 60ish lol.

OMFG! Did you listen to his animation voice clips? Both surreal and hilarious, I didn't know he could throw his voice like that, i suppose it makes sense since he does a lot of voice acting lol. Plus it was kinda odd hearing him talking in his Cullen voice about being a Mage (I dunno what cartoon it was from though.)

Lol, nah it's a joint effort between all of us!

Well, it does. And the Maker is even more transparently evil than... a controversial transparent evil thing. In fact, one thing I wanted to do in DAO is transcribe Hespith's poem, tape a copy to the broodmother's corpse, then drag it into Denerim's cathedral and say "Yep, this was all the Maker's idea."

I believe in the Old Gods; not only do they physically appear in the world, but Dumat actually answers sacrifices. I might believe in the Creators; they at least seem internally consistent in their character and their actions. But if the Maker did everything he supposedly did, he's a horrendous monster

In any case, I never troll. I'm completely serious. The broodmother incident is when my Warden completely dropped any hint of being Andrastian.

I think the Maker is supposed to be whatever you believe him to be. Be that as a saint, sinner, all powerful overlord or non-existent. That's the beauty of Dragon Age, it leaves things purposely ambiguous enough to allow us to come to our own conclusions that fit with our own beliefs and way in which we choose to play.

Personally I don't mind what the Maker does, he could be a giant space nug for all I care, so long as it adds to the lore and story in some way then I'm a happy camper.
