Leliana was mentioned in Asunder, but Leliana is not a companion.

 

Not being mentioned could signs of being a companion. If Cullen were merely an NPC he'd probably be in the novels, just like her....

It could just mean that's he's not in Orlais (yet). The (beginning of the ) book seems to be just before Asunder.

His name is Felassin, and he is an elven mage that Briala uses as a contact. What is interesting is that Briala makes a point of saying that she is just as Dalish as he is, alluding to the fact he is not truly Dalish either.

He uses some interesting magic though. He used some weird psychometric spell to track down a person for Briala, just by holding a feather from the man's hat. Also, his staff was a pretty small twig of wood, which he could grow into an full length staff within seconds. He had some Dalish tattoos, but not sure on the hair thing. I had the impression that he was bald as well though.

Then I highly suggest you avoid those spoiler tags I placed. You are gonna love this novel though. Although Asunder was good, from what I have read, this book seems like it's gonna be a lot more fun, particularly since DAI is coming around, and this already has answered some of my questions.
