I don't know if anybody really ventures around twitter/tumblr, but I definitely see a fair share of, not Cullen hate (don't really care whether you like him or not, each to their own), but just outright Cullen Thread mockery. "Cullen Thread is such a joke great entertainment", "only the Cullen Thread could have such logic" and the usual "stupid fangirls" attitude.

It's just... Why does the fanbase always have to be drug into it? I'd be lying if I didn't say it makes me just want to completely drop the BW fandom altogether.

Don't leave!!! :(

Yeah but come on, that's just funny; I mean the joke's on them because this thread is super tame and contains the most reasonable individuals in the entire BSN LOL All that does is make me laugh.

Don't leave!!! :(

I've stuck it out since 2010, I think I can handle some somewhat rude comments.

It just piles up year after year. And I say this as someone who was a big Kaidan and Anders fan. Booooy, that was sure a lot of fun. disney1.gif

Dragon Age ‏@dragonage

Follower Friday: Each month, we’ll look at one of the followers you’ll meet in #DAI. Learn about Vivienne next week!

Interesting! So... are we taking this to mean that they'll be revealing the other companions for the first time on a monthly basis, or just that we'll get a more in-depth look at them at that time?

Vivienne is indeed pretty! Unfortunately I get the feeling she and my Inquisitor aren't going to get along very well.  :P

This may be the "over 40" and "parent of a teenager" in me, but I don't care what "people" say about who I like or don't like in a video game. I'm a fan of Ser Cullen because I think he's an extremely interesting character that gives some very interesting insight into the kind of man it takes to be a good templar.  I think knowing more about him would be very good for a sympathetic look at the Templar Order.  I am sorry some of ya'll take other people's opinions to heart. *gives everyone hugs*

Not everyone's gonna like him. This is my favorite part of the Dragon Age writing-the characters have real quirks and foibles that make us love and hate them.  They make us stick up for them and revile them.  They write characters that make us write fan fiction to explore them even further.

This is the internet.  There are *always* going to be people who loudly and vehemently hate what you love. The cool thing, though, about this being the internet is that you don't have to let that matter. That's why I stay here in this thread, for the most part, and why I don't always jump into every discussion in here. We're, by and large, a pretty reasonable bunch, and it's very easy to keep it that way because we respect, in here, opinions that differ from our own.

Ahh, anyway. Out there can be scary, and if it's upsetting, don't go out there. Stay here, we'll make cookies. (By the way, the shortbread was pretty awesome. Gonna make some changes and try it out, then I'll post the recipe here if people want it. :D)

Remember you didn't choose the fangirl life. The fangirl life chose you! XD

But in all seriousness, it does wear down after a while. All that hate is unnecessary, and it's mostly done because everyone else does it and the anonymity the internet provides gives people leave to be cruel. Because like Lola said, nobody in their right mind would approach a fan on the street and say what they do on the forums. I would love to see a social experiment done where the internet bully/troll meets their victim. It would make things much more real. And when it comes to fictional characters, people need to check themselves. Throwing around phrases like "he's the next hitler" and the like does not make them right.

I mean, we all agree Cullen waited way too long to put his foot down, AND if he knew about the horrible abuses going on...heads will roll.

People aren't that cruel when it comes to Anders, or Merrill. That wave has passed over mostly. Cullen's flame is still burning.

I think they just need to admit it.

They love Cullen. XD

Haha! Contact with teenagers seems to be the common denominator here! They blast that sensitivity right out of you!  ;)

(To the younger members of this thread - I totally heart you guys and am just being silly!  ^_^)

Yeah, I can't really bring myself to get all worked up about what people who don't post here (and I would guess don't even read here) are saying about us. If they have nothing better to do with their time than make fun of other people on the internet, that says a lot more about them than about us.

I think it's just silly to hate the fans of a character one doesn't like. There are plenty of characters in the DA universe that other people like that I'm indifferent to or dislike, but hey, different strokes!  :)

This pretty much what i've picked up on over the years. That it's not so much directed at the characters but towards those that like them, which happens to be for the most part, usually women. Years ago I remember a conversation at a friends party with a guy about Mass Effect. It led onto talking about the characters and he started spewing the same old lines about Kaidan that i'd heard a million times on the forum. Ultimately it transpired that the reason he disliked him wasn't so much the character itself but that he was there purely to serve female gamers. The 'conversation' went downhill pretty quickly.

While it's obviously not true for all, I do feel that unfortunately there is a significant proportion, of male gamers out there that will never like certain characters just because women do. We've encroached on what they feel is their exclusive domain, hence 'fangirl' being used in such a derogatory way as it is and why they 'attack' the fanbases of those characters the way they do. Again I know that this is not the case for many male gamers of course it isn't but it doesn't make it any less frustrating, especially when you see that fundamentally nothing has changed over the the last several years.

Sounds like it's their way of gradually revealing companions. So it'll go something like: Vivienne, Cassandra, Varric, Elf guy and so on. Sooooo, by June onwards will start getting new companions revealed, lol.

...So could potentially be November before we find out whether or not Cullen is a companion?

Way to force me to practice my patience, Bioware, sheesh!  :P

Which could also mean November is when the game will come out? ... That's not Fall though, that's Winter, LOL!

Nah I'd have to disagree about Anders. People still go off on him. It's pretty disturbing to hear people wax poetic about how much they enjoy killing him.

I am definitely working on resetting my expectations - I had kind of figured that we'd be finding out more about the companions within the next couple of months.

I'd be more excited about this if the first one wasn't Vivienne. I mean she's interesting and all and I certainly like her look, but I feel like I know enough about her already to tide me over till we actually play the game. I don't see the point of knowing that much about the characters in advance - a basic overview seems sufficient. I'm sure it'll be cool and all but I'm not exactly glued to my seat with anticipation of next week (or likely the following two months, assuming it's Varric and Cass.)

Allan's usually pretty awesome, but some of his responses in the "marketing to women" thread just made me want to sigh and beat my head against the screen (I opted to just sigh). He's a thoughtful and considerate guy but I guess sometimes it's hard to see around the patriarchy, even when you're genuinely trying.

Yes, I agree that almost always I like his posts. But, he's not really been a supporter of my efforts to shutdown bullying of Cullenites in the past, perhaps for the same reasons.

The "whiny" thing perplexed me to no end back then. Kaidan hardly spoke in ME1. Especially to a m!shep, you hardly got anything out of him with a male character. I think people just projected Carth onto him since they share the same VA and thus, Kaidan=Carth (nevermind they are really nothing alike besides being space soldiers)

"Whiny" has since seemingly become another word for "male character that I don't like".

But erm, to get back on track.

@Adela

Congratulations, That is awesome. It sounds like so much fun, I hope you love it.  :D

Hmm, this makes me sad. I've never seen that before. Now I wish I hadn't heard that.  :(

[[edit to clarify: Obviously we see Cullen fan hate every which way. But I don't usually see Cullen THREAD hate. I mean, I figure, most folks don't even know about us. ]]

Yeah, they've already said quite the bit about her in that Character Kit and other little blurbs. I'd like to discover -some- things in-game. Worried they'll start saying too much about everyone and won't leave enough surprises to find whilst playing and talking to them. Unless they just want to go into detail about certain things about the characters that they won't even mention in-game.

I wouldn't mind it if they did a short story about each companion like they did with the DA2 companions.

I'll take short stories only if one of the characters eats the flesh of another. Or transcends that.  B)
