You know, I'm going to throw out something completely different to what this thread seems to have speculated for Solas, and suggest that he might be Patrick Weekes' second character. He did tweet about writing an elf, and unless I'm mixing writers up.... I THINK he and Mary Kirby tweeted about two of their characters definitely NOT getting along (unless it was Sheryl and Partick that tweeted this). While that could mean Iron Bull (because I still believe Patrick wrote him), it might actually mean Vivienne and Solas, because I could totally see those two having a lot of differences only starting with Solas' choice in wardrobe.

You could be right, especially since we know Viv is pro-circle and Solas is an apostate.
Though I digress, I don't know what "apostate" would really mean after the annulment of the Nevarran Accord.

I think there's definitely going to be some discord between Vivienne and Solas. About a lot of things.
She's pretty pro-circle
He's an apostate
This'll get interesting.
The mages in our parties never really got along.
Morrigan vs Wayne
Anders vs Merrill
Watch cullen butt in to keep the peace lol.

CULLEN: Look, I know it isn't my place, but as a Templar--
VIVIENNE: As a Templar you should know that disputes of a political nature are dealt with by the mages themselves.
CULLEN: But--
SOLAS: The Inquisitor told me you would have no sway over me, Knight-Commander. Do not interfere.
VIVIENNE: Indeed.
CULLEN: You two are throwing fireballs all over the camp!

Ha! Zathrien was a bald apostate, too, wasn't he?
Maybe that's why I (subconsciously) did that.

This kind of banter makes me so happy.

Regarding Cole, I find it hard to imagine how he'd work as a party member. I was totally on board with him being a companion for most of Asunder - I could see my Inquisitor being very wary at first but eventually bonding with him and wanting to help him - but then I got to the epilogue. Neat character, good story, I still like Cole... but I guess I don't really see a natural way to segue from there to him being one of the Inquisitor's squadmates. I'd like to have him in the game, but I honestly think he'd work better as an NPC than a companion.

Good point. I sorta remember an elf thing too, altho I think it didn't specify follower or not. Totally could be.

I hope Solas isn't an LI, as if he is, I'd miss out on him because of gender. And it seems I may well like him more than Vivienne.

Now that we can intervene in banter, I want "Both of you will kiss and make up now, or so help me Maker, I will turn this misfit group around." as a response to bickering companions.
That would be glorious. ![]()

Now, for a bit of rain on the parade (because I live to create realistic expectations):
Did anyone notice that, in the War Room image, it looks like Leliana, Scribe Girl, and Maybe!Cullen are all wearing the same colors? Now, it could just be that they all have close ties to the Chantry, or simply the artist rather liked those colors, but the pessimist in me says that Leliana and Scribe Girl are (more than likely) both NPC's, and if M!Cullen is wearing the same colors as them, that makes me think uniform. Which makes me think they're all NPC's.
That being said, I'm still in the camp that Flaily Hands is the important NPC and Cullen is the companion, but I like to temper my enthusiasm by dousing it with water from time to time. Thoughts?

It is very important to hope for the best but be prepared for the possibility that the devs just didn't feel he would work as a companion. Saying that, I'mma get my analyse hat on and take a look at this war room image again. I've had fun doing this the last couple of times, so here we go again. ![]()
While the colours these three characters are wearing are within the same half of the colour wheel -- all cool colours within the blue to purple spectrum -- I don't see anything about them that would make them uniform-esque. Scribe Girl is basically wearing what she is in the survey leak and the other concept piece she was in, which appears to be a deep royal blue. Leliana's clothes and hood are actually rather interesting here, because they are the most uniform-esque to me. Her colours and the obvious cowl make me want to connect her to that Purple Crows idea that was in that one supposed leak, as there is a definite espionage feel to her wardrobe choice and she is no longer in that seeker armour we saw her in at the end of DAII. She isn't in what she was wearing in that one concept art of the lady Inquisitor being named the inquisitor, either.
(Varric is also wearing what looks to be a purple scarf. I just want to point that out because I find it adorable.
)
Now, our maybe!Cullen. He doesn't look like he's in his full character armour, to be honest. Out of everyone here, he is in what appears to be the simplest clothes with a simple cool greyish colour scheme, and it reminds me of that one armour concept we saw that showed armour layering and the like with Solas' model. I'm not about to call this 'proof' that Cullen has an even stronger potential of being a companion or anything like that, but it does look like the character here is wearing an 'early armour choice' and is sort of dressed down compared to most of the others in the room. Cassandra is also wearing something quite simple compared to the armour we've seen her in, so perhaps another early armour choice?
Also all the characters here are purposely muted to draw the eye around the room, with the Inquisitor as the main focus leading out to Cassandra and Varric and their argument. Where your eye lands next could, admittedly, involve a bit of character bias but maybe!Cullen certainly sticks out in how he's taking up that one space. The other characters are stationed around the image and the sides of the room, their gestures self contained and focused on the 'self', but maybe!Cullen is stepping into that vacant space and reaching towards the inquisitor which makes him a much more active participant and one of the few characters, other than the Inquisitor, Cassandra and Varric, who's gesture does not involve the self but instead the people in front of him.
That likely says more about the character's personality than his potential as a companion, but it does show that he's more invested in the Inquisitor as a person than the other characters appear to be. He's showing concern for the Inquisitor's loss in temper. And what more would you want from a companion than personal investment in the character you're playing?
(And holy balls, I edited this so many times. orz)

Hold on, side note, but did anyone look on the War Room map, and see where the Inquisition had placed markers? The one in Ferelden looked pretty damn close to Kinloch Hold.

Look what I got yesterday. A new baby nephew. Isn't he the BEST baby in the world? If praying is your thing we wouldn't mind some extras, he's having a bit of trouble transitioning and will have to stay in the hospital a few days to make sure he's good. (Had a bit of a fever yesterday). But still, isn't he presh???? His name is Maddox Odin.

My brother wanted to name him Odin without the Maddox, but Amber (his partner) wasn't having any of that. So they compromised. I didn't like Odin at first but I think it works.

The thing that made me contemplate it being a uniform was, well, first the similar colors, but then I saw how the yellow(ish) bits sort of matched on M!Cullen and Leliana. Scribe Girl really is only tangentially related, and that’s completely a color-based thing, which, admittedly, is pretty slim on the evidence but I thought it was worth mentioning.
The armor is a great point! (And makes me think this meeting happened in the middle of M!Cullen getting dressed, so he had to rush down here before they killed each other.
) And it sent my mind tumbling down another line of thoughts, so, bare with me.
We know (or can assume) that the elf in the back is Solas, and thus he wouldn’t need any armor-ish bits because, well, mage. M!Cullen, Cassandra, and the Inquisitor are the most armored people there. Varric can be excused because he is a rogue. So unless Flaily is a rogue (mage is unlikely) he is distinctly adorned in fancy materials, and doesn’t look suited for a combat position, much like Scribe Girl. Even Leliana kinda looks underdressed for battle. (That said, Leliana is kick-ass and has no need for silly leather armor pfft.)
Your point about positions is very interesting. Looking at the image again, the two that seem distressed about what is going on are Flaily and Scribe Girl. Solas, Leliana and Cullen are invested, but not freaking out. The people at the table are a mess, though, so.
It makes me wonder if Flaily is a political adviser of sorts, if he’s an NPC.
Of course we could (and probably are) putting far more thought into this than necessary, but it’s fun!
