He does something very surprising.
Except I don't think it's all that surprising given the basic premise that he's a *good man* who's been through some horrible stuff. 
I should add that I mean about advocating leniency to the three mages. (I assume that's what you meant by "surprising"? If not, I retract everything. )

Well, it's surprising for anyone that hasn't played the pro-templar part of the game, lol. I mean, he's a good man but I hadn't expected him to stick up for the 3 mages like that.
I do love how he seems genuinely surprised to be asked his opinion when Hawke asks to hear what he thinks they should do.

My god, I couldn't even make it past two minutes. Meredith is insane. Soldiers ramming their swords into armor-less mages who are clearly taking up a defensive position... geez!

Aggro suits her; sarcastic and diplo suit him. Obviously Sarcastic M!Hawke is the best of the best, but my canon is a diplo, so I gotta show the boy some love.
Aggro M!Hawke sounds like he eats babies for breakfast.

It was super harsh. I know they wanted to show us the extremes on both sides, but I felt that even the extreme mages all had good reasons for doing what they were doing, even if their methods were sometimes completely bat sh!t insane, lol.
The pro-Templar side of things made you do some horrible things if you wanted to become Viscount. The Templars definitely came out of it looking far worse, despite the devs saying that both sides were supposed to be as bad as each other in Kirkwall.

me neither, it's like he's been punched in the gut.
yeah, that's too much for me. it was almost too much to watch. i like sum aggro dialogue in things just to spice it up---when appropriate, but dayum...i can't do that. not even for pretend.

It's awful, but it's good to see him react that way. They could've had him stand there stone faced and not react at all or not give an option for him to speak his mind and try to protect them.
