Would they really have you lose a companion just because you pick a specialization? It'd better have some damned substantial perks as well... but then, it'd fit the risk/reward of the practice in the lore as well. So maybe it'd all work out if they did it that way.
Maybe? I guess it would depend on how important that companion is to the story.

Wouldn't that mean that Cullen wasn't that important?
Probably lol. I would presume if he was important then we wouldn't be able to get rid of him at all lol. Kinda like how you could be really nasty to Alistair all the way through DA:O but he'd never leave the Warden because he was the plot heavy companion... Not that I was ever horrible to him, I didn't have the heart to and he's my Warden's lover lol.

Besides, I suspect it'll be Cassandra that's the plot heavy one if anything.

So, which would you prefer: his being important or his leaving if you're a blood mage?
If I could dictate to David Gaider who the companion's would be and which of those would be the important one, then obviously I would choose Cullen.
That being said, he should react badly if you play a blood Mage. But of course I wouldn't pick blood magic if that was the case lol, so it would be in my best interest to keep him and have him as the important companion. However, this game isn't going to be about what I want, so I'd hope that the DA team could strike some sort of balance so that everyone can get what they want.

I wouldn't be surprised if you were in a relationship with him and he broke up with you for being a blood mage. It was something DG admitted was a problem with both Anders' and Fenris' relationships in DAII.

Fair enough. I rather like blood magic, so... hopefully no one will leave altogether because of that, but I think I could stand it.LolaLei wrote...

I'm definitely interested to see how people will react to it. I'd definitely try it out and then see what Cullen's reaction would be, it's gotta be done out of curiosity if nothing else.
Of course, Cullen isn't actually all that good at Templaring, is he? He may not even notice.
JK, they'd never do that in the next game after they took so much crap for it in the second one.

I wonder if he could bring himself to kill you for it if you're at the stage in the romance where he's declared his undying love for you?

I'd also hope that when Cullen did confront you about using blood magic, he'd totally freak out and scream at you about it. After all he's been through it's only right that his reaction should be big and dramatic, especially if you're romancing him.

Or after the shouting (which I totally agree on, BTW) - if he were to calm down, stiffen his back and very coldly start with the "Blood mage. The order dictates...."

... Man, I'd have to try that out just for that scene alone!

Omg that would be even harsher! The very idea of him going from tender and loving, to screaming profanities at you and making you feel bad with the whole "I thought you loved me?" thing, to going Icey cold with you, referring to you only as "Blood Mage" and "abomination "
... Man, I'd have to try that out just for that scene alone!
Ugh, it would be awful (but I'd totally try it just for kicks).
Wonder if they'd let you use a high persuade skill to get out of that one? Or even a special *mind domination* option?
I don't think I could do it. Control someone's mind, I mean. On something small like "the boy doesn't have to pay for the apple" maybe, but not "you approve of blood magic, oh yes you do!"

Perhaps by that point he'd be able to get past the blood magic thing? Honestly, it'd seem to be a little strange for your party to start freaking out about it now when it hadn't done so in the past two games.
True but Cullen was oblivious in DA2, plus he does mention his distaste for blood mages a few times in the game when talking about his torture in DA:O, it would make sense for him to freak out.

I agree that it seems like strange thing to retcon if they weren't going to show others' reactions from day one, but that's the way the wind is blowing.
If Cullen isn't in your party, you honestly may not have anyone in there that cares. Especially since we got a double dose of "Blood magic? Oh no." from two of our companions in the last game.
The only time I can remember a companion reacting to blood magic is if you make Anders a blood mage in Awakening - he'll talk about how bad it is and when you point out that he is one he'll just stammer something like he's embarassed.

It makes me wonder how the PC would learn blood magic. I suspect that Hawke can have it taught easily enough by Merrill.
Maybe during an encounter with a shady group of them? If you let them go or help them then they teach you? Would be cool to just start out as one, as an origin or something.

Hopefully it wouldn't be directly through a demon. Even most people who are really excited about the blood mage specialization seem to not be gung-ho about hanging out with demons. Though DG's been talking about making blood magic seem more morally dubious than ever before, so who knows? But if I roll a blood mage I'd like to skip past the demon. They generally kind of annoy me.
