Okay, sorry this topic has been so disjointed; I'm having to post between things at work
1. So if we think the various origins exist whether we play them or not, should we assume that at least one of those is a female Surana or Amell; thus Cullen's infatuation is canon?
2. Regardless as to whether or not it's canon -- do you think it matters? Is it important? I mean, I guess... would we find him as compelling if we didn't know he had a shy, stuttering crush on someone (male or female... lets assume for the sake of example that he could canonically be infatuated with male Surana or Amell, too) in his early years?
I ask because I'm undecided. Yes, I think Cullen's changing spiritual and political beliefs are fascinating, and it's chiefly what draws me to the character. But aside from that, just as a person, I do find his early shyness interesting... and I find it charming that he retains that shyness into adulthood and the beginnings of middle age.
Does that general shyness translate to actual lack of experience in bed? I don't know and I honestly don't care. I hope it isn't brought up at all. One thing I'm sure of is that I don't think his virginity or lack of virginity contributes to his character at all. (As opposed to, say, Fenris, admitting that he hasn't let anyone get too close before Hawke. It's important for Fenris' story and character.)
I adore that scene when we encounter him for the first time in DA2, simply because when you see that scene for the very first time your instant reaction is like "wtf?! Leave that man alone, you massive jerk!" Cullen comes off as a real arsehole that can clearly handle himself in a fight like a big manly man, but then suddenly Wilmod transforms and you see another side to Cullen, he looks genuinely terrified and shocked. Then you see a third side to him after they kill Wilmod and we see that Cullen was actually the good guy in that particular situation and witness his professional side, even finding out that he put his own life in danger to confront Wilmod to protect his recruits. Then you see a 4th side where his professionalism slips a little whilst talking about the "young ladies" of the Blooming Rose, and you realise that although he's a very capable and skilled warrior, he's still got that flustered boyish and completely unintentional charm to him.
To join this conversation late, I think the high-amplitude emotional drama of the oscillation from adorable "You can talk to me any time you like"!Cullen to unhinged "KILL THEM ALL"!Cullen to sad "A great battle awaits you, does it not"!Cullen to angry professional "I WILL HAVE THE TRUTH FROM YOU AND I WILL HAVE IT NOW"!Cullen is a pretty big part of why I initially found him interesting, at least. And then after all that he looks at his boots and says "...young ladies" and I'm practically yelling at the screen "OMFG, HE'S STILL IN THERE SOMEWHERE!!!"
But the rest of his character development in DA2 is why he continues to hold my interest, and the mage crush is pretty irrelevant to that.
Also, for any other new people wondering about R2, Gaider and the pitchforks, I believe this is it: http://social.biowar...ndex/14916663/6
