Sigh. I wish I were suddenly rich and could cancel all my classes and fly to wherever PAX is being held.

People do recover from addiction
I want to meet Cullen after that point
I kinda agree with you on this one, while it would be interesting to have a story like that, (with an addict) I think it would be a bit of a too much pain in the arse to deal with and I think it would just be frustrating, Like with Anders for example I got that h suffered in the past with the tamplars and all but it was kind of annoying seeing him depressed ALLL the time.. I just wanted him to be happy but could t never reach that so Id say that non addicted Cullen would be better

But I think part of the lyrium thing is that it's permanent. It's not like after you give up a real life substance your body recovers over time. All the damage would be to the brain and the mind, which is much harder to repair. People who have used LSD can still suffer flashbacks years later.

I didn't know that. Okay, well, let's just keep the guy on a steady supply then ![]()

I actually have PTSD and I guess I just appreciate the whole "intimate psychotherapy" trope being used on a male instead a female character for once. They pulled the same thing in ME3 with Jack. I'm all for equal opportunity.
I also "have" PTSD (I'm fairly uncomfortable labeling my issues with it, but that's the term, I suppose.), and while that is nice, I suppose, I'm a little squicky whenever people offer to "cure it" with sex/love. As you know, it's not that simple. I think that's what makes people uncomfortable.
As for addressing it with Cullen, I think it's actually a fairly often overlooked facet of his character. Given that, by his own words, what went on in the Tower in Ferelden went on for weeks or months. Imagine that, for a moment. That he is able to still be a good man at all is a testament to his strength, and *that* is one of the reasons I'd like the chance to get to know him better.
To address the Lyrium addiction-I'd like it to be addressed, in some way. At this point, if they don't address it, at least a little, it'll become the big elephant in the room, so to speak.
As you all know, there are just so very many places they could take Cullen, and this makes me both excited and terrified for his inclusion. Now I'm going to stop rambling and play my newly minted Tabris-at least let me get her out of Ostagar. ![]()

Yep. Look at Samson. Do we even know if it's possible to kick the habit entirely? Is there lyrium detox? ![]()

Hah, but at the same time, it's probably reinforcing his nightmares and PTSD

Aw man. I just realized that it's possible that none of my favorite Dragon Age romances will live happily until old age.
My Warden will go to his Calling, Anders (possibly) will go to his Calling, and Cullen (possibly) will go mad from lyrium addiction.
That is... unfortunate. [SIGH] But they're my favorites despite that, so.

This is probably why I really don't want to romance him as a mage. It's quite clearly something that can't be fixed with magical genitals, and if the romance implies that in any way, I will feel very uncomfortable. Obviously, it may still hinted at with a non-mage Inquisitor, but the mage thing will just augment that I feel/fear. Also, it's not like he's still extremely anti-mage. I think that for a Templar, he's got a healthy balance of fear and sympathy, all things considered.
Oh and excellent choice of origin, Bramblefae.

I don't know! I wish I did. Can it be done and if so, then how? I want those answers. And what if you could actually CURE him with blood magic, like boom! done!, but he doesn't want that for obvious reasons? How do you handle it? See, it's something I've thought about a lot. I know it's not likely to be addressed to that extent. I just wanted to see what you guys thought. I see the point of those who don't want it. It could def be a real bummer and sap the fun out of the game. Even I would not want that.

With Samson, isn't it implied he's still using it whenever he can get his hands on it because the withdrawal symptoms are so bad? Or am I imagining things again.

That sounds about right. Honestly, we just need more information. All of it. And I think we'll get it in the next game, if only for a comparison between Red Templars with Red Lyrium and your average Templar.
If only we knew of a Templar who could help us out with that information!

Nope, once you are on the stuff, you are hooked. There is no way to stop the addiction at all. You can't wean yourself off of it either. Period. Samson was addicted to lyrium dust.

"magical genitals" made me snort. Be a great band name, too. I agree about the Mage thing. I don't think I would have any desire to romance Cullen as a mage (Although I get where people would. The feels, man.).
Hubby and I played through the Origin itself simultaneously-he as a male Tabris, me as female, so we could see exactly how the story differs.
Was pretty fun. ![]()

I also was diagnosed with PTSD, even though I don't like to label it that way. I'm a military wife and I know soldiers come back with PTSD and they have gone through worse things that I ever have.
Anyway, my doctor always says "You need to talk to your husband, it'll help your process." The thing is though, he knows everything about me, why I am the way I am and there are things that love/sex can't help you through, there are things that you have to deal with yourself.

I prefer it with a female. The threat just seems more personal. Also, it feels more satisfying when you cut off Vaughan's head.

I want to romance Cullen with a Dalish mage. (That is the only option for elf mages, right?) I think the dialogue between a Templar and mage who had never been in the circle would be fascinating. So, I guess Solas might work for that, too. ![]()

Blah, I hope it doesn't imply that. Trying to think critically about why I want to romance him with a mage, I think it's just that I got so attached to my mage Warden, and how (because of her being a mage) her heart got squashed first by [external circumstances relating to] Cullen and then again by Alistair. I'd just like something good romantically to happen for my mage PC. (Hawke was a warrior, I wasn't into Anders or the ladies enough to replay DA2 just for that, and I've heard the Fenris romance is weird and uncomfortable if Hawke's a mage.) I almost feel like I'd be jealous for her if he ended up with a member of the comparatively empowered/privileged non-magical majority? Especially because then maybe he'd mentally be retaining the idea somewhere in his subconscious that mages are colleagues/charges, maybe even friends in special circumstances, but never loves.

Presumably. I have wanted to play as a Dalish mage for a while now actually. But still, first and canon Inquisitor shall be a rogue. (And it's not just because my insanity demands I have a full set for once)

Oh yeah, the culture shock would be an interesting thing to explore. I am skeptical of how this will affect things however. I'm thinking the magic thing may take precedence over the ear thing.

Maybe there's some way to refine or chemically alter the red lyrium so that it can be used safely, without driving people mad. Maybe you can make an even purer version of lyrium that templars can become un-addicted to the regular stuff, and then ease off the refined stuff so that they are permanently off of it.
Hey, they do it with drug addicts, so why not.
