Ok , LolaLei.
Thanks for the information. :)

I'm gonna check your post.
I knew nobody could resist you , my "let's dress you up as a cupcakes and send you to bioware" idea doesn't seems so bad now :P

Maybe it's all a big surprise with a lot of teasing, hmm?
Cully is too adorable to not to be a companion!

A pretty face isn't enough. Writing makes the character. I realize that devs have opinions just like everyone else, but most are professional enough to keep whatever biases they hold off the forums. A character like Cullen takes a lot of subtlety to do well. Without it, it might be better if he wasn't in the game at all.

Don't let me dampen your spirits, though! News is news, right?

So anyway, about Cullen.

Hypothetically, if he's a companion or in DA3 at all, what do you think motivated him to come to Orlais?

I think one possibility is that all Templars who remained loyal to the Chantry and didn't revolt and branch off, were called to Orlais. It's probable the Divine and the Chantry want to regain control of the mage/templar rebellion. I can see Cullen not following his peers to slaughter mages. He's always been pretty strong in his faith and I think after what he said in Act 3 of DAII; it would be more in character to keep with his faith. And his faith doesn't dictate that all mages must die. We know he believes differently than that. After the the Order splintered, I can see how Cullen would either travel to Orlais to offer to help in any way he can, to serve the Maker and do his duty. I can also see the Divine sending out missives for all knights to return to Orlais immediately so they can plan how to stop the mage and templars. The reason the Divine has for doing this can be petty power or something more Big Picture; like a rampant war between mages and templars will sunder the Veil and destroy the world.

At least, that's my theory. I like it best because it's also a story arc that can apply to the new PC and put him/her on the same path as Cullen and many other characters... but mostly Cullen. :D

Ooooo I like that! It seems like the most likely plot as well. I wonder if Cullen was at that meeting Lambert held in Asunder (that was Lambert right?) I'd like to think he was one of the people who spoke up for the mages.

I still need to read Asunder. Being broke sucks. But if DA3 is about the mage/templar war - as it was said it would be way back when - then that is a possible storyline. I wish I could find a source to cite, but I do recall when talk of DA3 first began, someone said that the mage/templar conflict was going to be dealt with. There was also mention of the new game dealing with keeping the world from destroying itself.  Again, I can't cite anything because I don't save these bits of info, I just read them. I'm abad fan... <_< But unless there's all out war everywhere, like the Qunari finally invade Thedas and the Tevinter try to retake Kirkwall and Orlais goes gunning for Ferelden while and - who knows - maybe Rivain takes a jab at Antiva! :D I don't know. But protecting the world from destroying itself in this way doesn't seem likely, unless everyone is being played to want to attack someone else. The Qunari could be trying to gain control of all mages, because they fear magic, by conquering everything. Or maybe Tevinter decides it's time to help their mage brethren in Kirkwall and invades. The mage/templar conflict can potentially drag other countries into the fray but not without help, in my opinion. So there's either a bigger malevolent entity at work behind the scenes  or the threat of such war between mages and templars is much bigger than simply fighting and dying.

I don't see what her opinions on Anders would have to do with whether Cullen's character would be written well or not (if she even wrote that script for Cullen, there's no proof, it was just me speculating and trying to make conversation flow in here.)

Hmm, berelinde, I'm afraid I'm puzzled, too. I don't believe Tonia shared any news, to be honest (no offense!). She just dropped by to correct Lola about her Anders romance. LOL The VO session speculation was all us (well, Lola!).

Of course... we would LOVE news!! hint hint wink wink!:wub:

Oh, that isn't my opinion on Anders. That's my character's opinion. If I played as myself I would have probably painted my face half blue and mooned the templars since my personal beliefs are very western and very liberal. Freedom for all! And so forth.

I agree with your point that a character needs to be done well or not at all but we have no idea how the writer for Cullen is going to do until we see it. That's just the way it goes. On the whole I'm happy with the characters, I just wish they had more nuance but I chalk the lack of it up to time.

As for the devs professionalism, I've seen nothing contrary to that. But devs are people too. They're gamers too. I don't think Anders' death was written in because his character was disliked by the devs. I think it was written in because it seemed a natural consequence of his actions and thus it gives the player a chance to be forgiving or not. It's all about how the person holding the controller wants to play.

I might question how pro-mage one could be if one was against Anders... but I suppose anyone who'll still fight the templars is useful enough in the battle, yes?

The reason my Hawke killed Anders in the end is that he put her sister, and every other mage in Kirkwall, in danger. My rogue  took responsibility for Anders, and ended him right there. That's how I role-played it, anyhow.

Thanks for dropping in and giving us some of your time, Tonia! This is history-making. Posted Image
Don't mind some of the posters here. Things have a tendancy to get kind of negative lately. I blame the President.

So since you're dropping in, can we infer that you're a Cullen fan yourself, or at least someone who finds his character interesting? Do you have a favorite Cullen scene or fan art?  Posted Image

Thanks for all your hard work on The Next Thing - you're making something that we know we're going to love so we'll always be big fans of yours for that!

Anyway , judging somebody's work before seeing the work ...

It's cool they're some fresh blood on the writing team , besides a lot of the writers don't even come to the forum anymore and retreat in Twitter ( I don't like twitter :s ) , so let's not scare them away from the forum .
