For me, I think it might have to do with the fact that while I'm reading the dialogue and dialogue choices, or watching cutscenes, I have my own thoughts that I think as if I was the Warden telling that to, let's say Jowan after the Harrowing:

Jowan: I shouldn't waste your time with this. I was supposed to tell you to see Irving as soon as you woke up.
Me: You already have wasted enough of my time. Why didn't you tell me right away to see Irving?

Jasmine96: I always felt Hawke's motivations were kinda selfish, he/she was essentially working towards climbing the social ladder but got thrown into a political **** storm in the process, where as the Warden's motivations were always for the good of everyone else.

Dunquixote: It's weird, both male and female Shepard have voice actors and I felt really attached to them, I was absolutely devastated by those endings and the thought that my female Shepard had been seperated from her crew and Kaidan who she had stayed faithful to and waited for since ME1. Yet I wasn't attached to Hawke, maybe that's because we only played as him/her for one game rather than three? But then, we only played as the Warden for one game and I love her and the DA:O companions to bits.

I wonder what it is about DA2 that stops some of us feeling as attached to them as we do with the protagonists and companions in the other games? (Excluding Cullen of course lol.)

Agree with this completely, I think I was more attached to the warden because I was able to shape her more like myself. I was able to imagine my own personality for her rather than it being given like with hawke

Do you suppose that, aside from the weird dialogue choices given by Hawke, the reason some of us didn't gel with the Hawke and his/her companions was because we weren't able to explore their personalities or bond with them as much as we could with the companions in DA:O?

Supposedly the companions in DA2 had more dialogue etc than DA:O, yet everything felt much more indepth and emotional in the first game.

Really? It felt like alot less, maybe because most of their dialogue was during their quests. Usually when they talked to us they were asking for something rather than just talking

Yep, but it felt more like you could only ever talk to them when they needed something from you, under their terms. You couldn't just pop in for a chat and they never really told you much about their personal life aside from the big issue bothering them, I mean I know Anders hates the mistreatment of Mages, and I know Isabela likes sex but what else makes them tick? Where were the cute or sad stories about their lives growing up? What do they like to do for fun? What have they been up to since we last spoke? What are their thoughts on the current mission? Etc.

I felt the party banter severely lacked in DA2 as well. Their were a couple of really funny ones but in general most of it was pretty mundane or out right annoying, especially the bickering between Anders and Fenris... It would have been fine if it was general disagreements but it was always about the sodding mages and slaves between those two. I think the closest I ever felt to Hawke and the DA2 companions was during MotA, that dlc felt more like something out of DA:O and was actually very light hearted and funny banter wise, hell even Fenris and Anders were quite cheerful throughout the whole thing!

I don't know about everyone else but I would of Loved to see Anders and Fenris become friends by the end. I mean they're so similar and I thought that would of been such a great addition to the story. Anwho, I agree they always talked about the same thing, Anders with mages, Fenris about being a slave, and Merril once she showed you that mirror. In dao we got to learn about all of our companions upbringings and their past, Alistair with his mother dying and life in redcliffe, Lelianna when she talked about Val something (can't spell it) and lady something(again can't spell it) who raised her, Morrigan and her trips out of the wilds and Flemeth, Zevran with his mother, Raina and how he became a crow. Anyway you get my point.

We just got so much more of their backstory. Fenris is an exception since he doesn't remember, but we hardly get anything on the other companions. Isabela brings up some of it if you're in a romance with her but I didn't realize that for half of the times I played, and I don't romance her on most characters I have anyway so I hardly get to see it.

I miss friendships being as deep as romances too. In dao I felt like my friendship with Morrigan was just as meaningful as when I created a warden who romanced her, saem goes for Lelianna and Alisatir and Zevran

That was another thing, the romances and friendships were severely lacking.

In DA:O you got to know them as acquaintances first, then as friends, and the more you talked to them the more they'd reveal about themselves until the friendship either grew into a deep close friendship or brotherly/sisterly love or you could start to playfully flirt and joke around until you decide to pursue them romantically and if you didn't make the first move then they'd approach you and try to initate the relationship themselves, and that was spread evenly throughout the course of the whole game. In DA2 however, it felt more like a flirt/flirt/kiss/shag/kiss event, there was no depth to it, no emotion.

If you screwed Alistair over at the Landsmeet and you were close friends or in a relationship with him, his reaction is absolutely heart breaking, in ME3 if you screw Wrex over the scene is absolutely gut wrenchingly sad, yet when you discover Anders has blown up the Chantry killing hundreds of innocent people and you decide to stab him it's like:

"I'm going to have to kill you now Anders" *stab* "Hm, that was easy... Oh well! Lets go kick some arse!" - You'd think they would have put some real effort into that scene, especially if Hawke was in a relationship with him, it should have been emotionally distressing and poignant, not half arsed.

I didn't like the rivalry/friendship system in DA II; though I admit it was more challenging to gain either reputation in DAII than it is in DAO. It was too easy in DAO-- with feastday pranks and without. I let loghain live with my dwarf noble rogue and made him marry anora. When he arrived in Vigil's Keep, he acted pretty sullen and almost disappointed she wasn't dead (in Awakening). I found that amusing.

As for party banters, I didn't find a single one in DA II that funny, though I think Varric had a few decent ones.

Agree completely, especially about the Anders thing. Speaking of endings, in da2 I thought the speeches at the end were really lacking comparing to the first, I don't think it was the actual speeches, maybe it was just how it was set up of you having to apporach them rather than them coming up to you, maybe it was because the battle wasn't as epic, maybe it was the lack of music. Now that I think about it it was probably the lack of music, the music playing in the background during the goodbyes in origins was so epic, it really brought emotion to the scene. In DA2 I heard crickets chirping. All I know is that the DAO goodbyes about brought me to tears, while in DA2 I think I yawned.

And in a lot of fan fics as well!
Seriously, if they do want DA2 characters to have a cameo, let Anders and Fenris show up as being friends (as long as both were alive at the end of 2).

Here's another two questions for you all:

1) What will your reaction be if DA3's romantic story arcs are crap? They finally give us Cullen and his physical appearance is even hotter than it was in DA2 but the relationship plays out the same or worse than DA2, leaving the whole thing feeling rushed and/or lackluster with a rubbish fully clothed dry humping/fade to black sex scene. We get little to no option to learn about his past and he spends the entire game being a miserable, irritating bugger talking about how he hates Mages every opportunity.

2) If they approach Cullen's romance the same way they did Sebastian's where you can get into a relationship with him but you get no option to kiss or shag him and he tells you the relationship would be a chasted one. What do you think your reaction would be? Would you be royally pissed off, even if they handle the situation sensitively?

Actually, I wouldn't be too pissed (oh, so I'm not the only one disappointed with the fading in black scene when hawke supposedly does it with anders?); but yeah, I would be disappointed.  I mean, I can't say the DAO  sex scenes impressed me that much (I mostly hated the corny music) --oh, I did like seeing Zevran's very last action in the human sex scene with him, but I did grow to like it in an unexplainable way i guess.

When I first played DA2 and I got to the goodbye scenes, I didn't even realise I was at the end of the game. I thought he was just giving them a friendly pep talk. So when the action kicked in I was like "Sweet! At last things finally get interesting!" and then all of a sudden the cut scene kicks in and the credits roll and I was really confused LOL.

lmao 'dry humping' I would love it if they could give us scenes like the mass effect romance ones I've seen on youtube. Anyway if they did that I think he would end up being just like fenris right? I would be really dissapointed as for my reaction I have no idea. I could end up hanging from some sky scraper in my underwear to protest the romance. But that's very unlikely. At the most I might just write a strongly worded letter but I trust them to improve upon the romances, or at least that's what I'm hoping for
As for if he became chaste I will murder knife the person who made the decision, kidding.. kidding
I would be pretty dissapointed with either though

The only fanfics I've ever found about Fenris and Anders are about them having some secret affair or something lol, I would love if they show up as friends, though I imagine the player would be like what the hell? since we never got to see them progress to that.. if only

If you want me to PM you some fic recs, let me know.  The authors are really good at showing how a friendship could start and follow it all the way until they are true friends. <3

Awe thankyou! :) Only if you happen to come across any that you want to share, I don't wan't you to have to go out of your way or anything. I might go look on fanfiction once I log off

Would you be royally pissed off, even if they handle the situation sensitively?

lmao 'dry humping' I would love it if they could give us scenes like the mass effect romance ones I've seen on youtube.

LMAO! Best. Reaction. Ever!

Lol, same here! The whole time I thought the game was going to end with Hawke meeting Cassandra and going on some epic battle thing, so I got really excited when Cassandra walked out of the house and then it ended..

LOL While I'm at I'll put on a giant monkey suit and climb up the building with an action figure Cullen in my hand
