I always took it as a torture technique re: Keran. Being offered water or food... and you know how "kids" are always a bit rebellious. Especially boys. Sometimes they need to be shown why there are rules before they'll actually accept and follow them. That would leave them open to influences that are not always good.SamaraDraven wrote...

Perhaps that's it. Wilmod was, as Cullen put it, "Not convinced of the Order's rules." But Keran was devout, according to his sister. Maybe the recruits aren't taking lyrium yet but they know it's coming and Tarohne used that to trick the recruits into believing they wouldn't need lyrium to be great knights? Keran said he never took anything they offered. Maybe that was it? Or it could have been old fashioned torture and they were trying to break him?
