Another thing she mentions is that they had no idea if there was even going to be a DA II when they were working on Origins, considering they didn't know how well it was going to catch on. Once they were cleared for a sequel, they pretty much got to start from a clear slate, and picking parts that they found most interesting from the first game.
Taking that into account, I have to believe they for sure knew where they were planning to take this story well into the next game. I would easily bet that they been dropping hints all throughout the second game. It also shows that they look at things (and characters hopefully) from past games that really make an impact on the community and players, then bring them into the next story. It not only makes a connection for past players, but gives new players a chance to experience events and characters that are already proven memorable and popular.
Agreed. I think that once they got the go ahead for DA2 they realised that the Dragon Age franchise could go the distance in terms of storyline. I definitely think they made the right choice in giving us a different protagonist for every new game they bring out. So I guess by the time they had started DA2 they had worked out where they wanted the story to go for (at least) the following game. DA2 certainly felt like the plot set up to the third game in terms of storyline and it certainly seems to be going somewhere big.
Well, again according to Hepler,
"The writers begin by designing a story, with space for combat and interesting challenges. This is refined by our technical designers to suit the gameplay needs. Once they approve, the writers begin work on the dialogue. When this is complete, the tech designers implement the plot..."
So they probably had an idea of the general direction they wanted to go in at the start of creating the story of Hawke and where it would end, then they expanded upon it in more detail once they started the next project.
A lot of the time, I get frustrated with the end of DA II because I feel like the game was all some big prologue. I was really left with a lot more questions than I had when I started. Don't get me wrong, I love the Dragon Age franchise and I did enjoy DA II, but there's still that part of me that's like "WTF? I'm more confused now!"

They must have had an idea with pretty much the entire game being one long setup for the next, ya know? But I'm getting off topic...I'm gonna shut up and start Photoshopping me a banner
