Oooh! Shirtless Cullen! And Anders doing something strange with his hand. Added coolness!

So, the sister I introduced to DA2 completed her first playthrough as a rogue and is now in Act 3 with her second Hawke, a warrior. I still had to do the Arishok battle for her (she had not won the respect of the Arishok in any way, shape, or form because she somehow imagined that fighting a roomful of qunari plus the Arishok with an under-geared 2-hander with no active talents besides Mighty Blow and Scythe would be easier than facing the Arishok in single combat). I have not yet recruited her to the Cullen fan club, but I'm hoping that her interest in him will improve next game when she tries a mage.

Awesome! You'll have to get her to try out DA:O, I wonder who she'd romance.

Baby steps for sis. Too much of the awesome button can hurt a new recruit! lol Who did she romance?

I'm not sure, honestly. I could see her playing a male Warden and romancing Morrigan. She doesn't seem the Alistair type... but then again, I didn't think she'd like Anders, either, and she adores him.

I haven't introduced her to DA:O yet because I'm afraid that the controls and the skill selections would overwhelm her. DA2 is the first video game she has ever played. The three of us (she, my brother, and I) used to play DnD together when we were teenagers, but that was a long time ago. She doesn't really understand things like DPS, crit chance, or the importance of deepening one's stamina pool, and she is only just now learning the value of kiting.

I'm going to keep working on her on the Cullen front, though. So far, she has been too focused on the game mechanics to pay much attention to the story, but once she learns to talk to bystanders and scenery NPCs, I'm sure she'll come around.

Yeah, it takes a few playthroughs to really notice all the background ambience and NPC's etc.

You aren't kidding!

She romanced Anders on both of her playthroughs, but she has yet to get anybody to 100%. She's planning on rivalmancing Fenris next time (we are planning parallel playthroughs), so she really, really needs to work the approval system. I've shown her the wiki (she didn't know it existed), so that may help her with the whole approval thing. Plus, if we're playing through together, I can usually get Fenris up to 50% rival by the end of Act 1. I've been trying to complete a romance with Fenris since my second playthrough, so maybe this will be the incentive I need to avoid flirting with Anders.

It's fun watching her play. My Hawkes tend toward diplo or snarky, but she goes for the snarky/aggressive responses.

In reply to an earlier post, I took the survey and put down that my interest in the social aspect of gaming is pretty much limited to visiting the forums to talk about my favorite characters and quests. And to look at shirtless Cullen, of course.

+10 for shirtless Cullen.

I've never been able to rivalmance anyone. I've had to kill Fenris more than once though because he hated me. lol

Lol same here. On my final playthrough that I'll import into DA3, I'm gonna metagame the crap outta it so they all the companions like my Hawke, which will make it easier to get them to cooperate.

LOL shirtless Cullen... Another ref I missed in my survey responses!  Berelinde, it must be fun seeing the game through your sister's eyes. Almost like it's new again.
On riivalmances, I think most of mine have been riivalmances ... D'oh. I like it with Anders... I think he does a much better job selling his manifesto when he reads it to you.  With, Fenris, didn't like it as much. Too much hate in him already. With Seb, the promise of being princess of Starkhaven, with you know non-chaste sex, was too much to pass up... Until I got shafted with no mention in the DLCs. :(

The trick is to get him to hate you *a lot*!

Rivalmancing Fenris isn't the same as rivalmancing Anders or rivaling Varric. You don't break him by rivalling him nor do you have to become a loathsome human being. You just have to be pro-mage.

Which is kind of why I'm sorry they're ditching the friend/rival system for the next thing. Rivaling Cullen sounds like a lot of fun.

Is it weird that I wanna hear Cullen scream at the new protagonist if he hates you. I bet that man has one hell of a booming voice when he's angry!

I got my sister DA:O for Xmas last year and a few months went by... I forgot about it. Well she finally played it apparently because she called me up yelling "Alistair dumped me! WTF?" LOL

Awesome! I think it's not a DA:O experience if Alistair doesn't try to dump you. LOL Sounds like she's doing it right!

OMG.... I was completely crestfallen when he dumped me. LOL "I thought we had something special!?!?!?" I played elven mage first run. Never again.

BTW, I'd love to hear Cullen lose his composure. Image IPB

See, I pretty much done what he wanted. He didn't want to be King and I had no desire to be Queen, so I kept him as a Warden and for once it actually paid off!

I'm not gonna meta game with Cullen, if he doesn't want to be with a mage (which will be my first playthrough), then I wanna experience that with fresh eyes and be utterly mortified about it. Then I'll check the walkthroughs/forum to see if he's actually romancable with the other classes. If he's not, I'll rage. If he is then I'll try him out with a rogue or warrior.

You never played a mage and hardened him so you could get the threesome with Isabela (and the dueling specialization) then.

Fortunately, hardened Alistair can be persuaded to accept a mage Warden mistress, but it isn't the same as being queen. It's the one thing I regret about habitually playing mages. Most of the time, I don't harden him and set it up so he and the Warden go off and do Warden things together, but I wanted an import that matched the comics.

And I'm off topic again.

At least that's on thing we won't have to worry about with Cullen. He isn't royalty.

About Cullen's yelling... dunno. He doesn't seem to have strong enough voice to boom. Don't get me wrong! I love the voice. But it doesn't carry well. Some people's voices just don't project well.

I dunno, when we first meet him in DA:O and he's telling off Wilmod and then refers to Hawke as "stranger" his voice sounds quite intimidating. Plus, he's a father, of course he can yell LOL!

Agree. I think he's also rather intimidating when he tells you off for trying be neutral on the templar-Mage thing in act 1. I think he has a lot of passion hiding in there. Let it out!

If Cullen is a companion and he spurns my love, I will murder knife him.

I'm not even joking!

I'm totally with you there. I'm definitely playing a mage first to try and romance Cullen with. I think one of the best things is experiencing the game and getting to be truly surprised. Meta gaming can come later ;) .  The first time I played DA:O I ended up being Alsitair's mistress. I played the queen game, too, but my favourite ending was running off to be wardens together <3.

On a side note, my romance flag didn't trigger for that scene in DA2. I was mighty disappointed. Anyway, do you think we'll be able to import data from both origins and DA2, or only from DA2 to DA3? I haven't played ME yet, so I'm not sure how it worked there. I'm on console, and I'd hate to have to play through the game multiple times just to find out that flag triggered or not ...

I dunno about Cullen's voice. When he was yelling at Wilmod, it sounded too thin to me.  A little nasal... and nasty. I was glad when that bit passed. I don't know if that's how GE chose to do it or if he sounds that way. Cullen's tone at times, I hear the potential for quite the deep roar so I wonder if he's restraining it in some way or doing a character voice rather than letting his own shine through. Anders is pretty soft spoken and his battle calls still had some fullness to them, there's some use of the diaphragm. Maybe I'm being too particular... but Cullen's "yell" hasn't impressed me, thus far. :?

Edit: But I forgot to add that seeing him quite cross at my PC would be hot! Just not yelling cross... I bet he has an adorable nose wrinkle when he scrunches it in anger...

I got the impression he was purposely meant to sound "nasty" when you encounter him with his "this is Templar business stranger" dialogue, because at the time, we were expecting him to be either be bat sh!t insane or an extreme murderous zealot. Let's not forget on our first playthrough we had no idea that Cullen would turn out to be "the voice of reason and sanity" so I think it was meant to throw us off for a second.

I reckon he's capable of giving us a decent yell, Greg Ellis is a singer with a big vocal range (he used to be in a lot of musicals back in the 90's) so I don't doubt that he could belt out one hell of a telling off.
