A male Cullen fan? You deserve a round of applause, sir. All the guys I know who play DA hate my two favorite characters: Alistair and Cullen.
What can I say? I'm a sucker for templars

You know I never thought about it that way. Goes ditto for me.

Those templars are just too irresistible.
It's ironic that I almost always play a mage though...

I actually play on the PS3 and the PC, but mostly the PS3. I use my PC when I want to use some mods.

So I was playing DA2 earlier and Cullen says something that suggests he wasn't aware of Meredith calling for the Right of Annulment like Karras says she has at the beginning of Act 3. It seems like maybe he was purposely left out of the loop, perhaps Meredith felt that Hawke had to much of an influence on him and that his resolve again the mages was weakening.

kk So what did I miss?

edit: I kind of think that Cullen would never intentionally abandon his cause and having had actual contact with a warden would figure that while their goal is a noble one, it isn't worth a thing if the world tears itself apart before the next Blight.

Cullen imo is a man who has sort of found who he is while in the Templars, found where he belongs in the world. Sort of like how Alistair feels while he's in the Wardens. I think he would be pretty shaken by how his life has been turned upside down, but he would find some semblance of doing his duty were he to protect a village or a group of mages and finally find some peace with the PC either as a friend or a lover (or both).

This is a really, really great point! The poor guy seems destined to have a hard life no matter what. He's found "his cause" (just like you say), but now those in authority over him are bickering over what that cause actually entails and who should be in charge of it. He's going to have some hard decisions ahead of him.  Image IPB

Oh really? I need to play through it again and pay more close attention to his dialogue.

Is this in the Pro-Templar ending or Pro-Mage ending? (both?).

(Also,  *waves* I usually lurk).

It's in both, although it's in more context if you've kept Karras alive.

In the Gallows speak to Karras first and he will mention about about Meredith putting in a request for the Right of Annulment with the Divine. Then go over to speak to Cullen and he says something like "Ser Alriks solution may have been a more peaceful option compared to what I fear may occur" (I can't remember his exact words but it's said more urgently than that.)

To me that sounds like he's got a feeling that Meredith is going to take things to extreme, but doesn't know for sure, unlike Karras who is aware of Meredith's request.

I was telling LL and Brushyourteeth last night that I think that Cullen is some kind of "poster boy" for the Templars and really doesn't know what's going on. I think Meredith kept him close and high up as a sort of a "front". I imagine that all of the real dealings were behind the scenes and that Cullen wasn't aware of any (or most) of it.

Exactly, she wanted someone who was inexperienced within the Order who wouldn't question her actions. Cullen had the added bonus of being tortured by mages, so she thought she could utilise this by giving him recruits to "convert" into zealots with his scare stories and own disdain for mages. Of course, things didn't work out quite as planned (especially when she started going loopy), so she started leaving him out of important decisions etc fearing that Hawke's hold on him was making his belief in the Order waver. That would also explain why he was completely oblivious to Meredith's plans to kill Hawke, rather than just arrest him/her.

Avejajed: that is a very excellent idea. I had never thought of that but it makes a lot of sense since he always did seemed kept in the dark about things.

I really like this idea. I think it quite plausible, since otherwise there are few reasons for her to want to promote him so quickly... whether he and she are of a similar mind or not.

So... speaking of "poster boy"...  ^_^

Ah interesting point... I had never thought of interpreting it that way.  That very well could be.

It could be nothing, but the way he said it seemed to suggest that at that point he was unaware... Or maybe he was trying to give Hawke a hint.

I think saying that Cullen was likely kept in the dark exonerates him too easily. I think when he says that "the tranquil solution" would have been better than what he fears may occur suggests that he KNOWS Meredith has taken steps in the wrong direction but that he isn't doing anything about it. I think at this point Cullen knows Meredith is crazy, but he doesn't want to admit it to himself, and so he's paralyzed, not wanting to disobey his superior, but feeling uncomfortable with what she intends to do.
