The way I see it, if you want to romance a character only with protagonists of a certain gender, fine! Making them available to both will not spoil your fun. Restricting the character at the outset *will* spoil the fun of those who want him available to both, though, so I'd rather go with the option that lets more people have what they want.

It's kind of like Fenris. If you ran a female Hawke, you could imagine that he was 100% straight. If you ran a male Hawke, you could imagine him as bi. Everybody wins.

When BioWare came out with DA:O, same gendered romances were kind of frowned upon. Allowing one s/s pairing per gender was the absolute bleeding edge of social inclusivity. So yeah, they did take a more conservative approach to "background" NPCs. But the ice has been broken. Sure, some people complain very, very loudly about keeping it "real," as if that even means anything in a world with fireballs, elves, and a unanimously universal religion, but there's no going back to a more limited model. If anything, if fans demanded that a romance be restricted to one gender or cut from the game, I've got a feeling that the romance would be cut. Considering that it's Cullen on the block, is that what we want?

I think the devs have always pointed out that the most important thing is player choice and that the characters aren't necessarily bi (LOL except maybe Isabela, but she may be omnisexual -- she's like our DA version of Captain Jack Harkness.), but that they're whatever you want to imagine them as in your game. Like Anders, who never mentioned his relationship with Carl to my female Hawke, so as far as she was concerned he was straight. Or, I could still headcanon that Carl was his first, and it still works. I like that they kept it open.

So, MinttyMint, I think if you want to headcanon Cullen as straight, you should be able to do that in your game. I don't believe the devs have ever suggested that everyone will fundamentally be bisexual.

edit: also agree that I don't really care how other folks play the game, so long as I get to do it my own way. I've heard the even the writers sort of headcanoned Fenris as a gay relationship  for example, but that never affected my own interpretation of my relationships with him. I think the DA writers are sort of brilliant that way.

Well yeah, my previous comment on the matter doesnt read well... Im not very good at explaining things simply. I think the issue lies with the fact both sides, those who are for and against the openess, wont leave it be. They want to be right and for their opinion to matter more than anyone elses. Bashing and complaining as they fight there way to the top, but since everyone involved is just doing the exact same, its an endless loop.

His rationale was that the devs would be able to write a much, much richer romance if they could focus on a single one, and that a female LI would be the way to go. After all, you could not ask men to romance another man, but it was perfectly acceptable for women to romance other women. He got pummeled into dust. Good times.

Anyway, sorry for the derailment. I just figured that since the subject under discussion was Cullen, folks here might want to know.

I know what you mean, that the topic just will. not. go. away.  I just sorta sit on the sidelines and twiddle my thumbs, knowing that whatever BW does, it'll be great. So, I don't even enter those threads anymore. Too  much hatin', indeed, on both sides.

OHMYGOD. That view is such a ridiculous stereotype of how men are only ok with same gender relationships if it's f/f... and they can watch.  I just can't bring myself to believe that that was a genuine suggestion.

I've got about maybe a quarter of it done...I want to take my time on it and make you guys really love it. Have to take a break now as I can barely move my neck, and I have to get some food in my stomach.
