Okay I'll try to give you the short story, this may take a while...
Wynne, her circle-mage son Rhys, another mage named Adrian, Shale, and Knight-Captain Evangeline (of Orlais circle) are sent out by the Divine to save Wynne's tranquil friend, Pharamond, who was researching a way to reverse tranquilty and got possesed by a demon (which should be impossible) Knight-Captain Evangeline was sent by the head of the Seekers, Lord Seeker Lambert, to kill them if it was true that Pharamond found a way to reverse tranquility to stop it from getting out.
So during this lovely little trip they meet up with Shale and Evangeline and Rhys fall in love. Once they get to Pharamod they found out Pharamod(who is now untrainquil) had found a way to reverse tranquility. Evangeline now reluctent to kill them returns with them to tell the Divine the news. They get to the divine (with Lord Seeker Lambert pissed) and try to convince her to consider reversing tranquility on the mages. The divine doesn't agree but allows a meeting between the first enchanters of every circle to discuss the idea. (This is the first meeting allowed since the events of Kirkwall which were about a year before this)
So all the first enchaters of the circles and the grand enchanter (who is now Fiona ironically) all meet but end up talking about rebelling. In the middle of this meeting Lambert and the templars go against the divine and start killing the mages. Wynne and Evangeline (who is now on the mages side) escape but Rhys is held prisoner at the White Spire (the Orlais circle). The Divine helps Wynne orchestrate a plan to free Rhys and the other mages held prisoner. Wynne, Shale, Lelianna, and Evagngeline enter the White Spire and destroy all the phylactories there and free Rhys and the other mages from the prison. During the breakout Evangeline is killed but Wynne sacrifices herself by giving Evangeline the spirit of Faith inside her, therefore Wynne dies instead (sad I know.)
After the mages escaped Lord Seeker learned about the Divine helping the mages and decleared templars apart from chantry rule, therefore breaking apart from the chantry. The Mages and Templars are now fighting against eachother.
Cassandra's not in the book so I'm not sure whether Lambert is her superior or equal. I'm also not sure whether she's under the divine or Lambert.
So anyway that's the story, it's probably really confusing so let me know if you wan't me to clear anything up.
