Hm, if this novel is anything to go buy, the main city of Orlais where the Grand Cathedral/White Spire is situated is in the throws of attack/civil war, which means it'll look like a bomb site by the time we start playing as the new protagonist, which seems a shame since it would have been nice to see it in all it's glory... Hmm, had the fighting gotten inside the city gates yet in Asunder? I don't really recall, but I seem to remember them needing to talk their way through a guarded gate to get back inside the city at the end.  So, maybe the Cathedral can be saved... for a while. I also would love to see it all swanky before everything goes boom.

The Cathedral appears to remain untouched. When they hit the City gates there was a guard waiting to take them to the Divine.

Then I ran across one of my annotations which said "Val Royeaux is burning." Rats.

The Rite of Annulment was never actually called until Anders redecorated Hightown, in year 7. That's also the year the Circle rebelled. It had been building for almost a decade. The codex entries in DA:O even point to it with regards to the Fraternities item, but that was the first time it actually happened.

So, I've finally finished reading it. I liked it, sounds like DA3 is gonna be a blast! Although I'm expecting to see the Orlais in a bit of a state if we begin playing after the Asunder events.

Also, it appears that the Kirkwall Circle mages were still killed under the Right of Annulment after Anders blew the Chantry up, even though Hawke, Cullen 'n' co killed Meredith. I was under the impression that it would have been made null and void... that Cullen would have been able to send word to stop it since he was the one who gave that speech about it being uncalled etc. Which makes me wonder if he was over thrown/chased out of Kirkwall almost immediately after?

Also, now that Lambert is most likely dead, I would presume the next person in charge would be Ser Arnaud (the guy that took over Evangeline's job after she sided with the mages.) The guy sounded like an arrogant dick, so if he's taken over as Lord Seeker, then sh!ts gonna get real lol. Which now makes me wonder if Cassandra is still going to be part of the Seeker organisation now that they've split from the Divine.

Also, I've been reading for so long that my eyes feel like they've dried out lol.

I'm also wondering if Anders is gonna make a cameo with Adrian helping him... I wonder if they'd suddenly be romantically involved if your Hawke wasn't romancing him? It totally wouldn't surprise me.

True, but then why did Cullen only make a stand (if you play pro-templar) after they'd hit the Gallows courtyard, which is when Meredith announced the Right of Annulment properly. It must have at least still been in affect after they killed Meredith. If that's the case then he could have called a stop to it? Surely the Templars couldn't have killed all the mages whilst between the Anders blowing up the Chantry and the final battle with Meredith?

... I'm so confused lol.

Still no reply from DG about Cullen's surname. He's been on Twitter since Danny posted tweeted him about it twice. I'm gonna presume his silence is because he doesn't wanna give anything away since we know Cullen is making an appearance in some capacity. Perhaps we'll finally get to find out?

It is possible that Cullen lacks a surname, especially if he was born to into peasant or laborer family, or if he was given up at a young age as an orphan.

As for the Kirkwall circle, I swear Asunder mentions half of the mages being killed. Looking for my Kindle right now.

Okay, found it. The quote was that Anders' actions in Kirkwall "set off a series of events that led to the slaughter of nearly every member of the city's Circle."

Meredith was attempting to annul the circle (she sent for the annulment early in Act 3). She was attempting to annul the circle during the final quest. That's part of the DA2 canon.

No matter if you side with the mages or the templars, the battle is a slaughterfest for both sides and Orsino's actions do not help the mages at all. Even when Cullen attempts to stop Meredith inside the gallows (templar ending, defy meredith), he and those other templars are only able to save a small number of mages.

Yeah it does, under the Right of Annulment. I had just presumed that Cullen had managed to cancel it/stop it after he killed Meredith.

Yeah, that's probably the case but we tweeted DG to see if he could tell us whether he actually has one or not. He didn't reply so we're wondering if that's because we'd find out in DA3 (if he's a companion.)

Anyway, I really liked how Evangeline's character developed throughout the novel. She actually started out perhaps slightly more stern/by the book than Cullen was, but gradually over time came to see the flaws in the way the Templar Order were running things, eventually siding with the mages and getting into a relationship with one. Although I don't see Cullen ever becoming a full on mage supporter, I could see him ending up being of the same mindset as the Divine.

The problem is, now I've read Asunder I'm wonder if he would ever become a full on romancable companion for a mage, simply because they've pretty much covered it in the book. Although, tbh I'm having even more trouble working out how they would go about introducing him as a companion in any capacity since reading Asunder. If we don't get him as companion/LI then it'll probably be due to him being too difficult to integrate into the party without it seeming forced or far fetched.

*Edit* Did anyone else notice how often beads of sweat on peoples brows were mention? I think DG has a fascination with it lol.

After, since Varric mentions that the templars have split with the Chantry.

edit: ostensibly the intererogation is supposed to be 3 yrs after Act 3 according to the ten yr long timescale of the game.  But, to be honest, I've never found a good source confirming that.

I also liked Evangeline and has some of the same reservations about the surface similarities with a possible Cullen mage romance. But... thinking about it some more.. in some sense, that's all there is to Evangeline. Templar who questions the Order and falls for a mage, switching sides. There's a whole lot more to explore with Cullen and his life's rollercoaster, and mage is only one possible occupation for our PC. So I don't think it precludes Cullen's storyline necessarily. But given that she had the same position, I couldn't help but wonder if some of the comparisons were intentional.

What's funny is that I actually thought Evangeline was a little too hard ass in the beginning. Her seeming lack of empathy and "throw  'em in the dungeon" attitude was part of the extremity of the White Spire that sorta threw me out of the story at first. I mean, I know there's been a crackdown, but still I had a hard time finding her believable at first. Liked her better later on, tho.

I wonder if the notion of the Right of Annulment seems on the surface more formal than it really is. If it's just a reason to put forward for indiscriminately killing every mage in your Circle, then that's pretty much what the templars were doing in Act 3. Particularly in the pro-templar scene with the three surrendering mages, where they're supposed to be just killed out of hand because of the Annulment, i.e. because the mages could be compromised, therefore everyone dies. Of course, I don't think we ever hear whether the Divine formally gave Meredith the go ahead, but Meredith claims at one point to Cullen that all it takes is her command or something like that.
