So yea, totally didn't go with my instinct to not read that thread. I hate the arguement that he does nothing, or doesn't stand up to Meredith, and that makes him a boring/mediocre character. Cullen is a solider. He has been taught to follow his orders, to take the command of his superiors without thought or judgement. That's what soliders are trained to do, that is their job. The fact that he stands up to her in the end is a huge statement, and step for him to take against everything he's probably been taught as a Templar.
My boyfriend tells me all the time about how the Marine Core has made him stupid. Not in the way that he doesn't know what 2+2 is, but in the manner of coming up with his own opinions and feelings. Now, he has been in for about 7 years now (this is his last year thankfully) I can't even imagine the type of blind dedication the Chantry and the Templars must instill in their recruits for such a long period of time. I'm no expert on the methods of the Order as described by the writers, but when comparing it to real life organizations that share in it's structure, I have to believe that Cullen is just as brainwashed to follow orders as any other solider.
Precisely! And lets not forget that random Templar guy in the Gallows who mentions that he's been part of the Order since he was 15, then chances are that Cullen also spent the best part of his life in the Templar Order, during a his teen years when most young men and women would be developing their own sense of self. His whole personality has been built around the teaching of the Order/Chantry (especially if it turns out that he was indeed an Orphan left in the Chantrys care.)
