Getting nostalgic, so for fun, some fanart inspired by one of my fics.

See, I want a Cullen who does catch on that your PC likes him (provided youv'e been choosing the right dialogue options). He doesn't have to know what he's doing, per se... but it'd be nice if he could tell and confront you about it. You could either let him down easy, let him down cruel and cold (which I'd never do) or admit he's right - that you do care for him and cue first kiss!

@Lola I think the first time it might be more akin to Anders, but with some Alistair undertones. So he might stutter at first and then say it more assuredly. I think when he says it during the final battle he'll be a bit more...sure of it and it'll be one of the most tender moments you have with him.

Protagonist: "Of course. Is there something I can help you with?"

Protagonist: *Chuckles* "You dragged me all the way out here just to tell me that?"

Cullen: "Yes... no... urgh, this isn't coming out right...." *Takes deep breath*

Protagonist: *Confused* "I'm sorry Cullen, I'm not following you. What are you trying to say?"

Cullen: "Andraste's tight pantie girdles *insert name*! I'm trying to tell you that I love you! I love everything about about you... you infuriating, wonderful woman/man!"

Hmm, I think he'd have to be "love" before he shags you... so I think he'd declare it at/during/after the first hook up. And, I see him sorta agonizing over tell you. Like, you have a close call with some battle and he decides he has to declare himself after that. ( I suppose that's sorta Alistair-ish, tho, isn't it?) But I see there being some catalyst like that, like almost losing you.

I could also see something funny, like one of the companions tricking him into admitting it while the PC is listening, so he has to fess up.

I totally read that as "... like one of the companions tickling him into admitting it..." and I could totally see it going down *exactly* like that.

It's a typical night in camp. Everybody is tired and a little punchy. An especially flirtatious character, captivated by Cullen's good looks and intrigued by his thoroughly professional manner, decides to have some fun by baiting the paladin templar. He tells her to stop. She doesn't. He repeats the request, choking it out between the giggles. The tickler, still teasing, asks him "Why? Are you saving yourself for <CHARNAME> or something?" Awkward silence ensues. The character picks up on Cullen's hesitation and plays it up, eventually forcing him to divulge his feelings. His heart heavy with the knowledge that he is totally busted, he makes his confession to the protagonist him/herself. Naughtiness ensues.

Edit: Because I think R2 is right. I can't see him bunking up without declaring his feelings first.

Just become good friends with him - be kind, maybe joke around with him a few times, and voila! I actually like the romance better if you choose not to initiate it (by saying "Has anyone ever told you how handsome you are?"). If you wait and you're friends, he'll do the initial tentative flirting and it is SO much better than you making the first move!!!

I just was nice to him and earned approval until he offered me a rose. I didn't shoot down his gift but accepted it and gushed over it and later, when he tries to flirt, I went easy on him. Not too forward but still accepting. If you insist you're friends, he backs off. You insist on shagging right there, he backs off. So you have to take it easy, just keep accepting his overtures and picking nice things to say and eventually he'll say "Alright! I can't take it anymore! You're driving me crazy! I can't think straight and I feel like my head's about to explode! Here's the thing..." He makes his desirs known (even though we already knew and asks to be with you. It's really sweet. <3

I'm paraphrasing a lot because it's been a while since I romanced him.

Oh, yeah he says that anyway, even if you flirt first. He's definitely my favorite romance out of all the Bioware games.

Way before the rose incident happens, though, he'll test the water by telling you that you're beautiful or basically asking if you think he's a buffoon. it happens in a few different ways, so that you can pass on one romance choice in order to pursue other dialogue that might seem more important for your character at the time.

That was one of the better things about DA:O romances, to me - it wasn't "one <3 button per conversation = romance." There were many different avenues to it. Even when it comes to your first night with Alistair - you can invite him to sleep with you or you can wait until he goes crazy with desire and pretty much begs you to spend the night with him. Awesome! And both ways are great for different RP choices.

One of my favorite things to do on a playthrough is initiate the "wow you're handsome!" conversation, and then tell him not to get worked up about it. It earned you a small amount of disapproval for being a tease, but it showed that Alistair wasn't fooled by your comments and knows that you both know he's hot. And then he still initiates the romance later.  

Totally worth trying!

Nah not exactly although:O:O:O:O:O rofl. No I think he'd be a bit more like the Disciple from Kotor 2 and have a certain admiration of the PC while retaining that inability to express himself properly. I mean the PC wouldn't be his first crush, but I don't think he'd be able to talk to a woman yet in a romantic sense. He'd stutter for a moment before shutting up and gathering his thoughts.

He might come off creepy at first but if the PC really thought about it then she'd realise he just comes off a little to strong. When he'd say I love you I think the actual saying of it would be tender and loving rather than awkward and forced. It's just before that he might have a little bit of trouble. I imagine he'd be sweating a little bit.

I don't think I've ever tried it that way, Brush. I'll have to give it a go. I was trying to romance Zevran with my city elf but the way I'm playing her just doesn't seem like it should jive with him.

Later as she slowly comes to, he'd be so relieved/over come with emotion that he'd blurt out "Thank the Maker! You're alive! I thought I'd lost you. I don't know what I'd do if..." *another of the companions come over to check on the protagonist*

Then later on in camp one of the companions will mention that Cullen hadn't left your bed side the entire time you were unconcious, choosing to watch over you should the worse happen. You then approach Cullen who is off on his own somewhere thinking/reflecting, which is when you'd thank him and after a heart to heart he'd declare his love for you.

This is how I'd want it to happen for Cullen, sort of more heartfelt with maybe just a very little bit of silliness.

OMG, I totally read this as he RAN HER OVER. Hmm... love declarations after that would be... awkward? LOL

But, yeah, that would also be fun. I like the idea of a significant catalyst where he feels compelled to say it, or he just blurts it out in the throws of some strong emotion.

A scenario I've been thinking about for a different story is that he overhears one of the companions talking to PC about it, and she admits she "likes" him (I know... how high school!). Then, since he has this foreknowledge, he can be more in control. Then he's in a position where he can probe and needle her about it in a reckless way to confirm she feels the same way before declares himself.
