"Mary: "It's THEIR fault for having tears that taste like candy." #WritersPit" - Lol hell knows what they've got planned for our feels.

Well THAT'S not ominous at all.  LOL

I think they may have been talking about how much fun it is to taunt us by almost-but-not-quite telling us something.

Possibly, it didn't have any other context to it and it wasn't a conversation so it's hard to say.

Okay, so berelinde! - I read your post a few pages back about Justinia, and wanted to respond.  Image IPB

Just kidding. This is totally not going to be evil. LOL! The novel could definitely turn out to have nothing to do with our in-game lore/canon knowledge, that's true. But I do think that as far as David Gaider's characterisation of the Divine goes, it should probably be pretty reliable. Not her deeds, maybe, but her personality and motivations. Does that make sense to anyone besides me?

So I've been re-reading Asunder (again - I think this is read 4) and actually underlining and writing notes (please don't say it - I know I'm waaay too invested in this series!) - so when I get to the end of it again, I'm probably going to round up all of Justinia's notable quotes about mages. Would you be interested in seeing them? Only asking since you said you were actually trying to understand what I see in her (and granted, there's not much happening in "Leliana's Song" except that we know she had questionable beginnings!).

It's like the comic books. They're probably not canon, but now we know what Alistair would say if he were in an Antivan swamp. Image IPB

Also, I just realized your Cullen dialogue thing is up! *runs to check it*

You know, Justinia still sorta baffled me in Asunder. I think I wanted her to be black and white, so I could fully root for her as a pro-mage Divine. Then, they all go see her and it seemed like she had about eighteen different angles she was working. This is why I listed in one of the threads that one thing I want is to meet her. I want to figure her out. And, if she's anything like Leliana, and playing "the game" I probably never will. LOL

This. Exactly.

So berelinde, I did the Cullen thing and it's awesome! More people should know about it. We should plant it in one of the Cullen-hater threads under the guise of being able to murder knife him. Suckers.  Image IPB

Justinia... I don't know. If she stands anything to gain by backing the mages and making the rest of the whole world mad at her, I sure don't understand what it would be. But that doesn't count for much. Either she has great compassion and integrity, or something going on elsewhere that would make it profitable to turn the whole world against herself in favor of mage freedom.

Mostly we see her playing Lambert for a fool. Which is awesome.  Image IPB
She'd also have to have Wynne fooled. And Wynne, while not perfect, isn't someone to be trifled with. She's generally pretty wily and knows what's up.

As an aside, I'd love to see Justinia and Flemeth cat fight. Flemeth would win, of course, but it would be awesome.

So, I've been thinking it would be kinda cool (if we don't have class based origins) to start out as a street urchin. For example:

As a young child you were orphaned or abandoned at the side of the road and ever since then your  whole life has been spent trying to survive. In the gutters of Orlais, you be, steal and kill for coin, targetting the rich and those who are too weak to stop you. Experiencing nothing but hardship throughout your life, you've seen and done things that would mark you for life. Presently you've made your home admidst the rabble of unfortunates just like you, but every day is overshadowed by the fear of being betrayed. However you have one friend, who you've known since you found yourself on the streets as a kid. The two of you run together, often teaming up in order to pull off the odd con/pickpocketing trick. He/she is the closest thing you have to a family (possibly a lover, should you choose that option), or alternatively it's just you and your trusty Mabari.

I just finished Asunder yesterday and I was really impressed with Justinia. I didn't think she was playing the Game for the Game's sake, I thought she was using it to her advantage and to make a real difference in the Chantry. After Kirkwall, the whole situation is like walking on eggshells, so she has to be somewhat discreet with her intentions, imo. I don't know. I'm still sorting out my thoughts.

I'd love something like that. Alternatively, that sounds like it would be a really cool class origin for a rogue too (if they went that route).

Yeah, that would work for a rogue too come to think of it lol. I'd really like to have a playable prologue (or 3) that really kicks you in the gut and makes you feel more attached to your character.

Yeah, I'm completely in agreement with you. I mean, she's a master at playing the Game, and I'm sure she knows how to move her pieces around to get what she wants, but she seems to be a genuinely compassionate person (look at how she saved Leliana) and she does seem to also genuinely love the Maker and the Chantry. So whatever she's up to doesn't seem to be in conflict with those few things we can assume about her.

I think there's one of two things happening there:
1.) She knows she won't be able to change the Chantry within her lifetime, so by letting the situation escalate in a very public fashion, she's essentially allowing for "no compromise" as far as abuse against mages and Templar/Seeker-held Chantry authority goes. Even if she's deposed or martyred, no one can reverse the spark that she ignited toward Chantry reform and mage liberty.
2.) She's separating the wheat from the chaff, so to speak. There's a reckoning coming, and her actions serve to purge the Chantry of the power hungry and mage-hating. By taking the stand that she has, she's drawing all Chantry-loyal folk to her side where she can join with the mages (if they'll let her) in fighting off the rogue templars and seekers, who are the real heretics if you think about it.

Or there's always options 3.) (I don't know what I'm talking about) or 4.) (it will be such a complete surprise that none of us could possibly guess what's going to happen)  Image IPB

I mean, I wasn't expecting hugs and kisses, but as I was reading it, I sorta worried that she'd like, allow them to be thrown in the dungeon or something. I'll have to go back...

I really love this, LL - it's a very neutral background that works for either a good guy ("I don't want to be that person anymore. I don't want to make anyone else feel as helpless as I did.") or a bad guy ("This world took a big dump on me and I don't owe anyone a thing.")

It also would explain why your character (even at level 1) is so skilled and competent! (it bugs me in games when they're like "congrats, baker! You will now be a hero." - thankfully DA's never done that to us yet)

Was that the scene in the Grand Cathedral where she scolded Wynne for sending the message to the Circles (secretly on her orders, but she had to seem like she disapproved), approved the enchanters' conclave, and then made the pro-mage speech that made Adrian cry?

Lola's suggestion even works for an apostate origin. Mages can be sneaky and street smart. And putting people to sleep makes it easier to nick their loot!

Edit: And I've created a monster. Sis saw the Cullen slideshow and wants a Varric romance one.

That would be an interesting way to start out with a permanent companion, but I was thinking the friend would be a temp companion that would either get killed or arrested (where you'd encounter him/her later in the game) or something.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Of course, a different playable origin for each class would be optimal, but if we didn't get that, then the whole street urchin thing would be a good enough alternative and serve as a way to show us the ropes with the controls etc.

Which could then lead on to how our protagonist gets caught up in the whole Inquisitor thing (if that survey is legit), or whatever it is that ropes him/her into saving the world lol.

LOL yes...

Edit: you know... Maybe it was the scolding. I've still only read the whole thing through the one time. So I probably didn't know yet that it was on her orders. Or did I at that point? Anyhoo, I guess I expected some more overt support from her. She was very poker face. Again, I'll have to go read it again.
