So, next question Ladies! (The others are gonna have a lot to catch up on later!)

What is everyone's thoughts on Lyrium addiction? Do you believe that the Chantry give Templar's lyrium in order to keep their hold on them since it's addictive? How long do you think it takes for the addiction to kick in? Can a Templar survive without lyrium if they choose to go cold turkey or would it drive them mental? What are the long term effects of lyrium on the body?

I actually worry about Cullen and the possibility of his lyrium addiction becoming problematic. It would be awesome to see the effects of lyrium withdrawl happening to him in camp though, I could just imagine our PC being woken up in the middle of the night to the sounds of cursing and belongings being thrown around, getting up to investigate she finds Cullen panicking, ransacking his tent looking for his vial as the lack of lyrium in his blood starts to take effect and our PC has to try and calm him down or stroke his hair and soothe him (if you're romancing him) until he falls asleep after he's finally taken his dose. It's horrible to think that one day he'll end up like that old Templar we met back in Ferelden outside the Chantry who's mind had completely gone.

... Hm, that's a thought. What will the Templars do about their lyrium now that they've broken away from the Chantry, since it's the Chantry that controls the lyrium supply from the Dwarfs. Even on the black market they'd never be able to acquire enough to sustain a whole army for long.

That's something to ponder. Here's what the wiki says re: the Chantry:

"Lyrium is used by the Chantry to control the templars: templars are given lyrium to "develop their talents" (though Alistair seems to doubt whether it actually has any real effect), which also leaves them addicted and thus within the control of the Chantry, which controls the lyrium trade."

And here's what the codex says on prolonged use:

"Lyrium has its costs, however. Prolonged use becomes addictive, the cravings unbearable. Over time, templars grow disoriented, incapable of distinguishing memory from present, or dream from waking. They frequently become paranoid as their worst memories and nightmares haunt their waking hours. "

Unless the Templars made some kind of deal with the dwarves to get thier lyrium directly, I guess they'd be screwed. I can only suppose that withdrawl would be complete anguish - like trying to kick heroine.

Uh-oh, Cullen's gonna be well and truly ****ed then! The **** he's experienced is gonna come back and haunt him something rotten when he's older! I hope we can get him off it, before it's too late. :crying:

Shall we hold an intervention? "Cullen, we're all here because we love you and want you to be well..." LOL

That's a crazy question! I love it.

I'd probably - in real life - go with door #1. I don't share well with others.

However... door #2 is intriguing. I'd have to set some ground rules. Like you can bring in whoever you want but you can only kiss me. And then I get to kill them. LOL

LOL! ... Do you think he's still young enough that he could come off lyrium and come out the other end relatively unscathed with his mind still intact?

He's young enough to come off it "quirky" but not insane. I can handle quirky... like "Where'd I put my keys?" or "Today's Tuesday, right?" or "That magic monkey that lives under our bed said to pick up some cheese from the market".

I'd pick number two, my character couldn't bare to watch his mind slip away like that... it would be like watching your partner of 30+ years mind deteriorate due to Alzheimer's disease. She'd just have to remind herself that under any other circumstance Cullen wouldn't behave like that. Although as I said in the thread, when his mind fully returned he'd be really pissed off about being an abomination and would more than likely ask the PC to kill him.

LOL, that would be cute! I bet there's some way to reverse the effects anyway. If they can reverse tranquility then they can come up with something to stop the undesirable effects of lyrium withdrawal.

No clue. I wonder if there's a thread where we could ask the powers that be this question.Posted Image

I've no idea. That little Templar guy that was locked in Arl Howe's dungeon in DA:O seemed to have been in there for quite some time, so probably a good few months at the very least.

I think* in Asunder at the end Evangeline mentions it being something like 2 weeks though my head could just be making up these things, I'll go look back and see if I can find it.
Can you imagine Cullen becoming like that templar in the hanged man? Awh poor baby ):

2 weeks?! That's terrible!

... The Templar in the Hanged Man? ****, I thought he was just drunk!

I don't think the Templar in the Hanged Man was in withdrawal. I think his mind was just cracked out from years of use. Like the dude in front of the Denerim Chantry in DA:O. Am I wrong?

One more thing: Samson was "off the dust" for some time but still craved it.

Yeah the templar in the hanged man was still on it, which means either Cullen continues to use lyrium and becomes like that or he goes into withdrawal and pretty much the same thing happens :(

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about him! So, they can survive then! He was just a bit grumpy without it... I could tolerate that. If they're taking lyrium in dust form, does that mean they're sniffing it like coke?

Oh, I always though lyrium was a liquid!
Did one of the devs say they decided to get rid of lyrium withdrawal? I think they might of but I can't really remember...

That seems a weird thing to retcon when it's been mentioned in two games, especially as lyrium still makes them bat **** crazy.

I'm not sure where the quote was, but I remember reading something like that too.  It may have even been Gaider that said something to that effect.

Hm, something interesting Samson the retired Templar says in DA2:

"They don't do anything to keep you, ya know? You join the Order, you're free to walk away. But they're the only ones who got the dust." "You need to drink the stuff to face down the magickers. Problem is, if you ever try to stop, it just about kills you."

Samson looks like he's in his 50's though it's hard to tell since he looks pretty rough. He also has those purpley/red rings around his eyes that Cullen has... I think that's maybe something to do with the lyrium.

I'd think they maybe bow, kneel or nod their head or something

ooh you could be right about that! I kind of like the purpleish around Cullens eyes. I know some people said they don't like it or something but I thing it sort of adds a little.. er 'roughness' to his look
