Ok, someone else posted this in another thread, but I really like the idea so I'll re-post it in here:

"What if, after you create your protagonist, the scene opens on him/her regaining consciousness after a bender in a local tavern, and they discover that in the midst of last night's antics, they enlisted with the Inquisition."

Seriously, I'd LOVE this to happen! What a way to start the game!

Oh that is a brilliant way to start the game! And quite humorous.

"Wahh, people like things in video games that I don't like!! How dare they." sums it up perfectly. Why do people suddenly want the option to kill Cullen so much? Because he's popular? So confusing...

Welcome!

You're spot on, by the way. It's the same thing that happened to Alistair. Insecure guys whine over a male NPC's popularity. I'm sure the devs view these demands with about the same desire to appease as they viewed the "kill Alistair" threads, back in the day. As for the people who hate on him because they think he's a mage hater, these complaints have slightly more merit because they aren't mirrors of the poster's own insecurity complex, but I doubt the devs are going to rewrite the script over them, either. It's like people who blame Anders for bringing on the Rite of Annulment because they never bothered talking to the people in the Gallows who said the Rite was already on its way. Their perception is influenced by ignorance. If you never make an effort to obtain the facts, you can't really make an informed opinion. What is an opinion worth when it's based on misinformation?

My sister did this on her first playthrough of DA2. She never bothered talking to Cullen, so she didn't hear him talking about his doubts. She thought he was a total jerk. After actually talking to the guy (at my encouragement), her opinion of him softened. She still thinks I'm mental, but it's not because I like Cullen.

I was just getting ready to do that.

Seriously, though, if the protagonist is a member of the inquisition at all, it would work. It wouldn't even have to be after a bender. Press gangs are an historical fact. The PC wakes up with a sore head, a new uniform, and no recollection of how she got either. She can explain it away by saying that she got drunk and blacked out or she can say she got hit over the head, robbed, and tossed into the barracks (I could see lyrium-deprived templars rolling passers-by for coin). Either way, the player isn't forced to make a chantry zealot character just because the game demands it. It's a lot easier roleplaying a mage biding her time, waiting for a good place to take vengeance than it is to play a mage who enlists voluntarily.

That would work too. I think, if we are destined to be pigeon holed into working with the Chantry (even if it's temporary) then forcing the protagonist into it via the blackout/drunk thing, or some way in which our PC isn't going to be happy about it (with the option to screw them over later) would be the best option.

Personally I'm leaning towards the theory that the Inquisition will be the newly renamed Templars/Seekers, rather than the protagonist being the Inquisitor.

I love this idea. There's so many different ways they could go with this whole Inquisition thing... I'm so curious now to see what  they really do!! Gah!

I dunno? I've never noticed you calling him Cully lol. But, it's probably best we don't refer to him with nicknames or "omgz he's so sexy" outside of this thread. Other forum users are starting to get really nasty out there.

Yeah, I don't know why though... so we like Cullen and are enthusiastic about him possibly being a companion/LI in DA3... so what?? We just happen to have the character ahead of time, just wait until the other companions/LIs get announced and then all the hypocrites telling us off for talking about Cullen will be going on about the companion/LIs they're interested in...

I just want to say that even though I don't post too much and more or less just lurk, you guys are a great bunch and this is easily the friendliest board on this website, and your enthusiasm for Cullen and DA3 makes *me* more enthusiastic. Don't ever change!!

You know... things like this baffle me. I mean, honestly, the "why is everyone talking about Cullen all of the sudden" isn't really because of us going crazy fangirl all over everyone, right? Because most of us avoid those main threads.  And, we've been talking about Cullen all along, it hasn't suddenly peaked or something.  It's because EVERYONE is suddenly talking about Cullen, because he makes sense for the next game. And, then we get scapegoated.

Maybe that hang over idea could go varying ways. So if you want to drink yourself under the table then too much alcohol would be how you ended up conscripting into the Inquisition. But if you didn't want too get plastered then someone would spike your drink in order to conscript you, or if you didnt drink at all then you'd get knocked out by a group of hired thugs trying to force people into joining or something.

Or just have the PC wake up with a headache and no explanation at all. "Why do I feel like death? How did I wind up here?"

And then people would complain about amnesia as a plot device, I suppose. Still, it's less offensive than denial of player agency, so I say go for it!

And R2 is sending me instructions on how to do body swaps, so I might be able to come up with a few more dialogues to tide us over. They do take a while to make, but if the demand is there, I'll do it.

Some Cullen dialogue (my version of his past) my boredom strikes again :P

As it happens, it seems to be possible to add Cullen's head morph to the character generation screen. It turns out a little screwed up (no eyebrows, no stubble, "off" complexion), but the shape of the features is right. I'm going to play around with it when I get home, especially looking to see if I can find a skin texture mod that has something in between the glowing, youthful skin of my avatar and the pitted, alcoholic-like skin of the next click up on the complexion slider. But the cheekbones, jaw, and lips are right, and when you're using the character creator, those are the hardest parts to change.

Well obsessively checking and stalking this thread has finally caught up with me because last night I had a Cullen dream!!!! And ... actually it was an Anders x Cullen dream, so I apologize profusely beforehand to all who are not fans of such a pairing, but apparently I lked it more than I realized LOL

Anyway, I was Cullen (yes I write and play as boys enough in games that I guess I get to be them in my dreams, too lol), and I guess I defied the templars for my, erm, lover *cough* and so we were trying to escape the Gallows. Anders had this new spell that would temporarily open a portal straight to Tevinter, and we could escape there. I, erm, I mean Cullen, was not down with this plan because, OMG Tevinter, Anders, really?! But he was so sweet and insistent, and Cullen finally gave in, so Anders created the portal, took Cullen's hand, and walked through it... but something about the lyrium in Cullen's body prevented him from entering the portal, so when Anders went in first, Cullen got left behind, and the two were separated!! *sob* So then this villain (not Meredith, just some dude) interegated Cullen to find out where Anders had gone, and believe you me, my brain came up with some pretty nasty interrogation techniques which I'd rather not share :(

So, yeah, no happy ending lol The dream ended there :crying:

It was way sad lol I woke up shortly afterward, but fell back asleep again and this time dreamed that the same villain had stolen one of my cats and was torturing her (I was myself again). So I had to rescue my kitty, but this meant leaving my other kitty behind.

It was a night of nightmares lol

It was terrible lol When I woke up again (yeah I am a restless sleeper) she was sleeping at the foot of my bed as usual, so I went to hug her, but she was in a dead sleep and never noticed lol My other cat was wide awake though and sitting by my pillow, staring creepily at me, the way she apparently does throughout the night...
