I think you may be right R2 - many of our DA2 companions seem unnecessary for anything other than a "well, they'll need companions so here ya go". That being said, there's always an off chance that one of them will have inadvertently done something that affects DA3... a ripple effect, if you will.
If there had been no Cullen then they would've had to dream up another NPC to deal with Wilmod and Meredith. I don't think it would've been as effective though. From the few converstaions we got to have with Cullen we know that he's dedicated to his job and believes in the Order. Standing up to Mereidth was a huge deal for his character whereas someone else may have just appeared to be mouthing off to the boss and trying to play hero.

It was hard to go back and try the one on one after that, but I wanted to be able to say I'd done it. LOL At least I got to impress Cassandra!

Ah, the Arishok. I had to fight that bugger one on one with a mage... who was specced as a spirit class/spirit healer....
Fun times were not had.

Lol.I did that but with Leliana and Sten in DA:O . On my first playthrough,I totally missed encountering Leliana and I didn't know Sten could be a companion so I left him in his cage. So towards the end I was like, "Where the hell is the other girl I'm supposed to have with me.?"
But a playthrough without Fenris would be torture for me.

Oh, and for the record, if anybody else decides to do a mesh swap to make, say, champion armor look like templar armor, you should probably be aware that the name of the item will change, too. So don't be alarmed.

Dunno, but Cullen's sword does change between scenes. He typically has that red one, I believe, and then in the end of Last Straw he has a black-hilted one.
