Sword of mercy? Yeah, it totally works in Thedosian lore because of Andraste, and there is that whole St. Michael the Archangel association to give us the real world connection to the concept, but swords are also associated with justice. Either way, it works.

Sword of Mercy might be cool as the top banana loot item for him. Like a Holy Grail find if it's actually THE Sword of Mercy they either find accidentally or maybe given to him by it's keeper to fight the good fight.

Obviously, they are going to have to repeat gift items because how many iconic gift ideas are there in the world, but I do like it when the gift is actually something that the NPC winds up using, especially when the NPC winds up using it because it's better than anything else the player might equip him with.
Aveline: kickass shield, better than most shields you could give her
Fenris: kickass sword, better than most swords you could give him
Merrill: ring, nothing remarkable, better random loot available
Isabela: amulet, nothing remarkable, better random loot available
Varric: ring, never shows up in game, which is a crying shame
Anders: amulet, never shows up in game, which is a crying shame
Of course, with Anders, every DLC from that point onwards included an amulet specifically for him, so either he has far more necks than appear on his inventory page, nobody talks to each other in that department, they had amulets on the brain, or nobody cared. But I digress.
I kinda hope Cullen's iconic gift is a shield. For the reasons others have stated.

Agree it would be nice to have the gifts be usable. Aveline's was pretty sweet, but even with Fenris, I had way better swords for him already (the dangers of too many item DLCs).
A shield or a meaningful sword for Cullen would be cool. Or maybe kickass jewelry that actually means something. Like, you go back to the Fereldan tower and run across some thing from his past, like some sword of mercy ring they give every recruit upon taking their vows. But it got magicked when the tower fell or something so now it does something cool.

Combine the ideas. Give him a gift certificate to a tattoo parlor. I apologize.
I figure that Cullen's probably got some religious iconography tattooed somewhere tasteful. A flaming sword over his heart, maybe. I don't think he got it for the sole purpose of body art, but I could totally see him getting it in commemoration of taking his vows or as a symbol of his devotion.
Edit: and because it's late and my brain is tired, I just envisioned him getting that tattoo as a very young man, possibly before his chest hair grew in. And now, the "flames" on his sword are ginger and three-dimensional. Again, I'm sorry. I should go home.

I can see him getting THE sword of mercy, but that's only if Cassandra doesn't get like a dragonbone Pentaghast family sword or something. I also sort of think that she'll be a two-hander because when you see the group of Seekers at the end of DA2 they all seem to have asala like swords.

I dunno, I mean as far as I'm aware Templars don't seem to have pets. So maybe it's not something he's ever thought about, or perhaps he'd like a Mabari, simply because he's Ferelden.

Yeah I mean sure, but she only really used two swords twice? In the beggining battle and then for a little bit during the battle with the Ogres and Golems the rest saw her with just the one which is why I said that, also I'm assuming that we aren't going back to the original weapons for everyone at least until I hear otherwise.
