There is a trope that I've seen and though it's understandable, I'm kind sick of seeing it and that is the Lyrium Withdrawal trope. When Cullen joinds the PC, in my mind, I'm thinking "Ok, she should know he'll need lyrium because Alistair told her about the addiction. She (if a mage) needs it too and her friends need it and she makes sure they have it, she can make sure he gets one little vial every day or so, can't she?"

But then BOOM! All of sudden, Cullen going into Lyirum Withdrawal is a big plot point and I'm like "WTF?! Why is this even here?" I guess to me, it just doesn't seem like it's realistic for it be that big a deal.

I know what you mean. Here, you buy little blue bottles of lyrium everywhere you go, and yet suddenly you can't find it for him. I'd like to think that templar lyrium is "different" but then the bottles described in Asunder were little blue glowing bottles.

It's quiet in here this evening! I need to think up some questions! Anyone got any Cullen related questions?

How about...

What fanfic tropes do you like?

Which ones do you hate?

And of the lot, which one do you think would transfer realistically into a game and why?

How's that? :D

Good evening all!

Let me just jump on in at this point:
- I think I may have had enough of the lyrium withdrawal for now. (Unless someone can figure out how to make it fresh.)
 - I think I've been more enjoying the stories where Cullen has less of an inner struggle and more of a get to it kind of guy.
- I prefer Cullen to be the assertive type rather than the wilted flower. And I don't care for the virgin stories.

I guess I'm waiting for a good "story" that happens to have it's steamy scenes. More than one steamy scene... cuz I'm trashy like that. lol

I think you may be my Dragon Age brain twin... :o  I think the Lyrium Withdrawal could be made so much better if one aspect was changed. For instance, every withdrawal yarn i've read includes every symptom a junkie can have; like hallucinations, lapses in memory, weakness shivers, etc. Just removing one or two - or having him suffer only one symptom at all - would make it refreshing, IMO. Instead, Cullen runs the gamut of everything, every time. I know he's hooked but lyrium isn't just a drug. It's special. :D

A struggling Cullen has his good points but balancing that with progress is key for me. I can't stand fics that wallow in a waffling Cullen. "I can't be with you!" then "Or maybe I can." then "No! I can't! I must uphold my vows!" then back to "Well you saved the world and have special permission..." only to be hit with "But it's soooo dangerous! What if I'm forced to kill you one day?! I can't do it!" to end with "Oh you're gonna leave me? But I L-L-LOOOVE YOOUUUU!"

I like a story with lots of steam in it too. I can totally get down with trashy.

I wish I could find the story, you'd all love it! It's also really sad because Amell put Alistair on the throne and had to break up with him and he's still in love with her even after she's gotten into a relationship with Cullen. I hated that bit lol.

One of the tropes I hate is where Amell gets pregnant with Cullen's baby, that one really annoys me just because it feels like a cheap plot device. I also have trouble believing that Cullen would actually leave the Order for a Mage without a decent reason. I've read a lot of fanfiction where they just get together without Cullen worrying about the consequences.

For me, the whole baby thing is fine if it's part of the story. When it's a natural consequence of the sexy times in the story, I'm all for it. I don't like it when Amell leaves the tower preggers and comes back with a kid Cullen didn't know he had. And the reasons I don't like are:

1) As far as canon has established, Culen and Amell didn't do anything. Ever. (Yes I know that's what fic is for but bear with me.)

2) Becoming a Grey Warden seems like it would be lethal to a fetus. At best, the child would become a Grey Warden in the womb and live like... what? 30 years?

3) I also find it unrealistic to be pregnant and fighting the good fight during a Blight.

4) Last, but not least, Amell coming back with a kid of Cullen's seems like a cheap Happily Ever After card. Meaning all the drama and issue-solving of having a relationship with a mage is taken away once he knows he has a kid with her. It's also like a Cullen-won't-go-crazy-and-leave-to-kill-mages mechanic. Even though it's not specific canon that he does AND it's been retconned, he still has some intense issues about mages. He won't have a relationship with one at the end of DAO. But a kid does away with that. I think it's a cop out. But that's me.

Thank you, Samara for this post.  I must admit, I haven been thinking about a lot of what you just mentioned--especially the whole fighting while pregnant--(but in the way I was thinking, he got her pregnant before the Joining).  That's what turned me off from the idea, though as Alistair mentioned, most of the Grey Wardens--that even had kids had them before joining the Wardens.  I think I remember reading about the Alistairs mother being a grey warden and still was able to bear King Maric's child.

I thought she joined the Wardens after she had the baby or was a new recruit and thus was untainted enough to conceive. Morrigan made it a point to say that Alistair was the best choice for her ritual because he was newer than Riordan and thus had the best chance of succeeding. She was also supposed to be using magic to help things along to boot.

So Amell getting pregnant in that year the Blight happened may have been possible in the beginning but it would have *probably* needed to happen after the Joining since it's so brutal and happen soon because if you romance Alistair, you don't get pregnant and the romance gets physical roughly halfway through the year. So all in all, it seems child conception declines severely by six months to a year after Joining and needs magical assistance to work. Since I think the Joining would kill an unborn fetus and by the time Amell returns to the tower it's too late to do without a lot of help, the whole Cullen baby surprise just doesn't seem realistic.

So Alistair is half elf? He doesn't look it, especially considering what Feynriel looked like.

I'm usually pretty forgiving.  The fics I'm talking about are the ones that make no progress, the ones that have five straight chapters dedicated to the characters going back and forth and sniping at one another and essentially creating arguments just to deliver empty drama. I'd be like "Brosca, Ohgren can you guys sit on those two until they're talking like adults instead of two-year-olds? Zevran, Leliana, you two point arrows at them and shoot the first one to raise their voice or get rude in the leg."

So... you're probably fine. I'll still read it. :D

According to the codex, offspring between elves and humans always look human. Plus DAO elves looked like human except they had pointed ears and were a little smaller in structure.

In DA2 elves look different and Feynriel did reflect some elven features but only enough to look a little... exotic. He still mostly looked human. Usually half-elven children are called "elf-blooded" because they resemble humans almost entirely.

Edit: Double post... oops. Sorry about that. 'Twas not intentional.

I just found this on a message board from '09. Might be crap but I figured I'd throw it out there:

*maybe spoiler?*

"I've ready the Calling and the book definitley ends with Fiona introducing Marichis secondson he never knew he had. Fiona is a Gray Warden. Maric was never aloud to raise him as he feared it would jeapordize Caidan's future rein on the throne. I believe that son is Alistair and he may not even know Fiona was his mother as she didn't raise him either."

This is all news to me! LOL

I'm reading the Calling right now, but it's been no secret that Grey Warden Fiona gets knocked up by Maric at the end. I understand that it has never been confirmed that the child is Alistair, tho. I've been hoping they'd address that point in Silent Grove. Incidentally, she's the same Fiona who shows up in Asunder.
