Dunno what to think now that he may have a Surname. My current story, I'm sticking with the no last name bit, since I don't want to rewrite it. I sorta like the idea of him coming from a working class family that is ridiculously proud of him. Then, his "issue" could be that he hid his breakdown from them and why he was sent off to Kirkwall.

My original canon was that he was abandoned as a baby/young child on the steps of the Chantry and didn't know who his family was. Of course, he could have still been abandoned/sent there but it doesn't have the same feel to it if he knows who they were... Unless they all died for some reason lol. So now, I don't really have any ideas about his background.

Whatever it is, I hope it isn't completely Idyllic. I'd grown rather fond of the idea that his life had been nothing but one bad experience, after another lol.

Oh, apparently Chris Priestly said that Dragon Age 3 is due next Fall at NYCC. That counts as an official statement, right?

I agree with R2M that it would be cool to see Cullen as part of a super cute family that's insanely proud of him.

Also, I can't explain why, but I somehow like the idea of him being raised by his grandfather. Maybe his parents were killed when the rebels pushed the Orlesians out of Ferelden, or... something.

Yeah, that used to be my headcanon as well, that he doesn't know his family or his name. Then he could have some identity issues as far as what he brings to a longterm relationship. Lacking that, he could still have issues with not knowing his family, even if he knows their name. It could be cool if he knows he's a Howe or a mac Tir or something, but only very distantly, or they're the black sheep of the family. But some of that is pretty similar to Alistair's backstory.

See, I'm thinking his family couldn't have been all that bad, since he kept the family name. If they'd been awful, then surely he'd want to ditch it and be known only as "Cullen". What I do wonder however, is if they've decided to give him a Surname because he'll know longer be a Templar. So he can't address himself as Knight-Captain, or any other rank, instead introducing himself kinda like this:

Cullen: "I am Kni... uh... Cullen *Insert Surname here*, former  Knight Captain of the Templar Order in Kirkwall."

Protagonist: ".. So you're the man held responsible for aiding the Champion in killing Knight Commander Meredith! They have a bounty on you're head, you know."

Cullen: *Pinches the bridge of his nose* "As if I could forget. My own men turned against me shortly after Hawke left... Eventually I was forced to seek refuge with the Divine when I refused to stand by the newly rebelled Templar Order."

That's a really great point (and good job on the nose pinch - LOL!). Wouldn't it me something if he was actually related to Evangeline? I think she mentioned a brother... maybe I'm making that up?

But he's Ferelden and she's Orlesian... Unless he's actually Orlesian, but had been in Ferelden for so long that he lost the accent?

Love that point, too, Lola. That easily could be the reason he now has a last name. And, according to his chr file and DG, the fact that he's Fereldan is one of the few things we actually know about his background. I think it would be quite a switch if he were Orlesian, unless it's rather distant. Being the brother of noblewoman seems a bit too close.

I was gonna say, what if he is the offspring of nobility, but decided to get away from his roots because he didn't enjoy the lifestyle... but then I realised that's Evangeline's back story lol.

If Cullen is a companion/LI then I'm really looking forward to the first ever play-through where I don't have a clue where I'm going or what to do first.

It's gonna feel so strange, knowing that he's in the game somewhere (because by then the DA team will have announced the LI's) but still have no clue at what point he'll show up. What will feel even more bizarre/exciting, is when we do finally find him and he's dressed in his new unique outfit and (if he isn't a Templar anymore) introduces himself as just his first name or his first name and Surname. No rank or title, no professional work ethic or work code to keep him at arms length... just simply Cullen.

Aaaaand I'm gonna be so gutted now if he isn't a companion/LI lol.

Yep. Just like Anders and Varric!!

And I totally feel the same way you do about playing the game and wondering when we're going to run into Cullen. I felt that way in ME3. Serious.nerdgasm.

I kinda ruined it for myself in ME3 because I read the entire leaked script. But I remember when I started playing DA:O and got really into the story once we got out of Lothering and I was like "OMG what should I do first?! OMG I can flirt with Alistair! OMG he's flirting back! OMG EVERYTHING IS SO AWESOME!!! EXCITEMENT OVERLOAD!!!" and then in DA2 I was like "OMG where the hell is everything? I'm lost! OMG Anders is in it?! OMG can I romance Varric?? OHMERGERD IT's CULLEN... Wow, he's gotten really hot and he's not completely mental!"

Admittedly I wasn't as excited playing DA2 as I was with DA:O. However, I can see myself getting ridiculously over excited when I start playing DA3, especially if Cullen is a romancable companion. Plus, by then the demo will be out so we'll have a rough idea of what the game will be like, mixed with the details they'll give us about the game, protagonist, etc.

... Hm, if DA3 is due to hit the shops in Fall next year, then I wonder if they'll hold out on announcing the romancable companions until nearer the time, rather than doing it for Valentines Day again.

What I want to know is how early we can hope to have the demo! If the game comes out around the fall, could we be getting one this summer? (that doesn't seem too far away!!)

I hope we'll be able to design our protagonist in the character creator like we could with the ME3 demo. It would be really handy to be able to dabble with the CC and then refine the look of the new PC we've made so that we can either take a screen shot and try to re-create it when the game actually comes out, or jot down the face-code and just input that into the game when it arrives. Although, I'm hoping that this time the demo won't throw us in at the very beginning of the game like it did with DA2 and ME3, because it kinda ruined the inital experience when I did finally play the game for the first time.

... I think I might actually wait for people to start talking about the demo on here and then decide if I want to try it out or wait until the full game and play it with completely fresh eyes.

Wow, Lola, you think you could really wait to play the demo? I know I'll be gnashing at the bit. I would also love a crack at the chargen before we play the full game. It takes me FOREVER to create my character, much to multiplayer-hubby's chagrin. :)

You have a stronger will than I do for sure. I have a tendancy to google that kind of stuff immediately, though this time around I really am hoping to go off strictly from the strategy guide.

... Well, I'd try lol. I managed to not read or play anything to do with ME3 until 2 weeks before the game came out, when I went stir crazy and read EVERY single bit of spoiler I could, then replayed the demo a million times lol. Speaking of demos, what was the DA:O demo like? Did that have the character creator in it? Also, where did you start from? The origins prologues?

I think the only demo was the character creator. You didn't actually get to play through any of the origins.
