I would actually be up for little drabbles... a full on fic is too much for me to tackle, but drabble prompts could be fun, if we're given like a week to do them.

I'm trying to flesh one out atm, so hard to do when we have no information concerning other companions or our PC.

True, but drabble prompts could be DAO or DA2 inspired too 8D I don't think I'd feel comfortable speculating about DA3.

Good point, though I'm pretty stuck on imagining Cullen always with our future protagonist as of late.

It's really tricky at the moment isn't it. I tried to write one not so long ago and ended up having to use Varric and a couple of NPC's that were in DA:O and DA2, just to put faces to names... then it all got deleted by my computer, so it didn't matter anyway.

I wonder if the fanfics that people have made about Cullen and his general personality will be anything like his personality in DA3 (if he's a companion). I mean, surely if we've kept to basic principle of his attitude/personality traits etc, then we can't be far wrong... Right?

Aw, that stinks. I think we've all looked far more into Cullen's personality than what is necessary (or normal Image IPB) I'm sure there will be some surprises and tweaks if he does end up being a companion, which is how I'd like it to be really. I want to be able to learn about him all over again.

It isn't too bad doing the dialogue thing without a background in mind. I tend to think "post-Asunder, assume human protagonist, no fixed gender, no fixed class, no fixed alliances" but then, the focus of the dialogue thing is very different from a narrative. For narrative, it's easier to let Cullen interact with a specific known NPC, like Isabela...

True, so long as he isn't completely unrecognisable as a character lol. I'm looking forward to the possibility of being able to bombard him with questions about things, since apparently they're going back to the DA:O way of asking the companions questions and stuff, rather than waiting for them to summon us. I really hope we're have the option to investigate the conversations futher, I missed that in ME3.

Omg ME3 irritated me so much with some of the companions conversations *cough*Kaidan*cough* There was definitely some preferential treatment when it came to certain people...aliens...whatever Image IPB

Back to Cullen, they have lots of material to cover when it comes to his past, his experiences, his beliefs. I mean, we may have the basics but a lot of it poses so many more questions. Such as the lyrium addiction, his roots pre-Circle. I really hope they evolve him as the strong man that we've gotten the chance to see glimpses of.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm concerned that conversations are gonna be significantly cut down in DA3, like all we'd be able to do is answer with the 3 choices of tone with the very occasional investigative route. I know they're spending more time on DA3, but I'm not sure that the decrease in interaction surrounding the companions personal stories through conversation in DA2 was entirely down to a time restrictions.

I know DG 'n' co have said that there was as much interaction in DA2 as there was in DA:O, but it didn't feel like it... maybe because in DA:O we could pretty much talk to your companions whenever we wanted and they'd give you feedback on the quests/situation so far if you asked them.

... Ah, I dunno, I guess I'm just worried that we'll finally get Cullen as a companion/LI but we won't be able to interact with him on the same sort of level that we could in DA:O with Alistair and the others or discuss his past/situation with him. The mans got a lot to answer for and I know that we're not the only ones who want answers lol.

Maybe I'm biased but I really feel like he should be one of the plot heavy companions.

Hmm I personally prefer the conversation mechanism of DA2 (three "tone" options versus no voice at all) but enjoy the freedom to chat with people whenever that you get in DAO. So I'd like to see a happy medium of the two.

More recently, DG discussed the differences between DA:O companion conversation and DA2 companion conversation. He said that in DA:O, we got to find out about the companions through questions and answers. Player-initiated dialogue, in other words. In DA2, we got to find out about the companions through three NPC-specific quests. He said that they're looking at compromises for DA3: a return of player-initiated questions and answers at the expense of some of the quest-related dialogue.

We got a taste of the DA2 system in Awakening. Remember that? You had to wait until the companion had something to talk about, you couldn't ask them about any old thing, and most of their actual interaction was triggered by clicking on inanimate objects.

It's kind of a pity that the expansion was cancelled. It would have given us some idea what to expect for Da3.

I didn't mind the DA2 option, because we still had the option to investigate... mostly with Fenris oddly enough. But I'm hoping that in DA3 we'll get to talk to our companions more frequently, in order to investigate more... if that makes sense.

I think maybe in DA3 the chance to question the arse off our companions would probably happen between quests, either back at "camp" (or whatever the housing set up is) or perhaps when they're chilling out in the city (ala ME3 on the Citadel). That seems like a pretty good compromise, since it would get a little annoying when you'd accidentally click on one of your companions and he/she would launch into a big conversation about something at the complete wrong moment lol.

I think maybe one big companion quest and the rest being conversation based would work well. Kinda like in ME2 where you had just the one sizable loyalty mission for each of them.

Oh man, this is the thing I dread with any sort of return to DA:O-style interactions. I realize only now that I don't think I ever risked snogging Alistair out in public because after a certain point I was too hesitant to trigger "big" conversations when I wasn't in camp. LOL  So, I think I'd also like an amalgam of the two approaches, but not like they did it in Awakenings. :shudder: There are still so many of those landmarks I never figured out who they were a trigger for... <_<

I will never, ever forget kissing Alistair on my first playthrough in the Redcliffe castle courtyard and watching an ogre belatedly stomp through the background. I've tried to recreate it every playthrough and never managed to get the timing right!!

I think they gave us a small glimpse into some possible new additions to DA3 in the MotA dlc. Like the stealth mode (which does need a bit of improvement), enemy battles that make use of the surrounding environment, and the clicking on notable landmarks that gave you a sweeping view of the area, whilst Hawke 'n' co have a brief discussion about their surroundings etc.

Yup, I think one big companion quest apiece would be ample, especially if it meant more "elective" dialogue. I don't play ME, so I don't know how they handled it there, but I do know that three big companion quests was a bit much. Don't get me wrong. I do like quests (why else would I play a RPG?). But after getting the "Talk to NPC" quest at the beginning of the Act, going to talk to the NPC, doing whatever main plot quests were necessary to unlock the companion quests, getting the second "Talk to NPC" quest to go find out about their companion quest, actually doing the companion quest, and then going back to the NPC for the debriefing, I was kinda tuckered out. I would rather have just stayed in camp, pelted them with questions, and then done one big quest in the last act.

But yeah, the Awakening model definitely had room for improvement. I hated trying to figure out which objects went with which NPC. And you were afraid to click on anything at times because unless you saved first, you were SOL if you hit the wrong number by mistake.

OMG I can't be this  But there was that time during the Urn of Sacred Ashes quest that I accidentally clicked on Wynne, and she saw fit to lecture me about my relationship with Zevran. Like, really Wynne, is this truly the time and place?!?!

LMFAO! I remember having the sex talk once in the middle of the deep roads, whilst standing in the middle of the Broodmothers corpse. That was tres romantic!

I remember Alistair giving my Warden his rose just before we paid our first visit to see Eamon on my first play-through, which actually seemed like pretty good timing.

LOL It sounds like we've all had that, "Not now, dear!" response to our DA:O companion! How funny would it be to add that as a deliberate banter into DA3.

Cullen: You know, I've been meaning to talk to you about that strange shield you have hung over your bed.
PC:...
Cullen: I'm always worried it's going to fall on us and--
PC: Cullen, honestly, are you talking about this now?
Cullen: Well...
PC: In the middle of the Fade, surrounded by demons and who knows what?
Cullen:... Well. I guess... Um, well. That last dream where we were in your, ahem, bedroom just made me think of it... That's all...
PC: ... /facepalm

I definitely think the "big talks" about something important, regarding a specific turning point in a companions personal story and/or the pivotal moment in a romance arc where the LI makes his/her feelings known to you should only trigger once you're back at the home hub/somewhere not covered in corpses. Ideally the environment in which said conversation happens would also be scene appropriate.

I mean, I adored Anders little out burst about laying awake for 3 years aching for Hawke every night... but witnessing that scene play out with the body of a dead woman that had been lying under a cloth in his surgery for Maker knows how long still in shot, was a bit of a mood killer. If I had created that scene, I would've had Bodahn tell Hawke that Anders wishes to meet with her/him at the docks/on the city walls/in the Chantry Gardens/whatever and then the scene would play out accordingly in a much nicer setting. I personally feel that ambiance/atmosphere is important when setting a scene and is integral when trying to conjure up certain emotions/feelings. You want to become engrossed in the moment, not thrown out of it due to the environment being incompatible with the actions playing out in front of you.

Maker, yes! If you do the Isabela romance, Bodahn and Sandal are in the background looking awkward for the first half of it. And if you're doing Fenris, it happens in the fricking foyer! At least with Anders, Hawke waits for him by the fireplace in his bedroom, so it's marginally less awkward, even if the room does share a wall with Mother's.

I headcanon that Anders wanders around the house absent-mindedly shedding clothing. And then he bumps into Leandra and wonders why he's in his smallclothes.

I figure that Thedosians spend a lot of time humming with their fingers in their ears.
