ArinTheirinCousland: I've always got the impression that they pick/create companions that will add something to the story/game, and the romance aspect is just an after thought. So, for example, If Cullen is a companion then it's because they feel he'll contribute an extra layer/dynamic to the story/game. If they then decide that he should be romancable then it's a secondary thought, after weighing up whether having him as a love interest would be unlikely/unneeded etc.

So people requesting/demanding they get a romancable female Qunari/Kossith is unlikely to happen if DG and co feel that it would be unlikely/stupid/perverted etc.

But anyway, that's why I've always said we should avoid squeeing and perving over Cullen in front of the devs, because it makes us seem like we only want him as a companion/LI so we can sex him up.

Also very good points! :police:

Shades_Of_Pale: Hopefully your opinion will be less bleak than mine.

R2s Muse: Yeah, I found it in the Kossith's thread. I understand he must be sick of reading all these requests... But.. well, I don't know, I'll reserve my opinion on rigidity in writing in a business such as this until after the game comes out.

LolaLei: That's exactly what Gaider said about the make up of companions as LI's. Spot on, really. I understand his way of thinking, but walking on eggshells hardly seems like the fair thing to do since we do pay "good $". Not saying people should be all "loud and demaning" about it either, though. But given the situation and after having lurked long enough, I agree with you that it's best not to let our fangirlism out too much in front of devs.

edit:
I love the banners: "so divine age"!

I think he's mainly trying to point out that the more people stomp their feet, shout, scream, demand and insult the devs the less likely it is that the fans demanding said companion/romance will be granted their wish. He's also pointing out that he finds it kinda disgusting/weird when people make a big deal about shagging the characters etc. Admittedly, I think our thread is one of the culprits that he's talking about, but hopefully he's aware that the majority of us are just messing around in here for the "lols".

Seriously.... the more the fist shaking happens, the more the devs will tell us to go "romance" ourselves. lol

Those hipster Cullens are hilarious! He looks like he should be sitting at a wall of NASA launch monitors circa 1962.

I think you would be happy if everyone had a german accent lol

Ha! Now that you mention it... maybe it's future!Cullen.

I've got no idea what Cassandra's accent is supposed to be. It's got to be some kind of Slavic though. I worked with a girl years ago that tha was Yugoslavian that sounded similar. What part of Thedas would that be? lol

DA TWO(!) strat guide? Hmm, wow, that's quite the find then... Kossith Seeker???  Wowee!!

seems I shoulda picked one of those up... I just wonder how useful they are when I see people citing errors so often... but if they've got lore stuff in them....

I also wonder if the new encyclopedia is a result of some of our responses to the monthly BW questions. I saw a lot of suggestions along those lines. That would be kinda cool...

You know Mike Laidlaw made me think with this tweet about Flemeth...

"Can’t over-use her, but yep, she’ll likely show up at some point."

Do you guys think that her showing up to much ruins her mystique? I mean in both games she has only showed up twice per game. I mean part of what we love about Flemeth is that crazy cooky old woman that with every appearance makes us ask WTF is going on with her? What does answering those questions mean to games?

Good point. I think ML is right that too much Flemeth is not a good thing. I think it would be sad for her not to show up at all, tho, so I guess I don't think a quick cameo in DA3 is too much. So long as it's still a random fortune cookie-style appearance.

Yeah, I'm just curious about what you think is fair revealing? I mean a big thing I saw people complaining about ME3 was the lack of closure and answering of questions. Would revealing Flemeth's secrets be to much or not revealing it and letting her be the Gandalf character to little?

Good question. I personally prefer that they never answer the questions of who/what Flemeth is. Unless it's "THE" big plot of the game to discover, I dunno, the nature of the Old Gods and that she's one of them. But I think things like "proving" the truth of Thedosian religious myths isn't something they should do. Flemeth is probably similar...

What do you think?

He's also pointing out that he finds it kinda disgusting/weird when people make a big deal about shagging the characters etc. Admittedly, I think our thread is one of the culprits that he's talking about, but hopefully he's aware that the majority of us are just messing around in here for the "lols".

Honestly, I don't think they're going to go *either* way with the romances because of fan demands. If the character is already in the game and if he or she has good romance potential, it happens. If the character is not in the game or does not have good romance potential, making noise for or against isn't going to change anybody's mind. Take Cole for example. Good potential as a companion, so it would not surprise me to see him in the game. Limited romance potential for a number of reasons. I would not expect him to be romanceable. Now consider Cullen. Good potential as a companion, no glaring reasons why he wouldn't be romanceable. If he were in the game as a companion and if he were not romanceable, it would be because they had other ideas they liked better, not because some people in a fan thread carried on. We aren't even close to being important enough to have an impact one way or another. Which, if you think about what some of the other threads are advocating, is probably for the best. So yeah, DG probably does get frustrated and I don't blame him for posting a politely worded version of "You people are freaks," but the writers have their own ideas about which characters they want to do. They aren't going to change their minds because some people get carried away.

Besides, I don't think anybody in this thread is making demands. It's more that we appreciate the character and spend a lot of time expressing how pleased we would be if we found out that he was in the game (and a LI, depending on your preferences). Some of the people in this thread aren't interested in his romantic inclinations at all. About the only thing we agree on is that he is an interesting character we would like to get to know better. And if we do feel that way, they have only themselves to blame for making him interesting in the first place.

Yeah proving/dissproving those plots are kind of end of franchise we can't get anything else out of it kinds of things if they should do it all. I'd prefer if they left her the permanent OMG WTF is she? I mean Morrigan and some obscure text from an ancient tome should be the only ones who know anything about Flemeth let alone believe she exists although it seems she is becoming well known.

If that's not your stance, or why you
want the romance, then great. You've nothing to worry about, so long as
you think about what you're saying. That is what I see in a number of
these requests, however... so to that I'll simply say that if you're
expectation is that we developers should be thrilled to become your
virtual pimps, that's simply not the case. The fixation on romance
displayed in these forums is borderline distasteful as it is, and
certainly not limited to requests for female qunari-- I'd rather not
encourage such requests if people actually believe they'll have results
that aren't the opposite of what they intend
.

Insult aside, I wonder if this gives us a clue as to whether he authorized Cullen as LI or if I'm reading into the whole "the more they push, the less I give in".

 Maybe I'm just too tired.

I may be biased... okay I am biased, but I think we've been pretty good about not making demands. Other than keeping to this thread, we haven't really gone out of our way to "demand" Cullen. Yes, when a thread pops up asking what we want in a romance or who we would like to see as a companion and in the story, we have mentioned Cullen on all those fronts because we think his story could be really interesting and a potential romance could be really amazing. We kept our public display of Cullen appreciation to the times the devs have asked for the fans' input.

So while we have made our support of Cullen known, I don't think we've been as annoying as all that. We haven't started any demand threads and we haven't gone raging "If Cullen's not an LI, I won't buy the game!" We haven't been insulting someone else's preferences of other characters or all gone demonic about defending Cullen to the naysayers. When they ask why we want him, we tell them. When they generalize us and say we just want him for his looks, we've been quick to refute that because it's not fair for anyone to generalize us - or anyone else for that matter - and dismiss our points about Cullen's potential impact on the story just to be able to say the crap they do. That would be them trying to make us look pathetic and that goes against DG's usual attitude about fair and free self expression here.

If he's that annoyed about fans' appreciation of romances, I can only think it's because of the sheer quantity of demands along this vein and the flame wars that have cropped up as a result. There have been a lot of threads that have popped up, the subject line of which is deliberately worded to grab the devs' attention. Then these threads typically go on to rage, rant, demand, or -my personal fave- try to logic the reasons their request makes sense over the devs' decision. Pointing out that you think the devs made a mistake because they didn't do what you wanted is arrogant in the extreme. It's a fine line between saying what you think a character could bring to a story and downright dissing the devs' hard work. I know I'd get sick of it after a while.

I hope it's not us specifically that he's annoyed with. If it is, then we'd apologize but I've seen plenty of reasons besides us that could have made him feel this way. What we do in here is in good fun and for the lols which is why we keep it in here. I prefer to think that's a good way to handle our fangirling, not bad. ^_^ Making threads that shout "CULLEN COOKING PANCAKES ON HIS ABS MUST HAPPEN IN DA3!!!!" would be the sort of thing we don't want to do. ;)

Well put berelinde. I enjoy speculating about that development of Cullen as a character, as well as other aspects of the game. No matter what I think though, even though I'm a loyal consumer, I know that the devs are making their games telling the stories that THEY want to tell. Maybe they come into the forums sometimes and get inspired by all our crazy theories, maybe they laugh, or maybe they get grossed out. In the end though, they're not going to make major changes based on any random person asking them to. Even if having a certain companion would be really cool to play alongside, it's just not going to be as good as if it's one that actually fits with the story.

My hopes are still for engaging friendships and romances, and decisions that actually matter to the story. Like Samara Draven was suggesting that our actions will close off some major paths and open up others. It would be amazing to get a significantly different perspective from class to class and certain major decisions, not just the odd tiny dungeon or fetch quest. More replay value = more fun IMO.
