I hope it's not us specifically that he's annoyed with. If it is, then we'd apologize but I've seen plenty of reasons besides us that could have made him feel this way. What we do in here is in good fun and for the lols which is why we keep it in here. I prefer to think that's a good way to handle our fangirling, not bad. ^_^ Making threads that shout "CULLEN COOKING PANCAKES ON HIS ABS MUST HAPPEN IN DA3!!!!" would be the sort of thing we don't want to do. ;)

Well said, as always, Samara!

I will only add that not only is a "CULLEN COOKING PANCAKES ON HIS ABS MUST HAPPEN IN DA3!!!!"  thread anathema to our normal way of doing things here... it's just downright unsanitary!! I  mean... seriously. Who's going to eat those besides Barkspawn? ;)

I understand his way of thinking, but walking on eggshells hardly seems like the fair thing to do since we do pay "good $". Not saying people should be all "loud and demaning" about it either, though. But given the situation and after having lurked long enough, I agree with you that it's best not to let our fangirlism out too much in front of devs.

I think he's mainly trying to point out that the more people stomp their feet, shout, scream, demand and insult the devs the less likely it is that the fans demanding said companion/romance will be granted their wish. He's also pointing out that he finds it kinda disgusting/weird when people make a big deal about shagging the characters etc. Admittedly, I think our thread is one of the culprits that he's talking about, but hopefully he's aware that the majority of us are just messing around in here for the "lols".

Honestly, I don't think they're going to go *either* way with the romances because of fan demands. If the character is already in the game and if he or she has good romance potential, it happens. If the character is not in the game or does not have good romance potential, making noise for or against isn't going to change anybody's mind. Take Cole for example. Good potential as a companion, so it would not surprise me to see him in the game. Limited romance potential for a number of reasons. I would not expect him to be romanceable. Now consider Cullen. Good potential as a companion, no glaring reasons why he wouldn't be romanceable. If he were in the game as a companion and if he were not romanceable, it would be because they had other ideas they liked better, not because some people in a fan thread carried on. We aren't even close to being important enough to have an impact one way or another. Which, if you think about what some of the other threads are advocating, is probably for the best. So yeah, DG probably does get frustrated and I don't blame him for posting a politely worded version of "You people are freaks," but the writers have their own ideas about which characters they want to do. They aren't going to change their minds because some people get carried away.

Besides, I don't think anybody in this thread is making demands. It's more that we appreciate the character and spend a lot of time expressing how pleased we would be if we found out that he was in the game (and a LI, depending on your preferences). Some of the people in this thread aren't interested in his romantic inclinations at all. About the only thing we agree on is that he is an interesting character we would like to get to know better. And if we do feel that way, they have only themselves to blame for making him interesting in the first place.

Yeah I think we'll loud but pretty harmless, I'm sure other Cullen fans tend to make us look bad, but even if they didn't I don't think DG stops by here enough to see that we're just doing it for the lols and that they're are us the "elite"B)^_^Cullen fans and the fangirly Cullypie :P fans....very different^_^.

I agree with you though no fan has that much pull and the best we can do is make a dev think differently about a certain character/function and even then that's with a lot of thought out well explained posts and er tiptoeing through a mine field.

Agreed. It's unlikely that they'd give us Cullen just because we've been well behaved lol, but we stand more of a chance than if we were to go in there all guns blazing, reeling off a list of demands. If he is a companion/LI, it'll be because DG 'n' co think it's a good idea, all we can do is encourage that thought lol.

I get that Mr. Gaider is frustrated, but when he went into the female kossith LI thread and accused people of fetishizing, I thought that was just not very nice. And I sure hope those most recent comments are not from that same thread. Have y'all read through that thread? I mean before he posted his comments. There was nothing rude or demanding in it. There were no naked sexy pictures posted of female kossith. There was just a group of DA fans talking about how excited they were about DA3 and how much they'd love to romance a female kossith. Kind of like this thread, really.

I just am confused as to how DG wants us to regard the romances. Are we even supposed to enjoy them? If I get a warm fuzzy feeling and smile real big when Fenris kisses my Hawke, am I some sort of disgusting pervert? It really confuses and upsets me that he says these things.

That's something I don't understand about him either. I mean, why put romances in the game at all if he doesn't want fans squeeing and talking/writing naughty things about them?

This is a very good point, and MMG, my understanding from Arin T. Cousland's follow up post was that it was from that very same kossith thread. Indeed, it's hard to know how to react. Beyond the romances, I think we get the same responses sometimes regarding how much we happen to like the characters. Strange to discourage fans from liking your characters when character-driven storytelling is what BW RPGs are known for...

And, wracking my brain, would you all say we mostly just get this from DG, or do you sometimes get this sense from the other writers/devs as well?

This is the first I've seen any dev react so negatively to fans loving the romances they write.

Oh, ouch. I thought the Kossith LI thread was rather civil too, apart from the occasional twit that dropped by to say that everyone in that thread had a "giant fetish". >/

And I've finally finished catching up, and I'm now SO EXCITED.

I think he wants fans to enjoy them as fictional characters not as fantasy wish fulfilment. I doubt he cares if we write naughty things about them. Some of it might creep him out, but then, some of it would creep out any sane, well-adjusted adult. But some of it is actually pretty good. Some of it explores aspects of the characters that are hinted at in game, but never really developed. And some of it simply expands on the characters as they are, filling in the gaps in the story or retelling parts of it from a different point of view. As a writer, DG might actually enjoy that, seeing the life the characters take on once they're out of his hands.

The characters in a game are kind of like a box of crayons. On their own, they're pretty, with their vivid colors and limitless potential, but the best way to enjoy them is to take them out and use them. Sure, they give you a giant coloring book to for that purpose, but there's nothing that says you can't draw on other surfaces or scribble outside the lines. Taking that metaphor to its inevitable conclusion, fanfic is probably the literary equivalent of drawing on the walls.

I know; I get that! Of course he doesn't want people creeping on his characters. But that wasn't even happening in the female kossith LI thread. People seemed very civil and just genuinely excited about DA3.

I personally have always been excited at the thought of a kossith LI. I mean sure I find them hot! But David seemed to imply that because I think they are nice lookin fellas that I want him to write me up some disgusting pornographic kossith love scene. Um, no thanks! How about the deep and emotionally rewarding romances that you USUALLY write, David? (And the rest of the lovely writer's pit). Why is it wrong to want a kossith (or dwarf, or whatever) as a LI? With the anticipation that the romance will be as wonderfully written as all the previous ones have been?

This comment by DG is rather interesting:

"My point is that if your objective is to make us want to create such a romance, then espousing an interest that obviously goes no deeper than their race isn't the way to do it. That's no different than someone asking for a big, muscular male character to romance, or "a dwarf"... or saying "I'd like a black woman to romance."

In fact, I'd use the word "romance" rather loosely in that context, because what you're really asking for is a sex scene. And if you think BioWare romances are all about getting it on with a character of your choice, that's great-- but it wouldn't entice me or any other writer to want to make it happen for you. If the alternative is someone accusing me of being prudish or "arty", then so be it. Having the romance be reduced to the equivalent of some body parts is about as artless as I can imagine."

I think basically what he's saying is, if you have a real interest in the character beyond "phwoar, sexy looking man/woman/Elf/Dwarf/Kossith/Dragon/Etc" then that's cool, but if you're in it solely for the ****** 'n' arse (so to speak) then they're less inclined to ever let you romance said character.

He has said that, while they're not a main goal whenever they go to write a Dragon Age game, he knows we like them and that's why they're there. Since he's personally responsible for some of the romantic content, perhaps he feels a bit perved on by the fans? Maybe? I haven't been inside the female kossith thread because that's not my thing but if it's not all that terrible, I see no reason for DG to be up in arms about it. Perhaps it's too weird for him? I dunno.

Thus far, this situation and David's comments seem like he's kind of snapped a little. Like maybe he's tired of all the romance talk and that day was a bad day and he lost his cool a little bit and took it out on a thread that, while not the main culprit, is still a romance thread. It's not very nice of him if the thread was undeserving of such treatment, that's for sure. To him, the romance stuff is a dead horse we all keep beating but when we see a new option, it's fresh and exciting for us again. Perspective's a b!tch like that. I think he's begun to see the romances as a burden because: A) He's not %100 comfortable with them and B) He's tired of the fuss they stir up in the fans - and let's face it: They do. We're just one of the mudmonkeys down in the muck, he's the one at the top who's getting all of the mud flung at him. Anyone would get sick of it eventually. It's not an excuse; it just makes him human. That's what I think anyway. Thus I will continue to think of David as normal and fallible as the rest of us and not take his words personally.
