Could be, but don't forget how dangerous regular lyrium is too. Even the dwarves get messed up by it, and they're practically immune. The templars probably start out small and increase their dosage over time. Same with the red stuff, maybe?Danny Boy 7 wrote...

Anyway, Cullen!
Had something on my mind today. We've talked about red lyrium before, and maybe you guys are faster on the uptake than I am, but today I realized something...
if red lyrium is innately evil or corrupted, would taking it not only make a Templar go nugsh*t insane, but could it give him/her evil versions of the classic Templar abilities?
For instance.... could there be something like an UNholy smite?
Meredith was able to do some pretty crazy stuff toward the end, and she wasn't even ingesting red lyrium. Granted, part of that was probably due to the idol's powers and not just the lyrium itself, but still.
What do you guys think?
I always imagined that red lyrium would super charge templar abilities and make it so that certain skills are more damage based rather than nullifying abilities. You know you take them and they hurt the mage rather than simply taking away his/her ability to cast.
From Meredith's display ingesting Red lyrium might kill someone as we've seen what it's liquid/airborne form can do to someone. I imagine it gets inhaled, but in small inconsistent doses is harmless to humans and elves, but for dwarves and possibly templars it can completely destroy them within days.

Maybe lyrium comes in different flavors because it affects different kinds of creatures. Non-mage humans and elves can use blue lyrium with minimal negative effects (addiction aside). Unless it hits the bloodstream, dwarves can ignore it completely. Maybe Fade creatures can use red lyrium? Non-mage humans and dwarves are profoundly affected by red lyrium (but really only Meredith, Bartrand, and Varric). I wonder if mages can use red lyrium like non-mages use blue...

Yeah, it's fun to toss ideas around but really, we know a lot more about the idol than we actually do red lyrium. I keep getting my information crossed from one to the other thinking they're the same and they're not.
Really, the only things we know for sure about red lyrium are:
1. It's rare and hadn't been seen by most folks in a loooooong time
2. It's found in a deep and largely forgotten Thaig
3. It was an ingredient in the idol that messed up Meredith, Varric, and Bartand
4. Sandal was able to manipulate a piece of it into a powerful enchantment
... yep. If there's more, feel free to add to the list. But I think LolaLei's always been right -- red lyrium will be a feature in DAIII, so speculating is fun.

Non-mages can already deal directly with demons. According to her daughter Flora, Lady Hariman was no mage, but she communicated regularly with a desire demon, even offering her children to it. I wonder if they were possessed or just went a little bonkers for a while. Am I the only one who kinda wishes that we'd gotten a chance to talk to... er... Mr. "Felicitate Me!" rather than Flora after Repentence? How do you show your face again after that one?LolaLei wrote...
I think the effect of the red lyrium ingestion would be slower, over the course of months, so that gradually our encounters with them would get more bizarre and dangerous. It makes you wonder if Templars could be possessed by more powerful demons whilst using red lyrium because it's stronger, therefore creating a stronger pull to the demons within the Fade.

I think LL means she's wondering if taking red lyrium would make Templars almost as likely candidates for possession as mages, since it would possibly give them a magical connection we haven't experienced in the lore before. Is that right, LolaLei?berelinde wrote...

Varric wanted to keep the piece of the idol that Bartrand still had. He goes a bit Gollum-esc, but you can let him keep it and it gives him a power boost (or something), or you can take it away from him and tell him that you don't want him to succumb to the same fate. If you choose the latter then Sandal will turn it into one of his enchantments for you.

Yeah that's pretty much what I meant, except that the demons that would be drawn to the Templar on red lyrium would be stronger than your average ones, or become stronger due to the red lyrium.
It'd be interesting if red lyrium made the Templars into even more tempting targets than the mages.
What a freaking game-changer!
Plus, it would definitely force the Chantry to see things in a new light, once they were the danger to society instead of the mages.
Hmm... this might be my new favorite hope for DAIII!!!!
