Do you think the developers will allow Hawke to be a leader to the mages?

I don't mind them getting further away from modern ethical mainstreams, so long as they do it with a bit more consistency, and go in depth and not resort to bombastic exaggerations.

To be honest, I never understood how DA2 was supposed to make magic look more dangerous. What Connor did single handedly was much more dangeorus than anything the incompetent lunatic mages of DA2 ever did.

I always thought it would have been nice to have an achievement opposite Viscount for those of us who refuse to side with the templars Image IPB  Unfortunately though, I got the distinct feeling throughout the game that the devs were trying to make us anti mage, so I cannot see them giving Hawke the opportunity to be any sort of mage champion / hero / leader ...

of course. Everyone sided with the mages by default in Origins, and we can't have that now can we? Mages are kittens that will explode if you touch them or give them a cookie! Image IPB

You know I'm sure that would lead to a shortage of kittens somehow Image IPB

It's really their own fault though that siding with the mages in Origins became the standard. They made it so that by doing so you had no repercussions.

See, I don't get this.  Nowhere in Origins did I feel like I was siding with anyone against anyone (except maybe darkspawn), I certainly didn't see it as a siding with mages against anyone.  For me saving the circle just seemed to be the right thing to do, even Greigor was relieved to see Irving alive.. *shrugs*

If they want people to side with the Templars as much as the mages, they need to portray both sides fairly and accurately. Show the good and the bad on both sides in equal measure. If they wanted to say that the Circle had a lot of bad eggs, then show the bad eggs within the Circle (namely the Resolutionists who are doing what they're doing not because Meredith caused it, but because they want to topple everything). The game should've showed the increasing tensions by introducing the Resolutionists in Act 2.

Agreed!!

The Ethereal Writer Redux wrote...
Likewise, the Templars need to be shown accurately as well. Show the good Templars within Kirkwall's tyrannical rule. All we saw were Thrask and Keran, and the former is killed because the plot demanded it. The latter can be killed by Hawke.

You forgot Emeric!

I could go in more depth, but I've done that so many times on these forums it's getting tiresome Image IPB. Other people can do it if they want and I'll just nod my head and post a clapping gif.

Lol, it is getting that way

I wouldn't mind being made leader of the mages if the mages actually consulted with me and listened to my advice before taking action. So, ask Anders what he is really doing with that stuff we collected? Bearing in mind that up to now I have been fully supportive and he says mages look to me for leadership, I would expect an honest answer. Discover it is a bomb that he intends planting in the Chantry. Suggest planting under Meredith's office instead - even offer to keep her talking while he does so. Once in place, we walk out and boom - mages are the heros of everyone in Kirkwall. Except that Templars still feel obliged to attack us for appearances sake, possibly encouraged by the Chantry to do so, we fight back and become inspiration of mages throughout Thedas.
Not everyone would agree with this plot line but it is an example of how a leadership role ought to work.

Dragon age 2 not being 'epic' was not the reason it was disappointing. . .people really need to stop conflating those two issues.

Maybe it was for some?
Not saying that I found it dissapointing for not being epic, in fact I don't really feel like it was dissapointing at all, but I can imagine some people feel that way.

I would argue that there is something wrong with those people, and that they should probably stop playing RPGs.

RPG's are about different stories leading to a conclusion, some of those stories, are small scale, and some of those stories are larger scale.

If every RPG was some sort of LOTR epic, then the genre would become a parody of itself.  There are only. . .so many ways one can save the world.

They could have been involved in a sidequest or sub-plot, but they were not and their presence or absence is completely inconsequential minus gold and xp. It's like saying looting is a proactive decision.

Maybe have Hawke overhear about the increase in crime from the citizens, and when you go into the areas at night instead of the companions saying "Go kill some baddies!", Hawke says "Time to clean up!".

Or have an entire quest tree where Hawke asks Aveline if there's anything he can do to make Kirkwall a better place, and she says there's been an increase in crime lately. Then Hawke can either accept or refuse.

I'd also keep the Friends of Red Jenny rewards.

Or have the option to side with them, like in Awakening.

Yea, I want the option to make a crime boss Hawke.

When I started act 1, I thought maybe I would have that option.  It would have made sense, given how you work your way into the city.

I would have loved to be able to become a crime boss, Especially given that Amaranthine's shipping is being attacked by pirates. It would be cool to take over a few piracy operations, and then have the option to direct their attacks elsewhere, like Orlais or something. And get more rich and powerful doing so.

To the question: "Do you think the developers will allow Hawke to be a leader to the mages?" No. No I don't think they will.

Who didn't play the first parts of Act 1 and think "Man, I might be a crime lord!" I was excited about the prospect. One flashforward later and there's just one side quest left. The most infuriating being the smuggler one which ends with a nice "I might have more work for you" thing that you never follow up on again.

Hopefully, but that's just as bad. That's something that should've been included in the main game itself.

. In this he/she is a more normal person than is typically found in a game.

I do not have interest in playing an "average Joe". Or even a slightly above average Joe. That's what I played the Sims for. If I am going to play an RPG, I want to play someone who can be played to be unusual or unique in some signifigant manner. Whether they start out that way, or become that way, isn't that important. They can be born as normal as anyone else, but it is their unusual persona,  development, and drive that sets them apart, makes them interesting. "Normal" charcters don't interest me in an RPG, because I am surrounded by normal, everyday people, and am a normal, everyday person myself. I don't need a fantasy video game for that.

Given the character and plot/story writing in DA2, I found nothing particularly exceptional or unique about Hawke, or Hawke's personality/mindset that would set him/her apart from any other mage/merc, or guy on the street.  And when selecting a leader for something as big as a revolution, it is the exceptional people that stand apart from the rest on many levels that I look for, for such an important role. And other than being able to rack up insane body counts. Hawke is not that exceptional to me. Your milage may vary, of course. Everyone's does.

Can't say I'm surprised though, after EA took over Maxis the Sims main game content seemed to shrink, then came all the stuff packs and 'items' from the store....
