Good review, I agree with you on the persuasion aspect, in particular its something Bioware should look at strongly at because IMHO it fits in with their philosophy of game design.

Well, first of all, I can successfully play different kinds of character-concepts I have come up with, and the game actually does recognize to some extent these RP-choices without outright contradicting my concept. Tailoring a pre-determined character to my liking based on the character-concept. I can and do make gameplay-decisions for RP-reasons.

To me that just sounds like altering your play style eg. a no kills play through, which IMHO doesn't make it a role playing game. I can do that with FPSs like say the Far Cry games. I don't see why you can't do that in DA2 either.

I'm not saying its a bad game, I like it a lot, to me it just feels like a shooter with some rpg elements.

It has choices though. Leveling up alone doesn't make an RPG (well I guess it does but the best RPG's combine dialogue, choices and leveling up). I guess it's all down to opinion in the end. I find Role Playing means "playing the role of someone else" and in this statement, one could make out most games to be RPG's but I see it as meaning assuming the role of someone you can influence and you can influence Adam Jensen alot.

There is  something very wrong about the enviornmental art work and architecture in this game. It is too vertical. It is almost a game breaker. It is poorly designed. This is why I moan about FPS the camera screws up perspective. Why are the streets and pathways so narrow it is very poorly designed. This needs to be compensated for.  This needs to be fixed.  Why are doors the wrong size? The proportions of this game are wrong. Shame on the enviornmental artists. Shame! This sticks out really bad. Open up these enviornments and fix the proportions. Detroit is totally wrong the scale is all wrong.

Finally beat the game. Overall I really enjoyed my experience playing Deus Ex: HR although I must admit I love the concept and the ideas behind the game more than I enjoyed the game itself.

I watched all 4 endings, they were a bit of dissapointmnet. They were very good at discussing a lot of themes that were brought up in the game world but I was kind of hoping for somthing more personal to Jenson or say for example you dont blow up the base ( regardless of which of the 3 other endings you pick ), what happens to Darrow, Sarrif and Taggart and I was a bit disspaointed that the game never goes there.

First things first: the graphics are way too dated. Character textures were especially bad, since you had to look at them close-up every time you went into a dialogue. Also the lip animations were just horrendous. Also the animations when doing take-downs; I found it hilarious that both Jensen and the other guy would immediately change position and poses when the take-down sequence started. They could've done a much better job making the transition more seamless.

I also didn't like the story that much either. Besides being massively predictable (I won't spoil anything for anyone here but honestly if I just flat out told everyone all the major plot developments it wouldn't tell them anything they couldn't figure out after 2 hours of playing the game), none of the characters in the game were genuinely likeable. Jensen is basically a robot the entire game (if you thought Shepard was emotionless in ME2, you've clearly never experienced Adam Jensen), and the rest of the cast were pretty one-dimensional. There's almost no character development at all for any of them. All of this meant that I simply didn't give a crap about any of them. To make matters worse, none of the plot decisions you make in the game matter all that much. At best they will result in different rewards at the end of the quest and perhaps making another quest down the line slightly easier.

The only reason this game is at all salvageable is the gameplay. It's kind of fun to sneak around and despite the horrible animations, it's satisfying to stalk enemies and perform take-downs. The shooter aspect is less satisfying, mostly because enemies have horrible AI and they're all basically identical, leaving no variation (not to mention you actually get punished XP-wise for killing people rather than sneaking around). The hacking minigame is also pretty fun at first because it's actually kind of challenging, though this slowly disappears over the game as you gain more augs/software.

The one feature that stands out in this game was the social battle. I like how you actually had to listen to what people are saying to you in order to pick the right dialogue option to persuade them. It's a lot more satisfying than ME's paragon/renegade system where you just click a blue or red dialogue option and suddenly your guy knows exactly what to say.

TLDR version: I had high expectations for this game, but it disappointed me with a lackluster story, one-dimensional characters, and mediocre shooter gameplay. The stealth aspects of the game are decidely better, and the social battles, though few and far between, make for some tense and exciting moments.

Ok, I did not follow the thread but after spending 20some hours I got mad...

the game looks seriously bad in graphics departement. I have no idea how is this possible except for the fact it was ported with no tweaks from the console...dammit.
I just watched a vid comparing PS3/PC graphics and it... shows almost no difference.

I enabled DX11 and tessalation and it turns out to be just a freaking gimmick! It looks bad despite the advancement it the tech field and whatnot.
Was Detroit hit by a pandemic so terrifying that it swept almost all citizens? Was it the same with Shanghai?
The streets of london in 28 days later look more lively for ****s sake!
Was it not for fun augs/takedowns/gadgets and somewhat captivating story... or is it just my nostalgia and cyberpunk addiction speaking?

Its 2011 here, and even DX9 can look better than this. It's like Dragon Age 2 and it's hi res pack and DX11 again... :/ fu©k me for having faith in the developers...

EDIT:
I forgot to praise the design. Marvelous in my opinion. It looks really good. But the enviro which is empty just spoils the whole thing.

Oh, and another: I expected an informational noise, streaming back and forth, hectic data running around, transmissions, lots of people, crowds (even as a backdrop or background or whatever), clubs, air traffic, maglev stations and rails. In other words a city that does not sleep.
the hive club...please. What a sorry-assed imitation of a club is this?
Where is the CYBERPUNK vibe?
Nowhere to be found

EDIT 2
Boss fights...some claim 'em to be hard. :blink:how? I play on normal - focus on hacking and stealth and the Big Guy and Fast Chick went down in moments. That taser gun is a miracle among all the fancy weapons. And the EMP granade.
Besides upgraded weapons like assault rifle and revolver do help. But not necessary.
Almost no effort from my part. I dont even bother killing most of the nooks, I just double-takedown them and dissapear.

BTW I came by accident to a funny discovery. Augument so you can lift heavy objects, hack a comp responsible for a turret, set it to enemy and take the turret with you (yes, you can lift it now). Mows down all the enemies in seconds.
I did it for fun though, no fun to really play this way.

...

but I still like the game, fu©kin' shoot me

Mass Effect is FAR from perfect.

And may I say that the level design in Deus Ex Human Revolution is SUPERB? And this is coming from a game-design (level-design) student (yes, I'm studying to become a level-designer myself).

Sure, Deus Ex HR's level design isn't perfect, but it's miles ahead of Mass Effect's level design.

Seriously: the level design in Deus Ex (HR) > the level design in Mass Effect (2).

Perfect level design in ME? The last time I checked the level design was all about "Oh. The long, straight tunnel leads into an open area with crates and other cover. Where is the enemy?"

:D

Indeed. At least the level design in Deus Ex is dynamic and kinda realistic. Mass Effect is completely unrealistic and it's basically just a narrow path from point A to B. If the level-design in Mass Effect would be any narrower it would become an on-rails shooter. :D

Also, the level-design in Mass Effect is very forgettable. For example, the prison where Jack was kept. I really don't exactly remember what the prison looked like and from my memory I can't recall if it even looked like a prison or not. From what I remember, that level didn't look like a prison at all, more like a warehouse. But come to think of it, EVERY level in Mass Effect 2 looks like a goddamn warehouse full with crates 'n stuff. Seriously, I got sick and tired of all the warehouse-look-a-like levels in Mass Effect 2.

My main gripe with Mass Effect - The level design and how little player agency it offers. If they're not gonna add more options to accomplishing an objective, at least add some mini-games (Planet scanning is not a mini-game!)

I miss the good old days when shooters weren't so linear. Does anyone remember the original Goldeneye on the N64? Now that game was awesome! An amazing non-linear shooter!

When I first played Deus Ex: Human Revolution, for the first time since 12 years, I had this amazing feeling again!

Deus Ex: Human Revolution reminded me of the good old days, when we had Goldeneye and Perfect Dark to keep entertain us. And that is a HUGE compliment to Eidos Montreal. Deus Ex: Human Revolution gave me this epic feeling of nostalgia. It felt like a true Deus Ex game and at the same time it reminded me of the good old days when shooters were still awesome!

Yep. My only gripes with the game are auto regenerating heatlh (it was an aug in the first game), and boss fights that are obligatory. You should be able to convince them to join your cause or not to engage you in combat.

Otherwise, my GOTY so far.

Jep, my GOTY too. At first, I decided that The Witcher 2 deserved GOTY. But now I decided that Deus Ex: Human Revolution earned it.

Also, I didn't mind the auto-heal. I'm just incredibly happy With Deus Ex: Human Revolution. It is sooooooo much better than Deus Ex: Invisible Wars.

I really enjoyed reading this. Mostly because I agreed with everything you said. I loved the gameplay, but wished there was more story. I feel like I didn't get to know Jensen as much as I wanted. He is such a compelling and relatable character. Also. I love Zelazny!! His sidequest was my favorite moment of the game because his character was so well developed even in the short time he was given. I wish he could have been a potential ally or something because after his speech I was completely sold to his cause!

no replayability at all. Not one reason to do so. All you have to do is watch four endings loading your last save. A shame really.
It seems all you get from making a decision in a game is a fu©king achivement.

I tried to be stealthy and almost all enemies were put unconscious. I killed fewer than 10 people in the game. I thought this will be reflected in man vs machine personality departement... I was wrong. which is the biggest dissapointement for me. So much talk about beaing a souless machine and all, then the dialogue options to choose from weather you welcome/hate/or adapt to the augumented new you/Jensen. And at the end of the day it has no weight, meaning or trace in the gameplay/story.

To assure high replayability factor the decisions making spanning throughout the game should affect the ending choices.

No resolution with dr Reed or Malik was a letdown.

I installed that yesterday and WOW it looks good. There are a few glitches here and there, and a few interfaces look weird, for example when watching from a security camera. But overall it's great! The lighting is far more realistic, but if you prefer the golden-hue style of the game, don't bother, this mod pretty much removes that. Personally I like the changes. Best place to compare with the vanilla game are Jensen's Apartment, and at TYM above the Pangu.

When I have time I will definetly do a 2nd playthrough with this, once 'The Missing Link' is released.
