It's about time that I give up video games. Frankly, I don't like most of the new stuff that has come out and my life is getting to be too busy anyway. However, video games had always been a pretty big hobby for me, so I want to go out on a good note. I'm about to get some time off for a medical leave, and I thought I would spend it taking another run through either the BG or IWD series, though I'm having trouble deciding which. Actually, I also considered NWN2, which I've never played, but I didn't really like the first one that much (the OC was unoriginal and a bit short), so I figured I'd pass.

I'm leaning towards BG, mainly because I like the characters and plot more. Also, being less linear than IWD was a plus. However, there was one thing in BG that really killed it for me. That is, the way magic played out, especially at higher levels in BG2 and ToB. Breach, Lower Resistance, and a couple others became essential just so you could actually cast the spells you actually wanted to cast. Spells who sole purpose was to let you cast other spells effectively was a real drag for me. Actually, I ended up never even finishing ToB because I grew sick of that. I had a ball with the Wild Mage, though, which is probably what I would play the protagonist as for this series. On top of that, I found the game to be a little power-gamer-y. Seriously, it was, like, raining magic weapons.

OTOH, while IWD had a system I liked much better, the storyline was just ok and the character depth was non-existent. Also, I'm not a big fan of being led by the nose through a game. Still, I liked that magic was a bit more of a rarity, and it was less power-gamer-y than BG2/ToB, even though you could custom create your own party.

For both games, it's been so long that I don't remember much about either, so I get to rediscover everything all over again (which is probably another point for BG). But still, I really hated wasting memorization slots and turns casting spells like Breach.

Maybe some of you can help sell me in one direction or the other. I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

If you don't like linear games then I doubt if you'll want to play right through IWD. I've started it several times, but never finished it for that reason. I can understand your concerns about the magic system, but if you find that a pain why not play a character that doesn't use magic? A wizard slayer might suit you, or a monk - both of whom are geared specifically to deal with enemy magic users.

Well I don't think I would just give up and quit video games especially if you like them. I think the BG, NWN, and IWD series are probably the pinnacle of rpgs. I don't know if a game like or better than those will ever be released. IWD is more linear for sure but it definitely has a charm all on its own. I really enjoy IWD alot. Magic is powerful but not to the same extent as found in BG2 and ToB. I think many of the magic items in IWD are quite interesting and flavorful. The game is more hack and slash I guess though I very much enjoyed the story. At any rate I would probably just play through IWD and its expansions and/or play through BG1. Both are excellent and magic isn't as ridiculous yet in BG1.

Out of the two I would pick Baldur's Gate. I've recently tried playing through Icewind Dale for a second time after many years, but the blandness of the story and the quests put me off after a couple of hours of playing the game.

Still I agree with Barchuk, giving up gaming for good seems like an extreme step to take. There are plenty of good games out there and they don't really require hours of dedication each day. You can assign and pace your free time as you like.

On a related note, if you enjoyed playing IWD and BG, I would recommend Planescape: Torment and Fallout 1 and 2 if you haven't already played them. And if you have, I still recommend them.

IMO, Planescape Torment is probably the best RPG I've every played, with FO1 and 2 coming in a close second. Actually, I had intended to make my "last game" FO:NV, but it was so disappointing, I didn't want to end on that note.

Giving up video games isn't as extreme as it sounds. Once in a while, when I have some free time, I expect I'll goof off on Kong. However, I'm currently spreading myself thin with too many interests, so something has to go. Video games are the least productive of all my interests, and I really don't like anything new. So, it's either give up something else I like to just play the same games over and over again, or give up games.

I've decided to go with the BG series, and probably a wild mage. I can't do a monk, as that's not an option for BG1. I thought about a Wizard Slayer, but being that the protagonist was raised by a wizard, that would be odd. As for the pain-in-the-ass mages, I figure the only way to beat them is to outclass them with my own mage skills.

If you like the interface for BG2 then why not install Tutu or BGT, which allow BG1 to be played with the BG2 engine. Both work well and BGT lets you take a single character from creation all the way through to Ascension in ToB. Using the BG2 engine of course also means that the wider selection of character types is available, so there's no reason you can't use a monk in BG1.

I don't have Ascension, but you bring up a good point. Where can I download the BG2, along with any other cool add-ons? All the links at planetBG are dead, and GameBanshee isn't what it used to be. I got the ToSC, Bonus Merchants, and Ascension from GB, but I can't find the ToB patch.

Lots of mod info on this thread, some good descriptions of what several key mods offer.

I'm not sure if you mean you don't have ToB at all or you haven't got the latest patch.  If the former then why not buy the download version from GOG.com - that comes with everything ready patched.  If the latter you can get the patch at www.sorcerers.net/Games/BG2/index_misc.php.

Thanks, I did eventually find it at sorcerers.net. I'm surprised that place is still open after all these years. :)

I think the patches can still be found at strategy informer or gamefront (former filefront). And the good news is that GOG now also has both BG1 and BG2+their expansions. And that they come fully patched.
