Would this be for party or solo play?

for non-bloodmage you can check out my sig for the post-patch build.
i don't believe i've got around to listing my party setup; if you/anyone would find such a thing useful i could get around to finishing it off (after my exam on monday)

Personally, I have no desire to try the Blood mage specialty, and have found that a Force/ Spirit healer to be quite capable. However, I have not used the NM setting, so Immunities may alter some choices here.

Believe I went with these Attributes:

STR - no points; just items and spells.
DEX - 20
MGC - max
WILL - 30 at least; perhaps a few more.
CUN - 20
CON -20

The Primal tree is the only one I have completed; taking varied selections in others to fill desired spell slots. The Cold spells from Elemental, Elemental Weapons and Crushing Prison from Arcane, Healing and Heroic Aura from Creation; skipping Spirit and Entropy in my sessions. I only chose a couple of selections from Force, and a few from SH to complete the design.

Note: Being able to respec with potions was quite helpful in streamlining choices along the way. Others may be more able to help with min/max suggestions.

While not having used Spirit, Entropy, and Force magic much at all does not diminish these as viable choices; going to try the Force and Spirit trees more on my next Mage. And there seem to be several build linked to many sigs that offer recommendations on specifics including items, tactics, etc. The variety offered in building a Mage makes this my favorite class in DA2.

Enjoy!

That fast rune of fortune guide involves going into areas I absolutely can't handle on nightmare and, so far, hard difficulties at lvl 6.

Bone pit and the Qunari mines, you can just do 1 or 2 fights, grab the resource and leave.

Cant deal with the first fight in the bone pit, with a dragon and a bunch of fire immune dragonlings. Its retarded what a difference there is between the hard and nightmare mode. I would be fine with the hard mode if it included splash damage.  That's with 2  lvl 7 mages with cones of cold.

Do you have dlc/money?
Apostates courage and staff of primal order will help quite a lot against dragons (cold weaknesses). Otherwise just using generic cold staves and spells should be fine- the only thingw you can't do is drop firestorms on them or use firestaves.

I'm fine with dragons having fire immunities (and cold weaknesses). That makes sense- wait till you hit random immunities amongst the Kirkwall thugs etc. That's annoying.

No dlcs. I got DA 2 for s&g for 13 bucks from direct to drive. The only reason I own it now. This game is laughable after having just finished Witcher 2.

Believe there are mods available to tailor what some want between Hard and NM settings.

You know what? I hate how people always compare DA2 to The Witcher 2. If you really dislike DA2 why play it? Then we won't have to help you not enjoy yourself. I mean, seriously...

Sorry if that sounds harsh, but I haven't seen Witcher posts in a while and that one brought up bad memories.

Anyway, if you don't have dlc you can still buy the staff of primal order once you have ~9 gold. I can't remember when the Docks become available though. In any case, you should have come across some generic cold staves? You'll probably want to find better swords etc for your other party members- their starting weapons are pretty lame. But even with generic items a party specced for dps should be fine for that fight.

I suppose you can't respec since you don't have the Black Emporium? Because if you and anders simply use (dual) haste most fights will be ridiculously easy. I suppose you could always just go hunt down the kirkwall at night mobs and level up towards getting heroic aura and haste.

If you still can't do it maybe nightmare isn't for you. Just switch to hard until you get more accustomed to mage combat.

Are you sure its a good idea to bash DA2 after asking for help because you are not good enough to handle the simplest encounter? Maybe if you learned to play the game you would enjoy it more.

You can always put on casual to get the Rune of Fortune, then get back to hard.

I looked at a trailer for the Witcher 2 and it looked like a steaming pile of **** lol. Combat in this game is way fun. That encounter is easily beatable with a solo mage, let alone one with a party.

DA 2 is a sufficient diversion.... for the 13 dollars I paid for it. If I had paid 60 dollars for it, as EA would have preferred me to, I would be pretty angry, not amused. The times of release day purchases of bioware games are long in the past.. So don't get your epeens all in a twist.

And beating the first fight in the bone pit with a solo lvl 6-7 wizard on nightmare playing a basic no mods no dlcs game? Don't think so.

I appreciate the help but I have come to the conclusion that I simply don't care about min maxing my characters in a manner favored by many here. A nightmare mod seems to have done the trick

Incidentally, Witcher 2 IS a better game in most if not all respects. No party combat but it actually has a story, and a really good one! And it looks 10 times better than this. Just think, no anime' elves with oversized swords. Good to great voice acting, characters you give a damn about, good dialogue, the list of the things DA 2 doesn't have unlike W2 goes on. And no wave combat. What the hell were they thinking?  Seriously, this game seems aimed at 13-15 year olds.  I am not sorry I bought DA 2, but only because I paid peanuts for it.

Difference for me is that I have no interest in TW series, let alone go to their boards and ask for help....

Wait?! Do they have boards now?

I could beat it naked without using any skills, although it would take awhile. 100% of the damage is avoidable. Edit: actually I would need a staff since the default element without a weapon on is Fire lol.

I ought to try it. It's just the combat looked terribly slow. The lack of party combat doesn't phase me since I haven't played with a party in DA2 in months lol. All that other good stuff would be welcome for a new game.
