First of all, yes, I know that DA and FO3 are two entirely different types of games and this is an unrealistic comparison based upon that.   Shaddap and let me do it anyways.  The dogmeat mentioned in this post is the Fallot 3 version of the animal.

Personality

Dog:  Dog is a happy, loyal companion who interacts with your party more than some of the human NPCs do.  Even though he can't speak, his happy barks, menacing growls and playful antics are sure to add enjoyment to your camp.

Dogmeat:  Dogmeat is happy, loyal companion which is apparently visable only to the player.  He has about as much personality as an unusually friendly brick.

Edge - Dog

Combat Utility:

Dog:  A terrifying warhound capable of tearing through enemies quicker than a starving elf through a bowl of gruel, Dog is an extremely useful ally particularily skilled at taking out enemy casters.

Dogmeat:  When Dogmeat is not busy giving away your stealth position he is usually jumping in front of your bullets or charging behomoths on his own.  Dogmeat in combat is about as useful as a pile of rocks to a drowning man.

Edge - Dog.

Out of Combat Utility:

Dog:  Dog can bring you a plethora of useful items, uniqe gifts and just plain funny junk.

Dogmeat:  Dogmeat can bring you ammo or drugs.  Useful things, but stale after a short time.

Edge - Dog

Appearance:

Dog:  Dog looks scary as hell.  Large, slavering jaws set in a massive head over a hugely muscled torso.  he can also look quite adorabe with his inquisitive expressions and furiously wagging tiny tail.

Dogmeat: Dogmeat looks like a half-starved, half-coyote mutt and runs like someone put pins in al his joints.  Only his stealthy stalk animation reminds m of a real dog.

Edge - Dog

I agree with the first three points. I am going to call Dogmeat as the winner in a look face-off however.

And; "omfg n00b, fo 3 arn't dao".

Societies function because of rules. Without rules, society crumbles into anarchy. This is why I get so upset when I see those "What did you name your dog?" threads. As everyone knows, it is a clear-cut rule that every dog in a videogame must be named Dogmeat.

Ergo, your points are irrelevant: they are one and the same.

Dogmeat didn't appear in only Fallout 3. Dogmeat was present throughout the Fallout series, and is thus a more experienced and well-known figure.

I vote Dogmeat the winner.

Fallout 3's Dogmeat was a mangy mutt. The original from Fallout 1, was an Archangel of Destruction.

As stated by bethesda, the name dogmeat in falout 3 was homag to the original dogmeat but t is not the same character.   The stories take place on opposite coasts.

I vote your point the loser

Dogmeat in Fallout 3 is an impostor, or an immortal.

Edge: ???

Again, your argument is based off a false premise.

There is no pet dog in a video game beyond Dogmeat.  Ergo, there is only one Dogmeat.

You know...I just realized that I never found Dogmeat in FO2. =/

He was the hardest thing to keep alive in FO1.

Oh and vote is for Dog hands down. He has the best dog grin ever.

Dogmeat was more of a liability than a companion or a pet. I told him to 'stay' and never came back.

After carefully reading your post and consulting the voices in my head, 4 out of 5 of my personalities agree with all of your points, while the fifth says "Seven giant boiling salad waters electrify the random monkey-face !"

So...yeah:huh:

Fallout 1 Dogmeat would win this. He was like god in a body of the dog.

Lol, one of my all-time video game memories was losing Dogmeat in the original Fallout. I reloaded time and again but couldn't keep my loyal companion alive. Heart Wrenching

I loved that ending.

Fallout 2 was great also. Shipped very buggy in order to get out before Christmas, which really hurt it, but eventually it was probably better than the original once everything was smoothed out.

Fallout 3? Eh, I like the non-linear gameplay, but like Oblivion, level scaling and a lack of direction hurt it. Plus, that ending was so easy and anti-climatic. I don't think level scaling and non-linear worlds work. The old Baldur's Gates and Might and Magics did it right. Get to a part of the world that is too hard? Try somewhere else, or go level up and bit more before going there.

As for Dogmeat in Fallout 3? Yea, he was a housepet for me also. A deathclaw could one shot him.

I'm afraid you forgot one thing...

Dogmeat : Has been your faithful companion when you played Fallout 1, twelve years ago (yes, twelve...).

OVER 9000 EDGE : DOGMEAT

Yeah, nostalgia is powerful.

Dog may be more useful in combat, but Dogmeat looks like a real dog instead of a generic fantasy creature. It is obviously modeled after the dog in Mad Max 2 which given the realistic environment of the game helps the player to develop a bond with the dog.

I vote for Dogmeat.

I loved Dogmeat :( That said, he is stupid as a brick. I blame that more on the game engine/mechanics than anything, though.

To much in Fallout 3 is modeled after Mad Max they should have just dropped the name and named it "Mad Max - Beyond the Thundervault. As far as who I vote for... well I did find Dogmeat useful for his ability to get items, but he was useless as a companion. I'm going to have to go with Dog, he reminds me of a scaled up version of my pitbull. Also Dog has more character development then Dogmeat.

I named my Marbari Hound Dogmeat. After logging over 200 hours in Fallout 3, it was the first name that came to my mind...

Dogmeat of Fallout 1 and Goris of Fallout 2 are my all time favorite video game companions, but if you've only known Dogmeat from Fallout 3 I can see why you'd prefer Dog.

As much as I loved the original Dogmeat from Fallout 1 and his reappearance in Fallout 2, the Fallout 3 introduction kinda felt like it was without a soul and I have to admit that Dogmeat has kinda become stale to me.

Furthermore, Dog is not named Dogmeat. His name is Rabbit.

I named him Horatio, and will hereby categorically declare that Horatio is better than Dogmeat in every conceivable fashion - up to and including the nostalgia factor.

12 years of retro gaming throwback has nothing on 400 years of historical literature.

The Fallout 3 Dogmeat was based on Mad Max's dog in the second movie. That's one point you have overlooked.

There are similarities as you can use them both to find stuff on the map.

I'm an old Fallout fan so I naturally named my dog Dogmeat. I like them both, I find that the dog concept and appearance in Dragon Age fits very well in the setting.

Dog was with me from beginning to end. He was a loyal companion, a true warrior and the bane of every mage that found themselves on the wrong side of the Wardens. He even prevented total loss on a number of occasions by being the last one standing when the rest of us didn't fare so well. All he ever asked for in return was some belly scratches and a bone once in a while.

Dogmeat stayed at my house to guard my bobblehead collection.

Dog wins.
