The Fallout 3 Dogmeat was based on Mad Max's dog in the second movie. That's one point you have overlooked.

The Fallout 1 Dogmeat too, you know :P

I'm an old Fallout fan so I naturally named my dog Dogmeat.

You're not alone :D

I hate both dogs... cause their dogs and deserve to be in my belly as opposed to a game.

That said, Dogmeat wins cause the SOB is so damn deadly. Dudes able to take on a horde of robots, dudes with shotguns, and giant mutant lobsters... and somehow live... albiet when he doesn't jump in front of one of my grenades.

As opposed to Dog aka Ribbit who isn't that damn good at his job and often ends up unconscious.

I named my warhound Dogmeat...

So that settles the debate. Dogmeat wins, (but which one?)

Combat Utility:

Dog:  A terrifying warhound capable of tearing through enemies quicker than a starving elf through a bowl of gruel, Dog is an extremely useful ally particularily skilled at taking out enemy casters.

Dogmeat:  When Dogmeat is not busy giving away your stealth position he is usually jumping in front of your bullets or charging behomoths on his own.  Dogmeat in combat is about as useful as a pile of rocks to a drowning man.

Edge - Dog.

umm-

dogmeat post broken steel dlc will obliterate dog, your maxed out party, the brood mother, the archdemon, the geth, the reapers, the circle of magi and cujo without breaking a sweat.

dogmeat post broken steel shrugs off MIRVs.

Dogmeat is the ONLY true gaming dog, ever. He was the original. All other game dogs are but distorted reflections of his nostalgic awesomeness. That said, I don't see any reason why some other dog can't be more powerful than Dogmeat. But no other video game dog can ever be *better* than Dogmeat.

In years to come, we will discriminate between the ranks of n00bs and h3r0s by the level of their appreciation and devotion to Dogmeat.

Dogmeat is a healthy mixed-breed that found that good laser gun for me when it fell into the world geometry.

Dog is a purebred, likely to develop crippling hip dysplasia, and has done nothing but annoy me in camp.

Dogmeat in Fallout 3 spent most of the game hanging out in front of Vault 101 or at my shack in Megaton because i was tired of him running off and seconds later receiving "Dogmeat has died."

Dog on the other hand munches on Mages, has funny dialogue option, marks his territory, and he will solve your rat problem.

Whats all this Dogmeat is the only gaming Dog evAr! Thats like saying every single Hero character in videogames is ripping off Duke Nukem, and he is the only hero, all hail the king!

There is no comparison available between them. Dog is a companion, with feeling, involved in quest, etc, he is just like morrigan or alistair. A person. Dogmeat is like the other companion in FO3, a meat shield for you. No quest, no romance, and few, very few dialog. The FO3 world is designed to be a lonely world, and your toon is a lonely boy/girl. In DA, he is a leader, and depending on origin, he can even be born as a ruler.

So, for me there is no comparison possible.

Sloth comes through with another winner.  But can we get a firm ruling on which of the many Dogmeats is the one being challeneged?  It's like, Steven Seagal vs just "Steve".

FO1 Dogmeat gets my vote

First two points are completely valid. There are times in fallout though where getting some ammo and meds can help you survive the next battle. The mabri brings you very few things of actual use so dogmeat wins round 3 narrowly. Point 4 is ridiculous. The warhound looks stupid in my opinion and dogmeat wins hands down.

I did also name dog Dogmeat as soon as given the chance.

Well, Dog has more character depth than the whole FO3 cast...minus the 'President'.

I agree with the OP in everything except this:

Sloth Of Doom wrote...

Out of Combat Utility:

Dog:  Dog can bring you a plethora of useful items, uniqe gifts and just plain funny junk.

Dogmeat:  Dogmeat can bring you ammo or drugs.  Useful things, but stale after a short time.

Edge - Dog

Dogmeat can fetch equipment from inside locked containers.
Seriously, one of the unique sniper rifles has a difficult lock (75?), and if you opened it there was only a 50% chance it spawns for you. If you tell Dogmeat to fetch... he has a 100% success rate in getting it for you, through a locker you can't pick. Awesome.

His love of jumping in front of the barrel of my rocket launcher when I press the trigger makes turning him indestructable necessary, though, as it keeps him intact. The same can't be said about my face when he does that.

As stated in the preamble this is the FO3 version of Dogmeat, since more peope ae familiar with him than the real dogmeat we older gamers remember.   Unfortunately comparing Dog to FO1 dogmeat would be like comparing Dicaprio to Clark Gable....sure peope right recognize Gable's name but a good chunk of them have no idea about what he was like. ^_^

Hmm... in FO3, I had Dogmeat for about 20-30 minutes, then he ran off and I never saw him again the entire game.  Kind of disappointed me, seeing as how fondly I remembered Dogmeat from the earlier (better) Fallouts...

So Dog wins.

As to the Fable 2 Dog?  Meh, that thing just kept getting injured and then just kept whining at me.  I wished the Fable Dog would have run away, but alas, it never did...

that wouldn't be fair though, because I think the entire fable series can die in a fire.  I happen to like FO3

Lost a perfectly good gulp of soda onto my keyboard with this last line.

Never got much use out of FO3's Dogmeat, so I vote Dog.
