How am I insulting soldiers?  I was merely stating the truth.  Special forces soldiers in the U.S military are all male, and have much higher physical standards than regular troops.

You bringing up the female soldiers you know in real life in an effort to legitamize the depiction of FemShep (who is supposed to be Special Forces) is thus nonsensical..

Your point becomes nonsensical since you are characterising Special Forces off of males in a futuristic society in which females can be part of Special Forces.  Do you understand this?  You're saying that those women aren't cut out for the Special Forces because Special Forces are only male.  If Special Forces allowed females, the women I know could therefore be elligible.

Good on you serving in the military.  Nevertheless, Sheploo isn't the only description of a soldier.

The concept art shep is not going to look exactly like the default shepard.

I know that.  But still, look how long FemShep fans have been waiting for some real marketable material for FemShep, and this.....this.......this is how they are rewarded?

If I were a FemShep fan, I'd be offended..

I’m a big femshep fan, even started a website, but I’m not offended.  I’m not a fan of the poster.  The face just looks too “animeish” to me.  Everything else, the pose, the expression, the colors, the style, great!  But this is just one artist’s interpretation of the new femShep.  The wallpaper and especially the t-shirt art look great!  I expect she’ll look a little older and more seasoned in the trailer and the game.  Personally, of all the femShep designs, I like the one on the t-shirt the best.  Oh well. She's not my femShep.  She's just here to represent.

See this thread is still progressing nicely.  Started with people still wishing blonde shep won. Then it went to simply dont like the hair colour, then the art doesnt look right, then she looks too young.  Now we just hit rock bottom with women arnt in the Special Forces today so shouldnt be in the future...

Honestly each time I come back I facepalm just a little harder.

Sorry to say that but Sheploo is mind blowingly boring, he looks like a goalkeeper known around here and is constantly made fun of. But that's irrelevant, my point is that he's just another generic 30-something black-haired caucasian male you can find in 95% of computer games. It's as tired and cliché as a character can possibly get.

Well, the primary market for Mass Effect (and most other action oriented games) are 20 to 35 year old caucasian males, so........

I'm in that demographic and still am bored to death with over-saturation of "you can play yourself in that game!" approach, the companies are over-estimating the number of customers who want a 'bro' of themselves in the game. I guess the only time I was intrigued about playing a replica of myself was in Vegas 2 as it allowed face implanting on the model. All these other attempts at invoking empathy has an opposite reaction on me.

Mind you, Adam Jensen from Deus Ex: Human Revolution is also from the demographic but he looks interesting, implants aside. He doesn't have that "some random guy that I can see across the street" feeling of Sheploo.

My only difficulty with the game sometimes is that the voice doesn't fit other faces.  I tried to make a more "nerdy" looking character (not after me, just nerdy looking) and it was difficult with the voice of Mark Veer to fit a "geekier" tech-savvy character.  And Sheploo...I just can't see as a techie.

most of my femsheps are red heads so im actually lookin forward to using the default Ginger. not that it matters of course, im finishing a blond femshep run right now and i havent noticed anyone treating shepard like anything but a total bada**

the only shepards i wont finish a run have bad animations: glitchy eyelids and eyes too close / far apart are impossible to deal with for 20+ hrs
[edit]
sheploos voice actually works pretty well w/ Barack Obamas face code. meer doesnt sound anything like the president but im actually considering finishing the playthru just to see/hear him tell TIMmy to go play in traffic

Time has passed by. People aren´t interested anymore. This "new" reboot-thing is just another lame and pathetic milking attempt by Eidos. And Crystal Dynamics is probably seriously thinking that people care?
I hope Mass Effect doesn´t turn into another big brandname to be milked to death.

And Batman is still Bruce Wayne. Batman. Bruce Wayne.

Batman: Terry McGinnis ;)

That said, I don't find the art to be as bad as some, but I definitely get the complaints about the too pretty/young/made-up face... Not that I really expected a scarred femShep, but something looking a bit more like a woman who has actually been through the ME 1 and 2 storylines...

How is it nonsensical?  You were the one that first used real life female soldiers as leverage to boost the depiction of FemShep, a fantastical character.

I merely replied that you can't use real life examples as a direct correlation to FemShep, because the concept of female Special Forces soldiers does not exist in real life.

Then tell me, what does a fantastical female Special Forces soldier look like?  You state that Sheploo makes sense, because he looks like he could be a soldier.  You say that the new default FemShep doesn't make sense because she doesn't look like a Special Forces soldier.  Then that tells me what?  You're sexist?  That FemShep shouldn't exist?  Your logic is flawed.

FemShep looks like soldiers I know.  If females were able to join the Special Forces, then the female officers I know could be eligible for Special Forces.  You're arguing that she doesn't look like a Special Forces soldier, but you have nothing to base that upon.  You argue that Sheploo does, because he has the "look".  I bet all Special Forces operatives don't look the same.  I bet they look very different.  You have as much logic in your argument as a V'tosh ka'tur.

For the record, my primary criticism of this depiction of FemShep had mostly to do with her age.  She looks far too young (and hip) to be what she is supposed to be.

You were the one that brought realism into this arguement by bringing up real life female soldiers.

But to answer your question, I have no idea what a futuristic female Special Forces soldier would look like.  I have no real life sources to draw upon, unlike with DudeShep..

From a general standpoint though, FemShep doesn't look like a warrior to me at all.  But thats no different than Marian Hawke, who looked more like a pampered princess than a warrior as well..

This is part of the dilemna developers face when creating female characters for video games like Mass Effect, Dragon Age 2 or Gears of War..  Our culture says that women should always be beautiful and attractive, yet being beautiful doesn't necessarily equate with being capable now does it?

Marian Hawke couldn't possibly swing that big greatsword with those scrawny arms of hers, yet give her the muscles to do it, and people will say that she isn't feminine enough and she's too butch.

Like I said, it's a dilemna.

Do you even know why women aren't allowed to join the Special Forces, or even any direct combat unit?  You're assuming it's merely due to sexism, but it's not.

Lets get a few things straight.  My primary criticism of this depiction of FemShep was that she was too young to be as experienced as she's supposed to be.

I never said she didn't look like a Special Forces soldier.  How could I, when there are no real life female Special Forces soldiers.

You're the one that first drew that comparison, when you likened those real life female soldiers that you know to FemShep.  I then retorted by saying that such a comparison was ridiculous, as none of those female soldiers are in the special forces.

To be fair Carfax you do raise a couple of points. However your just raising them in completely the wrong way and are tied up in your own preconceptions.

Yes people have said she has noodly arms at times. Ok its unrealistic and can be improved but thats not what this is all about. This isnt the modern world this is 2185. An ideal future where all humans are equal and can do the same things. Its not just femshep. Ashley is now in the spectres too! Females in ME have been portrayed to have just as much influence as everyone else, whether you accept it or not.

You really need to stop making such set in stone comparisons to the modern world when were playing a fantasy adventure in the future.

And what I've been telling you is I know women in the military, or for that matter, out of the military, that look younger than their age.  She doesn't look far too young to me, because I know women that look younger than what they are.  And as for "hip", that is an opinion more than anything.  She doesn't look at all hip to me.  She looks like a heavily armed ginger (though the hair does look a touch died) to me.  That doesn't make her hip.  Military women can be girly girls too.  If you want to complain that she doesn't have enough smudges on her face from being in the heat of battle, that's one thing.

All preconceptions have their origin in the real world, even those that led to the development of games like Mass Effect.

Such comparisons are inevitable, because Mass Effect draws heavily on the real world for inspiration/material.

It's not like the ME setting is completely fantastical now is it?

I agree on the age thing, the femShep there looks younger than me...

That said, as to the too beautiful implication...while beauty doesn't necessarily equate to capability, it doesn't necessarily equate to incapability, either. I've known hot women quite capable of kicking ass and taking names, both physically and mentally/emotionally. And I've known women who looked more "soldiery"/butch who'd have balked at the idea of actually hurting someone...so...*shrugs* While I would certainly prefer a femShep with a bit more of a weathered look and facial scars...At the end of the day I'm just glad she doesn't look like an empty headed bombshell with huge breasts hanging out of her uniform. ;)

Also, there is such a thing as white muscle, not everyone needs to build red muscle in order to be strong.

OK, let me ask you one question Jaffa.  Out of all those female soldiers you know, how many of them are in command positions that are equivalent to Shepard?

In the original Mass Effect, Shepard was a Lt.Commander, which is one step below a Captain, then got promoted to Captain when he took over the Normandy.  In the Army, Marines or Air Force, that would be equivalent to a Lt.Colonel.  A Captain would be a full bird Colonel.

Again, how many 20 (or even 30) somethings do you know that hold such rank?

They aren't.  But by your logic Sheploo shouldn't be fit for it either, since FemShep and Sheploo are the exact same age.  My argument is that a 29 year old female in the military, especially in a sci-fi setting, can look like she's in her early twenties.  You're arguing that she's too young now.  No matter how old or how young you make your Commander Shepard look, they are all 29 years old.
