So it's my first console playthrough of DA2. Got the Signature on the low for being a loyal Amazoner. Anyways.

So here's Hawke walking down the Chantry steps with his brother after talking with Grand Cleric Elthina. Then she starts arguing with this bowman in some badass armor talking about murder. Cue the badass Human Noble theme from DA:O and I'm thinking okay this guy is going to be a badass. Then he does the iconic Robin Hood arrow through the parchment thing and now I'm like this guy is a badass.

Fast forward to Act II & III and I'm asking myself "What the hell happened to the badass? This guy is a ****." At least Varric and Isabela remained true to their intros. Anybody else think the same? I was disappointed by Sebastian. His intro is like false propaganda or something.

Sebastian's intro is basically a trailer, with everything that implies.

But he has cool, shiny armor. And a swanky belt buckle. -_-

How did shooting a piece of paper make you think he was a bad ass? (And if he was so bad ass, why did he hire someone else to take out Flint Company?)

Anyway, his family had just been murdered so he's angry when you first meet him and he's just forsaken his vows. If you've spent any time with him by act 3 you've either tried to help him reclaim his role as prince of Starkhaven by rivalling him or you've helped him become a brother in the Chantry again by increasing friendship. That's Sebastian. What did you want him to do?

I dunno. The whole arrow through the parchment thing is... couldn't he rob the nobles in Hightown and give their riches away in Darktown or something.  No, he's just a cry baby who wants direction. I rivaled him and spared Anders hopefully he becomes a sane and worthy antagonist for mage sympathizers. I was just disappointed that the best part of the character as a whole was his introduction.

He can't rob nobles because he wants to retake his vows but the Grand Cleric won't let him. He knows what direction he wants, but if you rival him you can change his mind about returning to the Chantry.

Either way, he kind of flip-flops on his desires until he's 100% rivaled/befriended.

It's an RPG. In RPG's I'm really used to people not being able to tie their own shoes until I teach them. So a NPC that orders me to do his revenge doesn't make me think, "Wow, you're weak and lame." I just see it as part of the experience (literally, it's all about XP).

As for Seb's intro. It's fantastic. He's arguing with the Grand Cleric. He's epic. He has the coolest armor in the game. He has a cool accent.

And then you find out he's just a wishy-washy guy who can't decide if he wants to be rich and control a City-State or be a weak lay brother of the church.

His intro was nice, but i barely ever used him past his companion quests. All threw Act 2 and 3 all i could think is, "He isn't Shale."

Sure her intro wasn't near as great on Sebastian's was, but she turned out to be 200 times more awesome than he could ever hope to be.

Really? I found Shale irritating. She had basically no character depth.

I was honestly surprised that Shale would support Caradin however when I took her into the deep roads when all she talks about is golem superiority to humans, elves, dwarves, and birds.

He needed a cool, unique ability, like... Taskmaster's legion arrow or something

I'll admit other than his personal quests I never liked Sebastian or used him, Mostly because I either played a rogue or Had Varric due the better role.

When it comes down to sparing Anders or killing him, I pick Anders and scoff at Sebastian's threats.

Maybe not character depth (since she doesn't have many memories to build on), but i enjoyed her sense of humor the most. Plus she is one of the best neutral third parties in the game (other than when it comes to birds, golems being better than creatures of flesh, or mages). Her having no memories or biased opinions on thing, she is a total outsider looking in, and she calls them just how she sees them.

All I know is that I bought Legacy and Exiled Prince, so I played Legacy, super mega fun, and then I wanted to use the Exiled Prince, so I start a new playthrough, my attempt at a near perfect character. So I made a Female Mage, cause, Sebastian is straight, and I wanted to romance my new found companion. Well.... I found myself going the rivalry path with Sebastian, I ended up romancing Anders, I liked Varric as a character and his personal talent tree seem much better then Sebastian, so I'm in Act 3 right now, I'm not romancing Sebastian, I'm not using him, and in the end I'm not gonna kill Anders, so he's gonna leave my party. So that's when I realized I need to do another Playthrough...

EDIT: And it's so hard to rival this guy when my character is Diplomatic, always stepping in to save people....

He must be pretty bad ass to have the head of the Maker's bride between his legs 24/7
I have to disagree with you, when I saw Sebastian pinning the notice to the board with an arrow I was like -.- just like I was during Zaeed's intro scene, the difference is that I came to realize Zaeed deserved that bad ass while Sebastian couldn't realize I was trying to troll him -.-.
Oh, and if he thinks a measly army can get past Hawke, he might have a word with the Qunari.

Yeah, Sebastion was a let down. Friendship him and he turns into a simpering ***** and his quest is paper thin and easily forgettable. He had great promise, but ended up being another pain in the ass you had to play nanny with.

It would be nice if he took notice of the fact that my Hawke has a clear dislike of the chantry and has actively partaken in illegal activities to disrupt Templar operations without any concern in regards to killing them. not to mention the fact that my Hawke romanced a heathen.

Gameplay-wise, I agree that Sebastian doesn't bring much to the table that other characters don't do better. However, for the story, he is good for showing another side to Elthina, a side that I respect, despite my disagreement with her handling of the mage/templar situation. He's also got some interesting party banters that allow more of an insight into the way that the Chantry thinks.

Sebastian is impulsive and does things on a whim, things he might regret or not because he's never actually put two thoughts into it. His intro is showing the first time he's being impulsive, which sets up the character which will debate retaking Starkhaven with priesthood for a few years.

And it would be nice if every single Templar in the Gallows took notice of me trotting in with Anders, but sometimes we don't get what we want.

I bought the Exiled Prince download because I wanted the extra insights that you get from it regarding the Chantry, Mage Freedom movement, etc, and it was driving me nuts that people on these Forums were clearly arguing from knowledge that I did not have.  Sebastian was an interesting character in himself and I have just completed a run through with a female mage Hawke romancing him and becoming a sister of the Chantry (how's that for irony!).  Some of the most interesting dialogue comes from his interaction with other companions not just for an insight into his character but also their's.  However, this does mean you have to use him or at least take him on a few strolls around the city in party.  Take him along with you when you do Merrill's final quest and he is at least gentle in his suggestions, unlike Anders who is quite vicious in his condemnation, bearing in mind how he justifies every other blood mage we encounter on the grounds they are desperate (one expects lack of sympathy from Fenris).  One of the most interesting was when Sebeastian is talking with Averline and states that Elthina is worried because Meredith is no longer taking her advice and it is Averline who says that we ought to back Meredith just because she is Knight Commander.  At least Sebastian is the only person who gets it after the bomb - why are we talking RoA, there is the person responsible.

I am now going through, without bothering about romance, to rival him and see how different he is.  My only real disappointment first run through is that when I say he should think about what is best for the people of Starkhaven, he says he thinks it doesn't make much different who the ruler is, when clearly from his own family history it makes a big difference.  Hopefully his story will be expanded later as I felt in some ways his character development was rushed and not explored properly.

Shale won me over when she threatened to squish Lady Isolde's head for... well, duh.  Still wouldn't want her near my birds though.

I liked having Sebastian in the mix, he showed a cast a lot of light on the chantry and Elthina and he had an awesome voice. Gameplay-wise I preffered him ever-so-slightly to Varric.

Perhaps I liked him a lot because I always took Fenris along with him and their banter was very interesting. I did not agree with all that Sebastian said or thought but hey, I didn't like blood magic either but still liked Merril.
