It's just a marketing tool to make the game seem "cool" and appeal to the kiddies.

You'll get over it eventually.

While I agree with the OP, you have to keep in mind that it's just marketing. You only see 'cool' and 'epic' stuff in trailers/screenshots to attract the CoD crowd. I wouldn't worry too much.

OMG!!!!111!!!! They are implementing a mechanic that should have been from the first ME in order to provide more options in combat rather than the chest high wall fest of the first two ME!!!!! IT IS THE END OF THE FRANCHISE AS WE KNOW IT (AND I FEEL FINE!!!!)

aaaaaaaaaaaactually

I personally asked about Melee in ME1 during ME1 pre-release. I was responded to by one of the devs flat out telling me that Melee in ME was to take a position of secondary importance because the gameplay was about the use of Biotics/Tech and gunplay......and that was intentional

And we saw how that turned out to be lol. A brilliant story hampered by its lacklustre shooty elements, which were for better or worse one of the core parts of the game.

So why are you complaining about the omni-blade? It is a much needed development on the combat of the first two games that most of us acknowledge as necessary. I thought a person like you would be happy by the extra options presented to you considering OPTIONS IN AND OUT OF COMBAT ARE THE STAPLES OF ROLE PLAYING!!!!

To clarify I never believed the ME games to be a classic RPG but an action-RPG with the sequence of labels intentional.

I do not mind the existence of the Omniblade

Ultimately the Omni Blade is just a stronger melee attack which can double as stealth kill. Conceptually it adds nothing, it's not even an extra option since melee was already in ME1 and 2. The Omni Blade only made it flashier and more effective in terms of damage. But if you  think about it the Adept, for instance, achieves the same effect by simply using a open palm biotic attack.

I dislike the fact it is in almost every "new" bit of info including every single trailer opener and most of the wallpaper and now even on T-shirt. (also I suspect this is the reason why no one ever bothered to showcase the adept melee attack in depth....and why the vanguard's melee attack has not yet been showcased)

Do you call what was ME2 and especially ME1 as melee? HAHAHAHA. The terrible contextual system and the elbow smash? Maybe in the 90's but not today with games like Deus Ex: Hell Returns in competition for the WRPG throne.

The adept is a biotic, he has no need for these newfangled devices B). He can rip you apart with his mind. The soldier though is nothing but a ordinary man with a gun. He needs a close combat weapon, which in most militaries is a blade. Therefore Omni-blade.

So what if the omniblade is in every trailer that has shepard? It is marketing 101. Attract people with new features.

If you are the fan you appear to be you would look beyond these marketing ploys to where the real juice is. Then again if people are perplexed by the appearance of a nice new addition in the arsenal then maybe you don't care about the core of Mass Effect but only in its image. I would rather complain about the possible lack of vehicles rather than a new weapon being in the forefront of a ACTION-RPG.

Just think of the Omni-Blade as a Katar, people. A holographic Katar. And Katars are awesome.

Yes I think the omni-blade is absolutely retarded but it's Bioware's constant shoving it down my throat like it's the greatest feature ever that's more annoying.

It's almost as bad as Bethesda with their stupid obession with their Dragon Shouts.

Bethesda. I do not give a **** about your stupid Dragon Shouts. STFU about it and tell me about the Dark Brotherhood or something.

Oh, shut up already. I haven't heard you two say a single positive thing for months.

I didn't realise that this post from a week ago was not positive...

Seriously guys! Do you have to plaster that stupid thing everywhere and shove it down our throats all the time. Especially when half the fans things it's friggin' stupid in the first place. The way you've been beating it I'm surprised it hasn't spurted forth some link of omni-goo from the tip.

Seriously... give it a rest. It wasn't that cool from the start, and it's just becoming more and more tragically uncool the more it gets waved around. It just smells of trying too hard to be "badass and awesumz!!1" to the point where it's just not. At all.

I'd have considered getting the new Femshep T-shirt if it didn't have her with that retarded thing on it. <_<

I'm just glad you worked some hatespeech into your predictable, pseudo-patrician prattle.  Stay classy, Terror_K, and then regret your posts in the morning.

eh marketing is a pet peev of mine and David Silverman is not helping at all. This Thread was mostly about the marketing and not about the feature per se. and in that respect I agree. I am miffed tho because I do feel like the Adept melee and the Vanguard Melee are not being touched upon because they are not omniblade based

The marketing is meant to attract the COD crowd? Your insight into the marketing of ME3 is amazing.<_<

It's funny people keep mentioning the COD crowd. I think it's funny because I think the Bioware crowd is equally bad.

it's not just here.

on pretty much any forum, when you want to bring across the point that X shooting (or shooting hybrid) gaming franchise is lowering its standards and mainstreaming itself, you say that "they are trying to bring in the COD crowd" or something along those lines

Its not that bad. Just imagine Miranda's posterior in place of the omni blades and I imagine you'll have no problem with the orange shivs of death.

I should know better than to post in here, but I'm in agreement with that.

Yes I'm not keen on the "awesome factor" especially when it is right up in my face (in several other areas of the game as well from what has been seen). However I can appreciate these things have a purpose, though I may not agree with it, and also that combat might be a little more enjoyable because of it. :)

Trust me, a lot of us are really, really close to it. I personally know legions of fans are pissed in the Bethesda's forum with some vowing the series is dead and they will only be watching cutscenes on YouTube to see how the story ends.

That says less about the omni-blade and more about the overreactive nature of 'fans' in general.

It says a lot more when other 'fans' are dismissive of others viewpoint and labels viewpoint different from there own as 'overreactive' because they like the deadly flashlight.  Further more given the abrupt departure from and lack of improvements in other aspects of gameplay outside of ground combat and graphics.  Just keep in mind  if enough of those 'overreactive' fans don't buy the game will that signal that mass Effect failed it's conversion to fps ?

yeah it's fps not tps:D

I do.. I mentioned the CoD/GoW crowd and you know why? Because I am the CoD/GoW crowd. All I used to play was CoD, GoW and Halo. And I would've NEVER tried ME2 had it not been for the shooting/explosions/rock music trailers I saw... because for someone like me who plays CoD/GoW just to shoot and talk trash... ME2s RPG elements just look complicated and boring, it's something you grow into after played the game once or twice but had I seen all these RPG elements trailers.. i wouldn't of given ME2 a try.

And ME2 has grown to be my favorite game.. 30 playthroughs and counting, and I now love the RPG stuff. Also, just to say.. I honestly think Mass Effect has made me a better person. I used to play CoD/GoW and talk trash, thats it. Now I just don't really play games all try-hard anymore.. I tend to have more fun playing games now. I don't take anything to seriously and I just have fun with it.

It is long passed time we fight against the Omni Blade menace. Ever since Martin Sheen's robot eye transplant we have been under the threat of its orangey glow, undermining our long and proud history of watching Asari-Hanar porn whilst wearing nothing but an oxygen mask and a catsuit in the vacuum of space.

Yes, because the omni-blade defines the whole game, and having it advertised will completely ruin the end experience. Because it's such a pivotal feature.
