I personally have doubts that Corypheus meant the city was never golden, but whether it ever was or not, the end result was essentially the same. They returned from the Black City corrupted by the taint. Presumably the taint was spread to others by accident or by purpose and the result was the creation of the first broodmothers. Genlocks and Hurlocks and so forth must have been created because of the magisters directly or indirectly spread their corruption.

Corypheus doesn't seem to be carrying the taint in exactly the same way as either a ghoul or a darkspawn. He and presumably any others like him seem to be corrupted in an entirely different fashion.

It would make sense that the Black City had always been corrupted though, it would offer at least a more plausible explanation for the corruption of such powerful beings as the Magisters than the Chantry's version at any rate rather than religious mumbo jumbo.

Both the Chantry and the Wardens also believe that the darkspawn are mindless vessels, husks without a soul.

(AWAKENING SPOILERS)

Yet the Architect managed to retain their humanity allowing them to think for themselves, while still pretty feral. From what he said, I assumed the darkspawn always had their minds, but they were completely controlled by the Old Gods' song. After the "treatment" they don't hear it anymore, and they're free to think, basically the inverse of what happens to the Wardens when the taint overcomes them. This leads me to believe that they all had a soul, whether it was trapped or not.
The whole issue makes the reasoning behind the Archdemon's Death Management™ (darkspawn--> resurrection, reincarnation, whatever it is; wardens--> annihilation of souls) sound rather fishy.

I wonder perhaps if the Architect isn't actually one of the originalTevinter Magisters though, he seems to be dressed in Tevinter Magister clothing and bears striking similarities to Corypheus, what with his original clothing having melded to his face.

Theory: the seven dragons have the taint to begin with, and Tevinter Magisters were tricked by Dumat and were corrupted, methods unknown.

Reason is that in Legacy Corypheus will mistake Anders for Dumat. The 'Dumat' line appears only if Anders is in party.

Corypheus always mentions Dumat. Anders is the only one with a special comment on the subject though. This also prompts Corypheus to have a couple extra lines about Dumat and the length of his slumber but neither of them are directly addressed to Anders.
