While I haven't seen anything definitive on how the 'hardening' for Alistair and Lelianna are handled most things I've read indicate that choosing options like "Everyone is out for themself." which doesn't exactly fit with the idea of my PC so I was wondering if anyone could clarify what exactly triggers this -- I'd very much be interested to see any other dialogue options that might work for it that might be more in line with what I want to do with my PC.

Anyone pull apart the dialogue or experiment and have something to report?

Alistair:
After his personal quest, visiting Goldanna, he talks to you once you leave the hut. Reply with "Everyone is out for themselves."

Leliana:
During her personal quest you can opt to let her kill Marjoleine, I do not think this is required but would undoubtedly help. Afterwards she'll talk to you in camp, basically confirm that she is indeed a killer and not so much a nice girl.

I don't think anything else works.

Leliana will appear in leather armor in the final pro-cosomethingIforgottheword room instead of chantry robes. They will have different epilogue stories. Hardening is required to have Alistair marry you and let Loghain live, as a Female Noble. Or something, can't say I have been itching to try it out.

And yes. A foursome.

Still not sure what hardening is. Can someone point me to a wiki post or a forum thread that explains this concept and how to go about it?

It affects the outcome of the Landsmeet most of all (Alistair). Personally hardening Leliana seems pointless to me, though I got her to romance me quicker that way.

Is there "softening" of a character?

I would like to be the "good influence" warden to turn my companions from evil to neutral, much like how you could show Viconia and Sarevok from Baldur's Gate the error of their ways.
